Chapter 65: Chapter 65: Who Would Do Such a Thing

Who would do something like that?

A normal person would have already kept their distance, so how could anyone possibly stay on the ground looking up from below!

This action is so bizarre it sends shivers down one’s spine.

Selene Kane stood up unhurriedly, brushed the dust off her hands, and shrugged.

She bent down casually and picked up the crumpled envelope from the ground.

The edges of the envelope were already a bit worn.

The writing on it was crooked, and the ink had bled slightly.

She couldn’t fully recognize those complex characters, but by piecing together fragmented phrases and drawings, she managed to roughly understand the meaning.

It said someone was coming to visit their home.

Presumably looking for Henry Sheridan.

After all, the letter was sent to their residence.

And besides Henry Sheridan, there really were no other members of the Butterfly Clan in the house.

"Can I take a look at this?"

Selene Kane held up the envelope, her tone calm.

Joni looked reluctant, her lips tightly pressed together, fingers clenching the hem of her skirt, her gaze flickering.

Even though she was an A-level female, in front of Selene Kane, she had no confidence.

Selene Kane was an S-level, her combat power overwhelming her by more than a level.

If the other party really wanted to make a move, she wouldn’t even have a chance to resist, let alone escape.

She gritted her teeth and finally compromised, squeezing out two muffled words: "Okay...you can look."

Selene Kane took the potion, lowered her head, and scrutinized it.

It was just a very rudimentary test tube, with the glass reflecting a dull luster.

The top was hastily sealed with a plastic cap, without even basic leak-proof design.

The entire packaging looked extremely ordinary, or even a bit shabby.

It was no different from the cheap potions sold at street vendors.

She unscrewed the cap decisively, her movements swift and sharp.

In an instant, a pungent mixed smell surged out, piercing into her nostrils.

First was the cloying floral scent, followed by the stench of damp earth.

Finally, there was a hint of overly fermented sour rot, like fruit left to rot in a bottle for ages before being opened.

Her face scrunched up instantly, her brow furrowing, the corners of her mouth turning down, her eyes narrowing.

"You fought over this?"

Riley closed her eyes, her long eyelashes quivering slightly, a faint blush rising on her cheeks.

"Yes, it’s this scent."

She murmured softly, as if speaking in a dream.

"This aroma is so pure... I feel as though my nearly exhausted spiritual power is being awakened, like a dried riverbed suddenly receiving a spring of water."

Selene Kane listened, frowning, feeling she was exaggerating too much.

This scent wouldn’t even meet the standards of cheap industrial perfumes, let alone high-end ones.

It smelled as if someone had crushed wilted petals, sealed them in a bottle for days to let them rot.

Using it directly as a potion without even filtering, it’s downright nauseating.

She decisively twisted the cap back on, locking in that strange smell with a click.

Riley seemed like her soul had been extracted, opening her eyes with a vacant look.

"Miss Kane," Riley clasped her hands together, her tone bordering on pleading, "I really want this bottle of potion, could you please help me speak with this lady? I can pay extra, double, triple even."

Selene Kane glanced at her, silent for two seconds.

Then she nodded, turned around, and handed the potion directly to Riley.

"Take it."

Joni pounced like mad, stumbling, her arm swinging wildly, nearly knocking over the chair beside her.

"No! That’s mine!"

She gave Selene Kane a hard shove on the shoulder, the force strong enough to send Selene Kane a step back.

"You wretched female! It was mine to begin with, what right do you have to give it away! What qualifies you to make decisions for me!"

Selene Kane steadied herself, yet did not grow angry; instead, her face showed a faint smile.

She looked up at Riley.

"Leave this to me; you should go now."

Riley gripped the bottle tightly, her fingertips turning slightly white. 𝘧𝓇𝑒𝑒𝑤ℯ𝑏𝓃𝘰𝑣ℯ𝘭.𝘤ℴ𝘮

She gritted her teeth, as if making a certain decision, lifted her hand decisively, and removed the pearl necklace from her neck, the jade bracelet from her wrist, the diamond earrings from her earlobes, one by one.

"Thank you so much, truly."

Her voice trembled slightly, with a hint of sincerity, a hint of panic.

"These... consider them an apology for my earlier rudeness. I was too presumptuous, please do take them. Next time we meet, I will visit in person to express my gratitude formally."

With that, she left without looking back, almost like fleeing.

Her skirt swept the carpet, rustling softly.

Joni stood where she was, her cheeks flushed with anger, her fists clenched tightly.

She stared hard at Selene Kane’s back, her eyes burning with rage.

"Selene Kane, are you out of your mind? Giving my stuff away?"

She turned around sharply, shouting at Selene Kane.

"That’s my necklace! An heirloom from my grandmother! What right do you have to give it away in my place?"

As she spoke, she grew more agitated, her eyes turning red, her voice filled with grievance.

"How could my cousin marry a female like you? Selfish, hypocritical, pretending! You’re not worthy! Not worthy to stand here, not worthy to be his wife!"

Selene Kane didn’t immediately respond.

She simply looked at Joni, her gaze calm to the point of indifference.

Then she suddenly stepped forward, grasping Joni’s delicate wrist with one hand.

Joni screamed in surprise, not having time to react before she saw Selene Kane bend down.

Using her other hand, she carefully dusted off the skirt, her movements gentle as if tending to a child who didn’t understand.

Finishing, Selene Kane straightened up.

"If I hadn’t come, wouldn’t you have had to give it to her in the end?"

Her gaze was cool, "You can’t possibly beat her; Riley’s strength is above yours, you know that. Instead of letting her forcibly take it, why not give it willingly, at least you can preserve some dignity."

Joni froze, her lips trembling slightly, her eyes instantly reddening.

She lowered her head, her voice choking, "But... but I’m a female, a protected individual... The protection agency will eventually come to save me. I shouldn’t be treated like this..."

Selene Kane looked at this silly girl, a wave of helplessness and yet couldn’t help but feel sympathy.

She sighed, gently ruffling Joni’s hair.

"Silly girl," she said softly, "in this world, not everything can wait for others to rescue you."

Meanwhile, Zane stood a few steps away.

His eyes were deep, dark as the sea.

He frowned slightly, puzzled.

A female’s pregnancy was supposed to be a great joy, news of the family’s continuation, a happy event worthy of celebration.

If she had spoken sooner, revealed the truth.

These few males wouldn’t look so livid now, silent and oppressive.

Selene Kane sensed his gaze, quietly went over, tiptoeing.

And whispered softly in his ear, "It’s a secret, I know what I’m doing, don’t worry."

Zane paused slightly, then nodded gently.

Only then did she release her hand, which had been quietly gripping his coat hem, stepping back half a step, lowering her gaze.

But this scene was clearly seen by Caleb Shaw not far away.

His ears were quite sharp, no matter how soft Selene Kane’s voice was.

That sentence "it’s a secret" still found its way clearly into his ears.

This female, hiding such a big secret, even he, the legitimate partner, didn’t know, yet this outsider male,

Zane, found out first?
