The Vampire King's Pet-Chapter 324: Dead Mother{2}
The words were enough to send cold and undiluted fear down the spines of both Aira and Liora the second they heard them.
It was a shrill woman’s voice—almost soft—but it might as well have been a thunderstorm as they both instantly bolted back into the room like their lives depended on it.
Mirroring expressions of horror on their faces. But barely had they barged through the door when that horror turned into something more dreadful as they found it to be empty.
Aira didn’t hesitate, ignoring the fear in her heart, aware that all she needed to do was get to her mother. Regardless of whatever injury she had, she was bound to be able to heal it.
Jumping down the window the instant she got to it, without worry of breaking her bones—but barely had she jumped down when her heart seemed to splinter and break into a thousand pieces.
For Aira, it felt like someone had grabbed her throat and was strangling her as she found it almost impossible to breathe.
Gasping for air as she watched Liora collapse on the floor, even as she screamed. A look of pure, undiluted horror on her face as she screamed at Aira, who seemed to find it impossible to hear her, even as she watched Liora’s mouth move. 𝕗𝚛𝚎𝚎𝐰𝗲𝗯𝗻𝚘𝚟𝚎𝗹.𝕔𝐨𝕞
For a split second, it was almost like all sounds had disappeared from the world, as she watched Liora wail, right before it all came roaring back.
"HEAL HER!" Liora screamed in anger, her voice carrying through the air. "Heal her!" she ordered Aira, even as more tears streamed down her face, and she knelt on the ground wailing, even as Aira froze right on the spot.
Staring at her almost like her mind was doing its best to stop her from staring at the corpse of her mother, whose heart had most likely stopped beating the second she jumped.
Her neck had broken on impact. It most likely had to do with the way she angled her body as she jumped.
Aira’s mind mechanically processed it, trying to fill the empty space in her brain, as she stared at Liora, aware that there was absolutely nothing she could do that could fix it.
I... I can’t... she’s gone... she thought, surprised to reach for her face and touch it, and find tears streaming down her cheeks as she did her best to wipe them off, surprised that they were even there.
Hands shaking as she finally looked down at the body on the ground that belonged to her mother. Even as she heard Liora gasping for breath while holding the body close to her chest, blood splaying out of her dead mouth.
"It’s my fault! It’s my fault!" Liora mumbled under her breath, with a slightly crazed expression on her face that would have worried Aira if she wasn’t out of it.
If her brain wasn’t finding it difficult to stare at the person she had only spoken to a few moments before. It was gut-wrenching to think of the things she could have done to stop it.
Even more, to realize that she could have stopped it.
I... I could have stopped it! she thought to herself, opening her mouth to speak but unable to.
Tears ran down her face faster as she stood there staring at Liora hug the body to her chest as she continued to wail.
A crowd had, of course, gathered until they realized what had happened, before scurrying off.
Their fear wasn’t Aira, but Zyren. The last thing they wanted to do was displease Zyren, and they all knew that at the moment, Zyren’s pleasure was Aira—something he didn’t try to hide like all his other pets before her.
It was simply a miracle that, unlike the rest, she was still very much alive.
They were given a long while before finally Liora was pulled away from the body by Aira, who couldn’t stomach what was happening but found it even harder to watch her sister slowly fade away as she stared at their mother’s body.
Hugging her as tightly as she could while whispering into her ears.
"You’ll be fine! I’m here for you!" Aira assured her, even as tears streamed down her own face, doing her best to make sure that Liora didn’t crash and burn.
Unlike their mother, who was already dead. The thought that her sister could also lose her mind worried her, having registered the blank look in her eyes.
Enough to haunt her as she hugged her fiercely, like she was trying to squeeze her dry.
But Aira was still hugging her when suddenly Liora jerked, like she had been pulled away from wherever her mind had traveled.
Pulling away as hard as she could from Aira the second she was able to, with Aira not being able to force it.
A haunted look on Liora’s face as she looked around, then at the blood in her hands, and back at the corpse on the floor which belonged to their mother, before uttering words that terrified Aira, who was silently crying.
"It’s... it’s my fault! It’s my fault!" she muttered under her breath in an almost crazed fashion, shaking her head at the same time with wild eyes.
"It’s my fault!" Even as Aira shook her head, tears running down her face, taking a step closer to her, but the second she did, Liora instantly turned around and bolted.
Her skirts swishing around her as she fled like someone that was being chased, even as Aira’s heart seemed to break even more, tears running down her face harder than before.
Too fast, and sliding down her cheeks before she could wipe them with the back of her sleeve. Glancing back to see her mother, who still lay dead on the ground, unmoving.
She was dead, and no ability could bring her back. The realization made her dizzy as she held her hands to her head, stumbling back, only to collide with something—or someone—that shouldn’t have been there.
