The Villain Mom Awakens — Going Viral by Parenting on a Reality Show-Chapter 171: Mom, Apologize to Naomi Kenway
"I misunderstood her?!" Jane Chandler couldn’t believe those were the first words out of her son’s mouth. He always defended this vicious woman.
"Do you have any idea what your ’good wife’ has done? She knew perfectly well the Old Madam is frail, but she still pushed her around outside, gallivanting about to play mahjong and watch a basketball game! You tell me, does that sound reasonable?!"
At the mention of "basketball," Ethan Shaw subconsciously glanced at Naomi Kenway, his expression darkening slightly.
"The Old Madam is passed out in her bedroom, and it’s all because Naomi Kenway gave her sleeping pills!"
Noticing Ethan’s expression, Jane Chandler thought he was finally seeing her point. "Naomi Kenway is just shameless!" She looked down at Ian, her face a mixture of pity and disappointment. "How many times have I said that Ian should be in my care? Don’t you know how important his early education is? If it weren’t for Naomi Kenway, why would my grandson be so slow? He gets criticized by his teacher at kindergarten, and I lose face at home because of it."
Hearing Jane Chandler’s words, Naomi Kenway’s expression changed instantly. She stared at Jane and said, enunciating every word, "My son is not slow. Not at all. He’s the smartest kid in the world!"
Jane Chandler scoffed. "Putting on a show for me again? Weren’t you the one who let Ian get a fever before? All you do is pretend."
"That’s enough!" Ethan Shaw cut in, his brow furrowed. "Mom, you’re going too far."
Ethan stepped in front of Naomi Kenway and Ian, looking directly at Jane Chandler. "There must be some misunderstanding here. I spend every day with Naomi. Naturally, I know her better than you do."
"You!"
Several family doctors hurried in, carrying their medical bags.
Jane Chandler looked as if she’d seen her saviors. "Quick, go upstairs and check on the Old Madam! She can’t handle this kind of turmoil."
"No!" Naomi Kenway’s brows knitted tightly. "Grandma just barely fell asleep. How can you disturb her again?!"
Because of Naomi Kenway’s objection, the doctors hesitated, unsure what to do.
Jane Chandler strode forward. "I see now. You have a guilty conscience, that’s why you’re afraid to let the doctors examine her!"
Naomi Kenway gave a cold laugh, her gaze fixed on Jane Chandler, her voice as sharp as a hidden blade. "All you do is make baseless accusations. Why don’t you show some proof? What evidence do you have that I gave Grandma sleeping pills?!"
"Part of the reason for Grandma’s insomnia is that her life is too stifling and dull. That’s why I took her out to get some fresh air and relax. After using up some energy, she naturally got tired. It wasn’t because of any sleeping pills! Besides medication, staying in good spirits also makes the body healthier."
Jane Chandler was slightly taken aback. It was the first time she had seen Naomi Kenway with this kind of attitude. Her brows furrowed. "What is this attitude? Is this how you speak to your elders?"
Naomi Kenway let out a laugh, but her eyes turned cold. "When you can’t win an argument, you pull rank as an elder? You’re allowed to curse me out, but I’m not allowed to talk back?"
"I was sick before and couldn’t control my emotions. I knew my behavior was lacking, so I didn’t want to argue with you. But it seems no matter what I do, the prejudice in your heart will never disappear. If you want others to respect you, maybe you should first learn how to respect others!"
Jane Chandler was stunned into silence by the retort. For the first time, she truly scrutinized Naomi Kenway. If not for her unchanged appearance, she would have thought the person before her wasn’t Naomi Kenway at all.
Ethan Shaw had understood the gist of the situation. "Since Grandma is asleep, let’s not disturb her. Actually, if we want to know if Naomi Kenway used sleeping pills, we can just ask the maids who were with Grandma. I’m guessing you didn’t get the full story of what happened today, did you, Mom?"
He cast a meaningful glance in the butler’s direction.
The butler instinctively lowered his head, avoiding the intense, pressuring gaze.
Jane Chandler looked at the current stalemate. "What if Naomi Kenway has already gotten to the maids..."
Ethan Shaw chuckled. "In just one day?"
After saying it, Jane Chandler also felt it was impossible. She had personally selected almost all the servants here. And the ones attending to Susan Hughes were old retainers who had been with her for many years; the possibility of them being bought off by Naomi Kenway was slim.
Jonathan Shaw had already spoken up, saying to the butler, "Call down the ladies who were attending to Mom."
Soon, several women came down, led by Heather Woods, an old servant who had been with Susan Hughes for many years.
Jonathan Shaw asked, "Aunt Helen, you were with the Old Madam all day today, correct?"
Heather Woods nodded, looking a little puzzled at the rather tense scene before her.
Jonathan Shaw continued, "Did you see Nicole give the Old Madam sleeping pills?"
Jane Chandler shot him a glare. "Who would do it so obviously? Aunt Helen, did Naomi Kenway do anything unusual today? Think carefully."
Heather Woods then pieced together what was happening. She was a bit uncomfortable being stared at so intensely by everyone. "I was with Sister Susan the whole time. Nicole was constantly trying to cheer her up. How could she possibly have used sleeping pills? She never has! Madam, you must have misunderstood something."
Jane Chandler’s expression changed. She then asked the other maids behind her, and their answers were the same as Heather Woods’s.
Heather Woods added, "The Old Mistress was in high spirits today. She had a lot of congee for dinner. I’ve rarely seen her so relaxed since she fell ill."
Jane Chandler’s brow was tightly furrowed.
Ethan Shaw said, "See, Mom? It was all a misunderstanding. You should apologize to Naomi Kenway."
"Me, apologize?" Jane Chandler’s expression was unnatural. "Since when does an elder apologize to a junior?"
Jonathan Shaw looked at her disapprovingly. "If you’re wrong, you apologize. A family can’t have rifts between them."
"But we might not be family for long..." Jane Chandler muttered under her breath.
Jonathan Shaw said, "What did you say?"
"Nothing." Jane Chandler composed herself and said to Naomi Kenway, "I was out of line just now. Don’t take it to heart."
Jonathan Shaw also said, "Your mother has a bit of a short temper. She was in the wrong to blame you for this. Nicole, you really worked hard today. The Old Madam has had insomnia for days; it’s rare for her to sleep so soundly."
He glanced outside. It was already late. "Have you had dinner?"
"We’ve eaten," Naomi Kenway said flatly. "It’s getting late. I’m going to take Ian home now."
Jonathan Shaw nodded. "Children don’t much like being out at night. Drive safe on your way home."
Ethan Shaw didn’t show any intention of leaving. Naomi Kenway couldn’t be bothered with him and just took Ian’s hand.
The small, soft hand was warm, and Naomi Kenway squeezed it instinctively.
"Wait," Ethan Shaw said.
He took off his own jacket and draped it over Naomi Kenway’s shoulders. "It’s cold outside. You only brought a jacket for Ian. Remember to bring one for yourself next time."
"I’ll have the driver take you home first. I’ll head back later."
Naomi Kenway glanced back at him. "Thanks."
