(From Blue’s Perspective)

I covered Dion’s eyes as Luc, Cyan and Doctor Dimitri checked the dismembered body of the maid in the bathroom. I was horrified, not because of how the body looked, but because there was a question- how the hell did it happen in our bathroom?

Dem stood beside me with a hard look on his face. He had seen it right after waking up an hour ago. When I came back, Luc, Cyan and Doctor Dimitri were already here.

"There was no magic used," Luc said. "She has been killed using a weapon only."

"A very sharp blade," Doctor Dimitri added.

It was exactly what Dem had said. He needed them to confirm it.

"I need to check her blood to see if any kind of potion was used," Cyan said. He had taken a vial of the maid’s blood.

"Isn’t the main question how she was killed here? More than why and how she was killed, I need to know why the place of her murder is in my bathroom," I said. "Doesn’t it mean the person who killed her can enter our room anytime and just… They might not be able to harm Dem or me, but our son…"

"Stay alert all the time and increase security. Create a barrier, Blue. A really strong one. And don’t let Dion out of your sight," Luc said.

"Yes…"

Just like Luc said, I created a much stronger barrier around all the entrances of our room. Dem and I decided to have Dion sleep with us rather than in his room.

"Do you suspect anyone?" I asked Dem. He had been awfully quiet the whole time.

"I don’t know. I only know that it’s no normal person," he said. "I can even sense when the shadow comes into my room or something. It never happened to me before. I always know. I can always sense it.

I can always hear the noise. Even when someone breathes far away from me."

He was frustrated, as he always was whenever he could not meet his own expectations. When he was shot by the arrow in the eye, he reacted the same way. He had been angry and frustrated as none other than himself.

"Who else did you forgive and let go out of that damn kindness of yours?"

"Dem, it was not Flint. Don’t start with him."

"Oh? Who knows if he shook hands with someone else now? Maybe your father, even."

"There is no point in using him, Dem. Azure would not do that. He has got more powerful dark mages. Flint is just a normal mage to him," I said.

"It’s not about powerful dark mages anymore, Blue. You killed a lot of dark mages during the war. He doesn’t care about quality, but quantity. A greater number can sometimes be more powerful together than a small number with great power can," he said.

"It’s not him."

"Who knows? And you won’t even tell me where you have sent him."

"I have sent him nowhere. I just told him to leave."

"Leave the capital, you mean."

"Yes."

"Why? Because your husband will not let him be?"

"Will you let him be if you knew where he is?"

"Hell no! Do I look like I am out of my damn mind? I did not do anything because he was your prisoner and you did not want me to do anything when it came to your prisoners. If you let him go, it means he is no longer ’yours’."

"He was never mine, Dem. I don’t consider people mine. They are people, not objects," I said. Except when it came to Dem, I was very strict about this thing. Only Dem was mine, just like I was his. That was it.

"Who else did you show forgiveness?"

"No one else. Don’t be like this, Dem. It’s not Flint."

"How are you so sure?"

"I just… know…"

"That’s not a great source of information, is it?"

I did not say anything and patted Dion’s back gently. He was sleeping between us because both Dem and I were insecure. I was pretty sure Dem was not going to sleep tonight. Even though I created another layer of shield around our bed, he still was worried. Well, I was worried as well. The gruesome thing that happened in our bathroom bothered me a lot.

It was weird how these things did not traumatize me anymore. I felt guilty that I got used to things like this.

’I even cut a person in pieces without batting an eye. Why the hell would I feel something? Feeling scared or sorry would be like a joke only now.’

"I wish I could be as carefree and innocent as you, honey," I said, gently caressing Dion’s cheek. He slept on his stomach, facing me. It was the cutest position a kid could sleep in. "Look at our son. It has been only six months since he has come to the world, but he already has to face all of these…"

"He is not just Dion. He is Prince Dion. He is the first prince of Querencia. And most importantly, he is the son of you, the daughter of the black lord. A peaceful life was never an option for him. You and I knew it before he was born."

"Yeah…"

"I feel guilty, but what’s the point of that? He will manage just fine. If his parents can, then he can too. We just have to protect him until he is ready to protect himself."

"Then what?"

"Then, we will leave. Maybe go somewhere far away."

"Really? That sounds so… Without our children…" Read new chapters at novelbuddy

"You will see, honey. We are not going to rule forever. Someday, it will be Dion or his sibling who will rule. Besides, this life never suited us properly."

We did it because we had to. The life of a Queen was not for me. Dem was a good ruler, maybe a little ruthless, but he did what he had to. What mattered the most was not who could rule good, or who was more powerful; it all came to our happiness and satisfaction. None of us were happy being rulers.

Dem sat up and took his blade on the bed from his side. He started polishing it with a napkin.

"Go to sleep," he said.

"I’m pretty sure no one can break the barrier."

"Except for Azure," he pointed out. "I hate exceptions."

I closed my eyes for two minutes. I was pretty sure I would not be able to sleep tonight. I sighed and sat up as well.

"What?"

I climbed onto his lap and placed my head on his shoulder.

"I met Evelyn today."

"Oh?"

"We took a walk before I went to the magic tower," I said. "She knows Mother is alive."

"… How?"

"She said Mother came to met her."

"She is lying. She is testing you."

"Why would she do that? Does she suspect me of something? Maybe she thinks I killed Mother or something?"

"I know Evelyn, at least more than I ever knew the former Queen," he said. "Trust me, she might not seem it, but she can be more delusional about a particular thing than anyone else. You know what she values the most?"

"Freedom?"

"No. Blood," he replied.

"Blood?"

"Yes. Relationship and blood. What does it mean?"

"Family…"

"Yes. She values the ones with her blood. It’s a matter of obsession for her. I read her mind enough to know so. Even though she doesn’t love Mother or Father, even though she never loved them, she valued their lives. She believes blood is more valuable than anything else."

"What’s Evelyn’s power then, Dem? I thought only you could control blood."

"Blue, I am fascinated by blood. It can be any blood. Werewolf blood, or animal blood, I am fascinated by it all. I like the color, the way it flows, even the way it smells is… not so bad," he said. "But it’s not the same for her. She values ’the lives of the people with her blood’.

In other words, she values family, real family. Not ’in laws’ or anything like that. Her power is ’heart’. Family is considered to be the heart of all relationships. And the heart is what keeps us alive. Yes, there are many things other than a heart, but a heart is more important than almost all of them."

"How does she…? I don’t understand. Can’t you do the same thing? When you control blood, can’t you stop the heart and things like that?"

"She can crash the heart directly within a second. It’s different," he said. "Every power is different. They can be related, but never same."

"As I was saying, she is saying it because she doesn’t want her mother to be dead. No matter how she acts, she still values her mother. At least, her mother’s life. She would not care if someone with her blood was being tortured. As long as the person was alive, she won’t care," he added. "Our family is messed up, Blue.

You will discover many things, many more strange things the more you spend time in this family."
