Kyle Kaodo was stunned—not only because his charm spell had failed for the second time but also because... this girl’s grip strength was shockingly powerful.

Instinctively, Kyle activated his blood magic to boost the strength in his arm, trying to twist his wrist free and overpower her in an arm-wrestling contest of sorts. With the aid of blood magic, he could usually elevate his strength to a level that would make any strongman look weak by comparison.

But to his amazement, he soon realized that even with blood magic, his strength... still seemed inferior to this seemingly delicate girl.

At the same moment, Veronica also noticed that her opponent’s strength was far beyond that of an average person. Her guard went up instantly, and she tightened her grip, attempting to twist his arm back, aiming to pin his wrist behind him.

Her experience dealing with ruthless gangsters and bandits had taught her never to hold back; these opponents often carried concealed weapons. When necessary, she didn’t hesitate to dislocate a shoulder or two.

Kyle immediately felt his wrist about to snap, and in desperation, he dissolved his right hand into mist, slipping out of Veronica’s iron grip.

Veronica felt her grasp suddenly empty, and watched as the man escaped her hold, putting some distance between them. His entire hand and forearm had transformed into a gray mist, which then drifted back into his sleeve, reforming into a solid arm.

Her mind reeled. A body that could dissolve into mist… a dark sorcerer? Or…

She took another look at the young man. His unnaturally pale skin, and the faint red gleam hidden beneath the shadow of his hat…

A high-ranking vampire! She finally understood his true identity.

During her days as a mounted police officer, she’d rarely encountered dark magic or supernatural beings. But since joining the Rose Prison, she had studied the unique traits of prisoners in the core cells, one of whom happened to be a vampire lord.

Could it be that this man… intended to take her hostage to stage a prison break?

It seemed that this vampire had tried to use his charm to lower her guard, but unfortunately for him, he’d come up against a pureblood werewolf.

The mental structure of werewolves, who is easily influenced by primal instincts, differs greatly from that of ordinary people. Attempting to exert mind control on a werewolf often only stirs their aggression.

At this moment, Kyle was anxiously inspecting his right hand. But the second he turned his gaze back, he saw Veronica opening her mouth to call for backup, which made him shudder in alarm.

“Wait! Stop! Don’t shout! I surrender!” Kyle quickly waved his hands and raised them in the air, a nervous smile plastered on his face. “It’s a misunderstanding! All just a misunderstanding!”

If word got out that he’d attacked a prison guard, he’d soon be surrounded by the local Inquisition. High-ranking vampires were powerful, but they also had many weaknesses. Today’s Inquisition had perfected methods for dealing with vampires. Once you were on their wanted list, imprisonment was only a matter of time.

Unlike his sister, who was stubbornly obsessed with the elusive notion of noble dignity, Kyle had a clear understanding of what it took for vampires to survive in this world.

“A misunderstanding? You tried to control me just now, didn’t you?” Veronica shot back sharply.

“No, no! I just wanted to get some information about your warden to see if he could help me later. Look, you’ve got magic-sealing wards in your prison. Even if I tried anything, wouldn’t it just be neutralized as soon as I walked in?” Kyle hurriedly explained, and showing his identification papers. “Yes, I’m a vampire, but I’m a law-abiding citizen! Here, look at my ID!”

Veronica frowned, snatching the ID and examining it. As a pureblood werewolf, she was familiar with these credentials and had to admit this vampire didn’t seem like the type to act out of line.

She looked Kyle over again, and he immediately returned her gaze with an awkward, sheepish grin.

“Kaodo… the family member you wanted to visit, wouldn’t happen to be named Ophelia, would she?” Veronica connected his surname to a certain inmate.

“Yes, yes, exactly.” Kyle nodded eagerly.

“Using abilities on others without consent is also illegal!” Veronica pressed the ID back against his face, scolding him sharply. “If you want a prison visit, follow the rules! If I catch you trying any tricks again, I’ll report you to the Inquisition!”

After finishing her reprimand, Veronica strode into the prison without looking back, leaving Kyle standing there in a daze.

Rejected again. This girl was clearly not an ordinary person either…

Kyle scratched his head and went back to squat in his original spot.

So, should he just wait a month to come back? Or maybe... try to catch the prison warden here?

As he was weighing his options, someone else walked out from a side door of the prison.

Kyle instinctively turned his head and saw a blonde girl approaching at a leisurely pace.

Hmm? Isn’t this… the same “Alice Liddell” who was just meeting directly with the warden?

Kyle’s spirits lifted immediately.

He remembered the guard at reception mentioning that she was an “important guest” of the warden. Could this girl actually be someone with close ties to the warden?

If he could get on her good side, it would certainly be more effective than trying his luck with an ordinary guard!

With this thought, Kyle instantly perked up, stood up, put on his most charming smile, and walked up to the girl. “Hello, beautiful lady…”

At the same time, he didn’t hesitate to once again activate his charm.

But the girl only glanced at him and, replied coldly, “Using such crude charm on me? Are Tired of living, vampire?”

Kyle was petrified on the spot, when he was instantly exposed.

“Weaklings should know their place. Move aside.” Abigail raised a hand, indicating for Kyle to step out of her way.

“Weakling? But…” Kyle composed himself, forcing a polite yet awkward smile. “I am a prince-level vampire, after all.”

“Apologies, I don’t mean to single you out,” Abigail responded impassively, “I’m talking about all vampires. Your progenitor, after all, was just a pitiful creature who sought the power over ‘death’ and failed. And as for you descendants… willing to accept such a curse just to pursue immortality—can anyone be more pathetic?”

She knew even the hidden truths of the vampire lineage!

Kyle’s eyes widened in shock. “Who exactly are you—”

“I told you to move,” Abigail said coldly, raising a hand and pointing at him.

Instantly, she cast a life spell—so expertly that she didn’t even need an incantation. She injected pure life energy directly into Kyle’s body. For the living, this power would have a healing effect, but for the undead, it was nothing short of a harmful magic.

Kyle felt a sharp pain stab through his chest, nearly sending him crashing to the ground.

He caught himself on a nearby streetlamp, struggling to steady himself. When he looked up, she was already gone.

In that moment, he gave up entirely on his earlier idea of waiting around to intercept the prison warden.

If even the guards and visitors here weren’t ordinary, then what kind of monstrous figure could the warden be?

Reflecting on his string of failures that day, Kyle was left utterly bewildered.

What's wrong with this prison?
