The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 428 - 421: Good News and Bad News
Chapter 428: Chapter 421: Good News and Bad News
Flames were burning, and screams were unending.
An armored vehicle’s rear hatch had opened, with only one of the two doors swinging open. An enemy tumbled out from the smoke onto the ground and then struggled to crawl forward a few steps.
Lying on the ground, Gao Yuan hesitated. Rocket-propelled grenades could easily destroy the armored vehicles one by one, but as long as the crew compartments were not directly hit, the infantry inside stood a good chance of escaping.
This one was different. The armored vehicle seemed to have been hit in the middle and was ablaze with fire. Gao Yuan initially thought no one inside could have survived.
The enemies realized their plight. They, who had arrived with fierce momentum ready to hunt, suddenly found themselves as the prey being hunted, and they began to fight back.
An armored vehicle turned its front toward the direction from which the rockets were fired. In this way, the vehicle body could provide extremely necessary cover for the infantry dismounting from the back. Then both rear doors opened, and armed soldiers one after another came out and quickly lay down, starting suppressive fire toward the position from which the rockets had come, which was the direction of Sirte and Klaus.
Ashraf was to the side of these men, but Ralph was behind them.
Gao Yuan was the closest, just less than thirty meters away from these men.
In front of him was an infantryman trying to escape, and to the right were eight intact soldiers. Gao Yuan thought for a moment and decided to throw the hand grenade to the right.
Taking advantage of the enemy not yet scattered, the hand grenade could be more effective. Better to go for the larger group, and as for the one in front of him, leaving him alive to capture as a "tongue" would be just perfect.
Gao Yuan’s thrown hand grenade was air-burst, which, due to the close distance, could not miss, and he could also precisely control the timing of the grenade’s explosion to ensure it burst in the air.
Another wave of ghastly screams followed. The enemies were all wearing bulletproof vests; they were elites, and their combat equipment was very good. But the formal battle was over, and what was left was the mopping up of the enemies.
It was indeed a mopping up, as there were only a few enemies left who could still move.
Someone had noticed Gao Yuan. The power of the grenade was great, but not great enough to kill eight people with one blast, so most of these men were only wounded, although severely, and they were still a threat to Gao Yuan, who was within arm’s reach.
Just then, rhythmic gunshots rang out—pop, pop, pop, continuous short bursts. Gao Yuan turned to look and found that Sirte had managed to get around the fire blockade and had run over at some point. Now he was systematically execute the remaining stubborn soldiers one by one.
The fight was officially over.
Gao Yuan sprang up like a grasshopper, leaping out from the bushes, stepping in front of the soldier who had escaped from the burning crew compartment, pinning down his hand, and saying, "Hmm, no kill if you surrender your weapon."
Gao Yuan spoke in English. Although he wasn’t particularly talented with languages, phrases like "no kill if you surrender your weapon" were certainly learnable.
The soldier spoke in a weak voice, and then Gao Yuan realized he was speaking Russian.
Awkward, still a language barrier.
Gao Yuan got up, waved his hand, and then, worried about getting shot, quickly crouched down again. Immediately, he spoke into the radio, "Nemesis calling Renato, we’re done here, you can proceed in peace and continue rescuing the wounded, over."
Renato was extremely surprised, "We won?"
"Yes, we won."
When he said the word "victory," Gao Yuan felt relieved, but Renato was extremely surprised. He exclaimed loudly, "I was ready to flee at any moment, and you’re telling me we actually won?"
This victory was indeed hard to believe, but it was real and unequivocal.
Gao Yuan felt deeply moved.
As a commander, Gao Yuan lacked experience; and as a warrior, he remained always out of sync with his comrades, because no one could keep up with his pace, nor could anyone work with him.
When one is not quite qualified as a commander and very lonely as a soldier, Gao Yuan appeared strong, but his effectiveness was greatly diminished. War has never been something that can be swayed by one or a few super warriors.
The battlefield that suited Gao Yuan best was not here, not on the plains of Africa fighting the enemy’s armored corps. The battlefield most suitable for Gao Yuan was actually in cities dense with zombies, but Gao Yuan had left the place where he could best demonstrate his abilities and was instead fighting the enemy’s tanks and armored vehicles in this open wilderness.
However, today all that had finally changed.
At last, Gao Yuan found his place, where he could fully exhibit his talent when dealing with tanks and armored vehicles on the march, and this brought him some comfort.
Otherwise, being an exceptional warrior without a place to fully apply his skills would indeed have been quite painful.
Klaus also hurried over. He had to act as the translator; otherwise, Gao Yuan would have language issues when dealing with Sirte.
"We used ten rockets and destroyed eight armored vehicles."
The usually calm Klaus could not hide his excitement. After speaking quickly, he immediately bowed his head to the prisoner Gao Yuan was stepping on and demanded, "Speak, where are you from?"
The prisoner muttered a few words in a low voice. Klaus switched languages and after a rapid-fire exchange with the prisoner, he told Gao Yuan, "This unit is all from Ukraine, but... the situation doesn’t look good."
Klaus’s excitement had vanished without a trace. A foreboding feeling grew stronger in Gao Yuan’s heart, and he asked urgently, "What happened? What’s wrong?"
Klaus replied quietly, "They arrived too quickly, so I asked them why they could get here so fast. His answer was that they had already completed their gathering and were hastily dispatched here."
"What does ’completed their gathering’ mean?"
Klaus pointed to the south and said, "They have a field base there. They’ve gathered a lot of troops and have formed a semi-encirclement around Ram, preparing for an all-out assault on Ram’s base, and we have... just bumped headlong into this..."
It made sense. Even if the assault vehicles had discovered Spark Squad’s tracks, how could the tanks and armored vehicles have arrived so quickly? It turned out that the enemy wasn’t rushing over at all, but were already here, merely mowing the grass to catch a rabbit, preparing to wipe out Spark Squad along the way.
The combination of tanks and mechanized infantry was an indication that the enemy held Spark Squad in high regard, deploying such forces against a small team that had suffered heavy losses.
Although Spark Squad had once again miraculously annihilated this troop, the problem was still far from resolved.
"Ask him exactly how many enemies there are!"
Gao Yuan was urgent, but Klaus was helpless as he said, "A full-strength Ukrainian Mechanized Infantry Brigade, an American Tank Regiment, a Multinational Combined Mechanized Infantry Regiment—that’s what he knows, but there are certainly more than these..."
Gao Yuan fell silent, and then he said in a low voice, "Then we..."
Klaus sighed and said, "The most troublesome thing is, during the fight earlier, the enemy had plenty of time to call for reinforcements, and one of their field camps is less than thirty kilometers from us. The good news is, it will take them about an hour to get here."
Gao Yuan said helplessly, "The bad news is, they can get here in just an hour, and if the enemy continues to send assault vehicles, then they won’t even need an hour."
Klaus whispered, "The bad news I wanted to say is, the enemy might already be aware of your existence and have specifically issued a warning."
