Chapter 421: Chapter 414 Crossfire

Gao Yuan was somewhat bewildered; he didn’t even know where the bullets were coming from.

Li Jingang reached out to pull open the car door, his voice cracking as he yelled, "Get out, run!"

Song Qian slammed on the brakes, and at that moment, Gao Yuan heard the sound of machine gun fire from the back of the truck.

"Get out..."

Song Qian was spitting blood as he muttered, "Go, go quickly!"

Gao Yuan finally snapped out of his brief trance. He abruptly sat up, grabbed Li Jingang’s clothes, and threw him out of the truck. Then he leaned over, grabbed Song Qian, who was unable to move at all, and as he jumped out of the truck, he pulled Song Qian out of the cab with him.

Cao Zhenjiang was operating the machine gun in the back of the truck. He moved the muzzle swiftly, bellowing loudly, as he fired the heavy machine gun at a target.

Following the direction of Cao Zhenjiang’s gunfire, Gao Yuan saw a tiny assault vehicle that looked more like a toy than a real car leaping out from behind a mound. It flew through the air for thirty or forty meters before landing hard, then continued to drive forward at high speed.

Gao Yuan estimated that the speed of the assault vehicle was no less than a hundred kilometers per hour.

Cao Zhenjiang didn’t hit the rapidly moving assault vehicle, and at that moment, his body suddenly collapsed to one side without any warning.

On either side of Cao Zhenjiang were two bright red flags, and Cao Zhenjiang’s blood spattered onto the vibrant red fabric.

Nie Erlong fell headfirst to the ground, causing Gao Yuan’s heart to tighten as he worried that Nie Erlong might have killed himself with that fall.

All three trucks had come to a complete stop. Yu Shunzhou and Ashraf, flanking Xinghe, jumped off the truck behind Gao Yuan and the others. Yu Shunzhou then immediately pushed Xinghe to the front side of the vehicle and tried to get her to duck down.

The enemy fire was coming from the left, so Yu Shunzhou brought Xinghe to the right side of the front, trying to use the front of the vehicle as cover to get through the first wave.

But just as Yu Shunzhou pushed Xinghe down, he shuddered in a strange way. Then before he could fire his gun that had just been placed on the hood, he fell onto it and then slid down the front of the vehicle with his face against the hood.

"Crossfire! Get down!"

Li Jingang let out a desperate shout. Then, without any cover, Ashraf lay on the ground. However, after quickly crawling forward for two meters, he suddenly leaped up, raised his gun, and fired a shot with a bang.

Gao Yuan turned his head and saw, to his right, an assault car that was stationary and sweeping the area with a machine gun.

Ashraf’s shot hit the machine gunner who was firing. Just one shot, and as he fired a second, the stationary assault vehicle suddenly shot forward, picking up speed, quickly drove behind a large tree, then with a turn of the vehicle’s head, it rapidly descended behind a series of small hills.

"Four o’clock!"

The three trucks weren’t far from each other. When Ralph yelled his lungs out, two rifles and a light machine gun from Egg Bomb Squad immediately fired toward their four o’clock direction, which was three o’clock for Gao Yuan, targeting the enemy.

Another assault vehicle appeared; Ralph wasn’t hit, but one of his team members silently collapsed. Of the three firing, bullets hit the vehicle, and instantly the machine gun mounted on the hidden assault vehicle behind a clump of grass fell silent.

One assault vehicle charged ahead, one lost its gunner and the driver fled, and one’s machine gun temporarily ceased fire. Yet, within seconds, the machine gun resumed firing.

Green Hat opened fire, and his machine gun poured bullets all over the assault vehicle that had fired for the second time. After a prolonged burst, the twice-fired-upon assault vehicle fell silent once more.

Gao Yuan finally pulled out his first hand grenade, only to realize that the enemy on the right was only half of the problem; there were enemies on the left as well.

Yuri hadn’t even been able to get down from the vehicle.

Liu Deguang hadn’t been able to dismount either, since he was also driving a vehicle. He and Lizhizi had stayed in the cab without coming out at all.

The enemy had preemptively occupied advantageous terrain and used crossfire to blockade Spark Squad with gunfire, instantly crushing them.

Spark Squad was indeed in total disarray and utterly incapable of organizing any effective counterattack because the enemy’s bullets were coming from all directions in a sudden assault.

Spark Squad had ambushed François’s men, and before long, the Sanitation Worker’s rapid response force arrived ahead of Gao Yuan and his team, setting up an ambush for them instead of pursuing.

To run was futile; to fight, the enemy held the terrain advantage, now engaging in crossfire from at least four different directions.

But at this moment, most of the mobile members of Spark Squad had already hit the ground, and in combat, as long as it wasn’t face-to-face close-quarters shooting, hitting the ground could immediately greatly reduce the likelihood of being shot.

"Break the enemy’s fire blockade, or none of us will survive!"

Gao Yuan held the grenade firmly, yet didn’t know where to throw it. Li Jingang grabbed Gao Yuan’s ankle from the side, struggling to lift his head and whispered, "You’re fast. Charge through, use the hand grenade to take out the enemy. If the enemy wants to shoot accurately, they can’t move. Even if they are forced to move, the fire blockade will be broken."

"Understood!"

Gao Yuan immediately charged out.

Only Gao Yuan got shot twice without consequence, because he was always wearing double-layered bulletproof plates.

Gao Yuan saw an armored assault vehicle, still in place using its mounted machine gun to fire, about four hundred meters away.

Four hundred meters was the perfect range for a general-purpose or heavy machine gun to exert its firepower, but it was a bit far for an assault rifle.

Gao Yuan threw a hand grenade straightaway.

The hand grenade didn’t hit the assault vehicle directly, but exploded not far from it. Startled by the blast, the assault vehicle immediately began to move, and once it started moving, the mounted machine gun on the vehicle lost its threat and promptly ceased firing.

The situation was extremely tough.

Gao Yuan looked in the direction of the gunfire and saw another assault vehicle about five hundred meters to his left.

So far, Gao Yuan had seen a total of six assault vehicles, spread out in six directions, the nearest at three hundred meters and the furthest at over seven hundred meters. For machine guns, this distance was not an issue.

Spark Squad was completely surrounded—not in a traditional sense, but they were indeed encircled.

A series of bullets were fired at Gao Yuan, but with his extremely fast speed and his irregular, rapid advance, it was difficult, or rather nearly impossible, for the enemy to aim at him. Not even the sweeping rain of bullets could envelop him.

Gao Yuan’s speed had reached its limit, and he hadn’t even realized it.
