Chapter 48: Chapter 48: Missed You So Much

A little girl rushed forward and hugged her leg, smiling up at her.

"Miss Kane, we missed you so much! How have you been? Have you had a baby yet? Bring them to play with us!"

"My parents talk about you all the time. If you come back, they’ll be thrilled!"

Selene Kane bent down and gave candies to each of the children.

She remembered the name of each child, calling them with a natural and gentle tone.

She placed candies into their outstretched little hands and gently pinched their cheeks.

Caleb Shaw stood behind her, his handsome face slightly tense, his eyes a bit complex.

He never expected the woman to be so well-liked here.

In his impression, she was an ugly, vicious, and annoying lunatic.

Those years when she was most troublesome at home, everyone in the yard avoided her.

No one wanted to get close to that locked door.

At home, she always had a gloomy face, yelling nonstop.

But now?

Could she coax children so gently?

She squatted on the ground, her knees touching the soil, one hand gently stroking the head of a little Beastman, while the other helped another child wipe away snot.

They say children understand true feelings the best; they know clearly who is good to them.

Adults can pretend to care, can be perfunctory, but children cannot.

This group of little ones surrounded her, scrambling to snuggle into her embrace, some tugging at her sleeve, some hugging her arm, and some even climbing onto her back, repeatedly calling her "sister."

The little Beastmen, not yet fully human-shaped, were chattering non-stop around Selene Kane.

A little girl with rabbit ears looked up, raising her dirty little hand, clamoring for candy.

A boy resembling a wolf cub squeezed to the front, insisting on hugging her first.

They chimed in one after another, their topics ranging from the fruits they ate yesterday to who wet their pants today, all eager for her to hear.

The longing was palpable even to Caleb Shaw.

He originally wanted to expose her pretense in public.

But now, he suddenly didn’t know if he should do it.

He had never seen her smile so purely before.

It wasn’t a cold smile, not a mocking one, nor the strange grin during madness.

Selene Kane actually didn’t like kids very much.

But who could resist a group of little ones with animal ears, in baby voices, calling "sister"?

They ran with their footsteps pattering, their tails wagging like grass in the wind as they came close to rub against her.

Too adorable.

She picked up a little Beastman whose original form was a plump, cubbie cat, feeling its well-nourished body.

The child’s cheeks were round, the flesh piling up at the back of its neck, feeling perfect to the touch.

She couldn’t help but pinch again, making the kid giggle incessantly.

"Xiao Wei has gained weight, let sister give you a kiss."

Selene Kane planted a smooch on the little one’s chubby cheek.

The child stiffened, ears suddenly stood up, and the smile on his face instantly turned to embarrassed anger.

"I’m a boy! You can’t just kiss me!"

He twisted his body trying to break free, kicking his short legs, pushing against her shoulders with both hands.

But Selene Kane’s arms held him firmly.

Instead, she lowered her head and kissed twice more, once on his forehead, once on his nose tip.

This baby voice felt even more touching, almost melting Selene Kane’s heart.

She knew the child was pretending to be tough, his ear tip flushed red, still trying to act serious.

The other kids giggled loudly.

"This time, sister brought lots of candies, you can share them with your siblings."

Selene Kane took out a few paper-wrapped packets from her cloth bag, each tied carefully with string.

She knelt down, handing them out to the children, reminding them not to grab, to take turns, and to save some for those who didn’t come.

The children took the candy carefully.

"Thank you, sister!"

This child was just over two years old, very small, and still a bit unsteady on his feet.

He was born after Selene Kane got married, having seen her only a few times in his life.

Usually, he played with other kids in the tribe.

Hearing there was fun at the village entrance today, he joined a group of older kids to join the excitement.

Selene Kane turned around and winked at Caleb Shaw, her movements light and her mouth slightly upturned.

Seeing him not moving from the spot, raising an eyebrow, she quickly gestured with her eyes to the direction behind the car.

Her lips moved slightly, silently saying, "the trunk."

Caleb Shaw finally understood.

She was reminding him to get the brightly packaged snacks from the trunk.

He then remembered that before setting out, she bought several large bags of snacks at the supermarket, stuffing the trunk until it almost couldn’t close.

He asked casually at the time, and she said to bring them back for distribution.

He didn’t think much of it, assuming it was just a casual remark.

After all, whenever she visited home, she would fill her bag with all kinds of sweets, eating them while reading novels on the way back, feeling refreshed after finishing.

So he never thought she would give all these favorite things away without keeping any for herself.

At first, he saw her take out a few bags of fruit candy.

He thought she was just symbolically distributing them, putting on a show, letting the elders see she understood social customs.

"Come on, kids, line up to get your candies! No pushing, no grabbing, there’s enough for everyone!"

Selene Kane smiled sweetly, her eyes curving into crescent moons, her voice soft and tender.

She crouched down, handing out bags of candy one by one.

Each child receiving the candy was met with her gentle "good girl."

The voice reaching Caleb Shaw’s ears made him unconsciously clench his teeth.

But the kids loved it.

They all smiled widely, clapping their hands in joy, responding in unison: "Okay~"

The little Beastmen immediately lined up in a row.

Though the line was crooked, they stood obediently before Caleb Shaw.

Caleb Shaw stood there, hands in his pockets, suddenly feeling a weight on his shoulders.

He had been through countless battlefields, commanded thousands of troops.

Even when facing the highest commander of the Insectoids.

During video-call confrontations, he had never wavered.

But now, facing this group of children, aged between three and eight.

He felt an unprecedented pressure.

His palms began to sweat lightly, and his Adam’s apple moved slightly.

Selene Kane chimed in with a giggle.

"Big brother is handing out candies, what should we say~"

The kids shouted in unison.

"Thank you~"

Caleb Shaw wished he could disappear on the spot.

The tips of his ears quickly flushed red, spreading from the edges all the way to his neck.

He never expected that once the usually quiet Selene Kane started speaking softly, it would be so unbearable.

When he bought these candies, he didn’t think much of it; he had just heard that kids liked them and casually grabbed a few packs.

But now he felt these candies were too cheap, too brightly colored, and even their packaging looked tacky.

He bent down, a cool gaze, the first little Beastman in line staring with mouth watering, his legs almost going weak.
