The Villainess Redeems Herself, The Beast Husbands are in a Daily Love Battle-Chapter 170: Starting a Business
Instead, witnessing so many dying patients, she made a vow to become a doctor and save more lives.
She wanted to extend the lives of those she couldn’t save, in another way.
But fate, ironically, played the cruelest joke.
Performing her first heart bypass surgery, she was full of confidence and well-prepared.
But the patient turned out to be her most trusted friend.
An uncontrollable massive bleeding occurred during the surgery.
She tried her best, but could only watch the monitor’s curve slowly flatten.
"Dr. Kane, the patient is gone."
She stood in a pool of blood, still wearing her gloves, trembling all over and unable to speak a word.
She couldn’t bear it.
That night, she returned to her dorm, opened the drawer, and took out the scalpel.
Without hesitation, she sliced her wrist.
As the blood gushed out, she surprisingly felt relief.
Before darkness swallowed her, she only remembered her friend’s last message on her phone: "Selene, I believe in you."
But she didn’t die.
Upon waking, she was already in a strange world.
At first, she resisted, angry, feeling she was being used as a tool for reproduction.
But gradually, she started to get used to the sound of this little thing’s breathing.
Logically, she should hate children, so why was she instead grateful that heaven let her give birth?
Why did this existence, which should have broken her, become her only light in this foreign world?
The system was so quiet, like it had lost power, even the usual mechanical sound disappeared.
The room was filled only with the subtle breathing of the baby.
After a while, the familiar electronic voice slowly sounded.
"We will not go against your true thoughts."
"This is your deepest wish."
"Nonsense!"
Selene blurted out, her voice rising.
The child in her arms twitched its mouth lightly, almost about to cry.
She quickly softened her tone, gently patting the baby’s back.
"If I really wanted to have children, I would have had them long ago, why wait until now?"
"One after another, like laying eggs, I’m so exhausted my back is about to break!"
She glanced down at her waist and abdomen, still unhealed post-birth, with resentment in her tone.
But in her eyes, she couldn’t hide her fondness.
She wasn’t truly resentful.
She just... didn’t dare admit that she had actually fallen long ago.
Suddenly, she paused, her voice lowered.
"Caleb, Zane... is he okay now?"
That name, she hadn’t dared mention in a long time.
Each mention was a tug at her heart.
Upon hearing the name, both Caleb and Heath’s faces immediately darkened.
They bowed their heads, with a layer of gray in their eyes.
The air seemed to freeze for a few seconds.
"I asked the lieutenant."
Caleb finally spoke.
"He’s not doing well."
"The army is mostly Terrestrial Beastmen, who are naturally sensitive and repulsive to the Sea-kin scent."
"During training, someone tripped him on purpose, his food was tampered with, and he was ambushed during night patrols..."
"But I’ve already scolded them severely."
He paused, frowning deeply.
"Zane hasn’t complained though, seems he can endure it, so it’s not too bad."
Selene took a deep breath, finally releasing some of the pent-up air in her chest.
She twirled around with the child, her skirt fluttering, hair flying.
"Who am I? I’m your mom!"
She looked down at the child in her arms.
The child giggled as she spun, waving its little hands, face turning red.
But this scene scared the few males standing aside, making them back away.
"Be careful!"
Heath instinctively reached out to assist, but was stopped by Caleb.
Such a small Female Master, with a soft little bundle in her arms, dared to spin around?
Their hearts nearly jumped to their throats.
Afraid she might lose her balance and drop the child.
In this world, females are naturally weaker in constitution, and childbirth is a drain on vitality.
Spinning with a child less than a month post-birth is almost playing with death.
Females have big hearts and lack patience.
Unlike males, who’ve been raising kids since childhood?
In this world, males are the main caregivers.
From changing diapers to soothing to sleep, from preparing milk formula to carrying the child during patrols, all are done by males.
Females, after giving birth, mostly lie weak in bed, with some unable to recover for years.
Who would believe a female could steadily carry a child? 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶
And smile so carefreely?
Mothers raising children, surviving itself is a miracle.
But Selene did more than survive; she thrived as the most unlike "female mother."
She held steadily, walked swiftly, laughed loudly, protective and secure.
Unbeknownst to her, in the eyes of Caleb and Heath, she had long ceased being the weak woman who needed protection.
Instead, she had become a mother they would pledge their lives to guard.
Caleb swiftly wrapped his arm around Selene’s waist, lifting her from the ground and pulling her into his lap firmly.
Caught off-guard, her whole body swayed, eyes widened slightly with surprise.
"What are you doing? So sudden!"
She instinctively held the child in her arms tighter, shielding its small body against her chest.
While she herself was securely enveloped in Caleb’s embrace.
The three huddled closely, their posture intimate.
Selene lowered her eyes to the daughter in her arms, then gave Caleb a sidelong glance and chuckled softly, caught between tears and laughter.
"Is this necessary? Are you afraid I might drop the child? You’re overly nervous."
A small baby isn’t even comparable to an ordinary cushion.
Though she had just given birth and was still somewhat frail, was she really so fragile?
Can’t she even stand steady?
Caleb’s Adam’s apple moved subtly, his gaze resting on her slender waist and the baby girl’s soft face in her arms.
His arms tightened, his palm pressed against her back.
Not applying pressure, not exerting force, yet causing his heart to clench.
He knew that in his arms, he held the two most important beings of his life.
One was his Female Master; the other, his blood-related daughter.
This sense of fulfillment was something he never dared even dream of before.
"Female Master," he spoke lowly, his voice steady, "the floor is slippery."
Selene frowned and looked around, the wooden floor was polished and shining.
Where was it slippery?
She couldn’t help but laugh, bending down to plant two kisses on her daughter’s chubby cheeks.
"Little one, let daddy hold you for a while."
Caleb sighed lightly, his expression still serious, but he smoothly took over the child.
His movements were natural, one hand supporting the head, the other cradling the waist, gently lifting the child into his arms.
Seeing this, Selene smiled slightly, and as Caleb lowered his head to amuse the child, she tiptoed, twisting her body, gracefully slipping off his lap.
She opened her mouth, letting out a long yawn.
"Lying down for so long, my bones almost falling apart; if I don’t get moving, I’ll become an old spider in a web."
There was a lightness in her tone, a spark of liveliness in her eyes.
"Starting today, I’m going out to work! If I stay cooped up any longer, I’ll mildew."
Caleb furrowed his brows, giving her a deep look, but ultimately did not voice any objection.
He knew her well, outwardly gentle and soft, but inwardly stubborn as a mule.
Once she set her mind on something.
Advice wouldn’t help, not even if eight oxen yoked together could drag her back.
