Chapter 30: Chapter 30: She Must Not Fall for Him

Seraphina Caldwell couldn’t help but mutter to herself.

The short but meaningful kiss repeatedly surfaced in her mind.

But she immediately convinced herself.

Maybe it was just psychological, after all, the environment kept changing, and she couldn’t just imagine things because of an accidental kiss.

As she was lost in thought, Wyatt Yardley suddenly looked down at her.

Seraphina’s heart skipped a beat, and she quickly turned her head away.

She swiftly shifted her gaze to the ground, staring at her toes.

This is bad...

Could he know what I’m thinking?

She tried to steady her breathing.

But the more she tried to suppress it, the more uncontrollably the scene replayed in her mind.

What foolish thoughts is she having!

This man is a notorious cruel villain.

Seraphina harshly scolded herself in her heart.

Who is Wyatt?

The legendary cold-blooded ruler of the Viperdile Clan.

He once slaughtered an entire rebellious tribe overnight, leaving no woman or child alive.

How could such a person be as calm and restrained as he appears on the surface?

Don’t be fooled by his honest appearance now; it’s only because of the mate mark keeping him in check.

Once the Contract is gone, she would surely suffer his wrath.

She clearly remembered what the elders had said.

The mate mark not only stabilized emotions but also suppressed the primal desires of the strong.

Once the Contract is broken or loses effect, those suppressed wild and brutal instincts would be fully unleashed.

And she, as the other half of the mark, could very well become the first sacrifice.

So she must not become dependent on him, and certainly not fall for him.

The space may be small, but the most important thing now is to find her father.

Her father had been missing for several days.

She needed to stay alert, focus on tracking down every clue.

As for this temporary Contract relationship.

It was merely a stopgap measure.

Wyatt caught sight of her panicked, evasive demeanor, and a slight smile emerged on his lips.

He wasn’t in a hurry to expose her disguise.

Instead, he found this clumsy avoidance somewhat endearing.

He adjusted her position again to make her more comfortable.

Speaking in a low voice, he said,

"Let’s take a rest over there."

His arm steadily supported her waist and back.

Seraphina wanted to struggle.

But she felt weak all over and, in the end, could only let him adjust her position.

After speaking, he pointed towards the depths of Veridia.

The forest ahead was dense, and a shiny little creek appeared every now and then.

A few huge rocks were lying on the bank, perfectly blocking the scorching sun.

It was obvious that this place had long been chosen as a resting spot.

Such a place was good for cooling down and keeping vigilant around for any disturbances.

His serpentine tail moved forward slowly, and Wyatt carefully avoided loose stones and roots along the way, fearing the person in his arms would be jostled.

Even though Seraphina was so light she almost had no weight, he never slacked off one bit.

Before long, he gently placed Seraphina on a flat rock.

Wyatt lightly held her arm, helping her land steadily.

As soon as her feet touched the ground, Seraphina let out a long sigh.

She reached out to rub her waist that had been sore from the ride, sneaking a glance at Wyatt’s still upright figure.

Though their time together wasn’t long,

She had to admit that his attitude towards tasks was impeccable.

When Gideon Larkin carried her before, he fully transformed into his beast form.

She was stuck on his broad back, unable to move her limbs freely and had to hold tightly onto the scales to avoid falling off.

By contrast, Wyatt at least retained his human upper body.

But the problem was, his serpent body was so large and solid.

Plus, the slight sway while moving was simply a slow torment for her.

Other beast husbands also followed along one by one.

The leading young man from the Grey Wolf Clan patted the dust off his body, grinning widely.

The Tiger Clan warrior nearby silently took out some dry rations and began munching, his eyes always vigilantly scanning the surroundings.

Though they belonged to different clans,

at this moment, they were gathered together because of a common mission, maintaining an appropriate distance and respect with one another.

Seraphina stared at the clear stream, actually craving to jump in for a bath.

She was travel-worn along the way, her back soaked with sweat, and her hair sticking uncomfortably to her neck.

But the memory of yesterday was still vivid.

A giant Viperdile suddenly attacked from the water, its gaping maw nearly swallowing her whole.

If not for Wyatt’s timely intervention, she might have already been a dead soul in the water.

The thought made her shiver, and she reluctantly withdrew her gaze.

Just as she hesitated, Wyatt suddenly leaned closer.

"Want to go in for a bath? I’ll go with you, how about it?"

Before she knew it, he had come up behind her.

He bent down, placing one hand on the rock beside her, forming a semicircle around her.

The warm breath brushing her ear made Seraphina’s breath catch.

Seraphina lifted her head, her gaze falling on Wyatt’s arm, finally fixing on the faintly glowing green Beast Ring on his wrist.

Logically, with him to protect her in the water, she shouldn’t face any danger.

But yesterday’s scene when the Great Viperdile suddenly erupted from the water...

She couldn’t help but shiver.

Even though Isaac Vaughn was right there, so close, his reaction was a fraction too slow.

That moment of hesitation was too unnatural.

The Merfolk Clan naturally has an affinity with water, and such a sluggish reaction shouldn’t happen.

That brief pause didn’t seem like evasion but rather deliberately making way.

Thinking this, Seraphina’s complexion slightly paled.

She couldn’t help but steal a glance towards the stream.

Isaac had already emerged and was quietly staying in the shallow area. 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

He looked truly relaxed, appearing completely unguarded.

But Seraphina always felt something was off.

That apparent "relaxation" seemed too deliberate.

Suddenly, her gaze froze on a lonely wooden bucket; her eyes lit up!

The water wasn’t safe, so why not clean herself on the shore?

She could use the bucket to scoop water up; it would be just as clean.

How had she not thought of this simple solution earlier?

She steadied herself and then turned towards Wyatt.

"I won’t go into the water; I’ll just use the bucket to wash."

Wyatt looked over, immediately understanding her concerns.

He walked over, bent down, and picked up the coarse wooden bucket.

He then proceeded to the stream, filling it with the crystal-clear water.

He walked back step by step under the shade of the tree, placing it firmly on the flat ground.

To Seraphina’s surprise, he also took out a soft piece of Beast Skin from his pocket.

He carefully placed it around the rim of the bucket to ensure she wouldn’t scratch her skin.

Watching his series of silent actions, warmth gently surged in Seraphina’s heart.

"Thanks a lot."

"Shall we do it like this, fetching water five times for one drop of blood, okay?"

She originally thought he’d be happy.

But unexpectedly, Wyatt’s gaze darkened slightly.

What’s with this reaction?

Could it be he thought it was too much?

Seraphina’s heart sank a little.

"Kaelan Hawthorne makes five meals for one drop of blood. Drawing water is a lot easier than cooking; it’s not over the top at all... This is already a bargain!"

Before she finished speaking, Wyatt had already turned away, heading towards the thick shadow of the trees not far away.

His figure stood silent as a rock, the silence enough to unsettle.

Seraphina’s words caught in her throat.

So he really thought the number was too high?

Should she reduce it to four?
