The Werewolf King's Bride-Chapter 530: Setting Boundaries
(From Blue’s Perspective)
"Support his head," Dem said to Evelyn, who was holding Dion for the very first time. She and her family had come back today after the war.
"I literally have a daughter who is seven," Evelyn rolled her eyes at his brother.
"He looks so much like His Highness," Merrick, her husband said. He did not talk much, kind of like the duke.
"He has two eyes, unlike Uncle who has just one now," Ava, their daughter said. She had her father’s brown hair even though her mother had shiny red hair. I heard red hair was a matter of very strong genes. Maybe, it did not work for everyone.
"That’s rude, Ava. You cannot talk that way," I said.
About her moral studies, it was me who told her off about such things. Her mother did not care and even if her father cared, it was very little. He almost always just followed his wife.
"Sorry, Aunt," Ava said. She, at least, listened to me.
"Not to me. Apologize to your uncle," I said.
"… Sorry, Uncle Dem," she said.
Dem remained quiet. I nudged him with my elbow. "Alright," Dem said.
What was I going to do with this family? It was just too weird. They did not know what to say and what to not say, what was rude, how to apologize, when to apologize, or how to respond to an apology or praise. All of them were like that. Was my son going to be like that too?
"Oh, Blue, how are you doing now? I have heard everything. Really, giving birth is so damn hard. How did you even walk right after that? And you… I can’t believe I have a dark mage sister-in-law," Evelyn said.
"So, Aunt is truly a dark mage?" Ava asked.
I was not sure whose question to answer first, or how to even respond. I had heard these questions a lot. But it was always frustrating and confusing to answer them. I was not sure what to say, or how to say it.
As if pitying me, Dem took the job to answer their questions and explaining the regular parts to them.
"I don’t know what to say, to be honest," Evelyn said.
"You don’t need to say anything. We have nothing to hear," Dem said.
"Shut up, Demetrius. You are as insolent as always," she snapped. She looked like she could just tear Dem’s head apart if she wanted to.
"And you are just as time-consuming as always. Why do you have to drink your tea that slowly?" Dem snapped back. Never mind, although he did not look feral, he could be just as aggressive.
"Don’t be like that, Dem. Evelyn has come after a long time," I said, taking his hand as I entwined our fingers.
"Oh, tell him, Blue. Even though she is a dark mage, have you seen her manners? She is a good person, unlike you," Evelyn said.
"All dark mages are not bad," Dem said. "What do you mean ’even though she is a dark mage’? How many dark mages have you even seen to say that?"
"We just hear what others say," Evelyn said. "They have a bad reputation."
"They do. But you should do better than just hear what others say," Dem said.
"I don’t just hear what others say. I know Blue. I know what kind of person she is. And she is the Queen of Querencia, a rather powerful one. I will accept her regardless of what she is," she said.
"Evelyn, I understand that you accept me as the Queen of Querencia. You have to," I said. "However, do you accept me as your sister-in-law?"
"… You are better than the woman who gave birth to me. I would always accept you," she said slowly. "I don’t care what you are. I believe what I see. And I have seen you enough."
’Not enough. Surely not enough.’
Ava snuggled closer to me. She always loved me. And I knew she would love me regardless of who I was, or what I was.
"Wow, he doesn’t cry even though he is in the arms of a stranger," Evelyn said as Dion peacefully remained in her arms, gazing at her with his black eyes.
"I think he still doesn’t realize he is not in his parents’ arms," I said.
"No, they do realize it from a small age. And werewolf children- they recognize their parents’ smell or the smell of the ones who take care of them. They feel safe with those people and get uncomfortable in others’ arms. But your son is truly calm. I am pretty sure he can differentiate all of your smells. But he just remains calm.
I have never seen such a calm child before."
"Don’t forget he is half human," Dem said.
"Blue might not be a human at all. Maybe she is just a werewolf dark mage," Evelyn said. "You can never know. Dark mages cannot shapeshift either."
"I am human," I said. "I know I am. My mother is human. There is no doubt about that. And my son is half human as well."
"This is my first time hearing about a human dark mage," she said.
"This is the first occurrence," Dem said. "No wonder you are hearing about it for the first time."
"How are you so sure it is the first time?" she asked.
"Don’t ask me how. You have no idea what we had to do to know these things," Dem said.
"… You were not there when Blue led the war. Why? What happened?" she asked.
"I was injured badly," Dem said. "I could not get up."
"He was not conscious," I said. "He was poisoned during the war. The arrow that… stabbed his eye had poison. It was a different type of poison, almost impossible to even know that it is there."
Evelyn had a lot of questions. She asked many, but I was sure she would have more to ask in the next few days. If someone needed proof that Dem and she were siblings, they just needed to see them arguing. It was enough proof.
She also provided some suggestions about how to take care of a newborn. I thought they were valid enough, but Dem would not listen to her unless Doctor Dimitri said she was right.
"Why did you even agree to her demand to meet you?" Dem asked annoyedly after we returned to our room. Dem and I needed to join a meeting, so we would just eat something and take a bath before that.
"Not demand, Dem. She requested," I said. "And she is your sister."
"So?"
"What do you mean ’so’? She hasn’t done anything wrong to us," I said. "Don’t be unreasonable."
"She is exhausting."
"She has questions," I said.
"Of course she does," he rolled his eyes.
"Did you just…? You know what? Don’t talk to me."
I got angry and just went to take a bath. He called my name, but I did not turn back to him.
He always acted that way. So, I did something wrong just because I let Evelyn meet us? She also wanted to see Dion. She was Dem’s sister. And besides, I quite liked her.
"He always does that. For everything, he blames me," I objected to Sapphire who followed me into the bathroom and sat by my tub.
"I did not blame you," Dem said from the bedroom.
"Then, he will act like it’s my fault. And he has to hate everything," I said, ignoring him. "Can’t he compromise at all? I compromise so much because of him. He can’t do the same?"
"… I tried to bear the whole thing without losing my sanity."
"And I always try to go through your weird complaints about literally the most normal things in life. Don’t you dare say it to me!"
"… Okay, I’m sorry."
"I will go shopping tomorrow. And you won’t follow me," I said. "That’s final, Dem. I won’t hear your complaints about this too. I am an adult and I know what I am doing. I need a break from everything."
"We can talk about it later, Blue," he said. He could not stay in the bedroom anymore and barged into the bathroom with our sleeping son in his arms.
"There is nothing to talk about. I am going and that’s final," I said dismissively.
"Not alone." Your next journey awaits at novelbuddy
"Oh, trust me, I can take down half the people in this kingdom singlehandedly and if I am in danger, Vigor will take down the other half. I have defeated my dear father once. Sure I can do it another once or twice," I said.
"You are not going alone."
"Oh, I am."
"Just no, Blue."

When I was not giving up, he tried another tactic.
"Take the duchess with you."
"No."
"What’s the problem, Blue? You are just not listening to me at all!"
"Dem, stop it, honestly. I can take care of myself. Only Perita will go with me. That’s it," I said. "I will also meet Abel on the way."
I had met Abel, Dem’s knight, only once after returning to the palace. He still needed continuous treatment and was now in his villa. I promised to visit him when I got time, but I could not visit him for quite a long time because of work pressure and other things.
"You are just being stubborn," he said.
"I don’t care if I’m being stubborn. I am going out only with Perita and that’s it."
"Even I can’t come?"
"No. Just stay at home."
I knew I was being stubborn, but I had the right to do so. If I wanted to go shopping, then I was going to go. If I wanted to go alone, then I would go alone. If I did not set boundaries, I would never have them, not even when I truly needed them.
