The Ultimate War Of The Apocalypse-Chapter 384 - 377: Sanctuary
Chapter 384: Chapter 377: Sanctuary
The caravan couldn’t be described as mighty, but in the desert, even a few cars can create a feeling that they cover the sky and block out the sun.
Gao Yuan and his group were assigned to a large bus that had seen better days; its seats were tattered and torn, and most of its windows were missing glass. Therefore, this bus either had to drive at the very front or at the very back, otherwise, the entire vehicle would be filled with sand.
In fact, the bus was already full of sand, so they didn’t really care if more got in.
Despite that, Gao Yuan was genuinely excited and happy to be able to use a car again, an object that once represented human civilization.
From afar, they could see a not-so-tall building, but only as they got closer did they realize it was almost a ruin. The control tower was only half-standing, and it was unclear whether it had collapsed after being shelled.
The airport terminal building was not small and covered a large area. It had been the main stronghold for Nate’s people, who had been in a long stand-off with the Sanitation Workers, so naturally, it had been bombed to bits.
A lot of people emerged from the nearly ruined terminal, cheering and shouting in celebration of victory.
Although it was a scene of celebration, Gao Yuan watched with deep concern.
The situation at Nate’s place wasn’t optimistic; the terrain was destined to be surrounded. If they couldn’t leave before the Sanitation Workers attacked again, there would be trouble.
The car actually drove straight into the terminal.
Gao Yuan had always wondered about the origin of Nate’s vehicles—they should have been destroyed in the long conflict, given that he had so many at his disposal.
When the car entered the terminal, Gao Yuan understood. It turned out there was an underground parking lot, and the space was surprisingly large. Once inside, it was noticeable that most areas were vacant and had been converted into living spaces.
A place that could serve as parking, living quarters, and withstand artillery was indeed suitable as a defended fortress.
Gao Yuan got out of the car in the parking lot, and as they curiously examined their surroundings, Nate got out of his car and strode over to Gao Yuan.
"Do you want to visit my command base, or my office?"
Nate asked a question out of the blue. Gao Yuan paused and said, "Is there a difference?"
"There is, my command base is over there."
Nate pointed to a large tent in the parking lot and said calmly, "I mainly live and conduct operations on the surface because I don’t like living underground, but my formal office and residence are below. So, if you’d like to take a look, I can show you."
As a survival fanatic, could Gao Yuan possibly lack interest in an underground shelter? Of course not. So, he happily said, "I’d like to take a look at your underground area."
Nate gestured with his hand and said, "Follow me."
Nate walked out confidently. He left the large parking area, saluting the soldiers who saluted him along the way. Upon reaching a separate passage, Gao Yuan saw a distinct parking area come to a stop.
Two soldiers stood guard at the entrance of the parking lot. Once inside, it became apparent that the lot was much smaller and deserted, except for a large entrance where at least ten people stood posted.
As Nate led Gao Yuan and the others closer, ten soldiers in Deban camouflage snapped to attention and saluted. Nate returned the salute and then stopped. He pointed towards the massive entrance and said, "Here is our core base, a huge underground bunker."
Having come from Taihang Mountain Base, Gao Yuan was no longer intimidated by the scale of the underground bunker, but it was still impressive.
"It’s huge."
"Yes, this underground bunker covers an area of 26,664 square meters, with a height of twelve meters and sitting thirty meters below ground level. It offers excellent protection, housing approximately six thousand tons of food, four hundred million rounds of ammunition, over twenty thousand firearms of various types, and a large number of shells, rocket projectiles, and grenades."
Gao Yuan walked up to the entrance and took a glance inside. It was pitch black, impossible to see anything clearly.
Nate’s aide spoke into a walkie-talkie, and several lights came on in the bunker. However, like streetlights at night, they only illuminated a very small area. In comparison to the entire underground space, the lighting was practically negligible.
"It’s too big in here. To fully light it up, we need to start the generator, but to save fuel, we don’t start it unless necessary. Please, follow me."
After Nate finished speaking, his aide turned on a flashlight.
At this moment, Gao Yuan couldn’t help asking, "For a secret base, is it okay to have the entrance wide open like this?"
Nate nodded and said, "Yes, I’ve let every soldier come and see for themselves. Only by doing so can they find enough motivation to keep fighting. The Biliya People’s will to fight is actually very weak, but if they know that all their food, the very thing they depend on for survival, is here, and if taken by the enemy they would starve, even cowards will explode with great fighting power."
It made sense. Knowing that the essentials for their survival were right there and fully visible would certainly provide a different level of determination to fight to the end.
Gao Yuan nodded repeatedly, saying, "Well said, very sensible. So who built this bunker? Was it Ram?"
As Nate walked further inside, he said gravely, "No, this bunker was built by Fikaza, but he was killed before he ever had the chance to come here. One of Ram’s men got ahold of Fikaza’s watch, which contained the location and the keys to this bunker. Then, Ram and I came here seeking treasure and wrested control of this place from the enemy. Since then, I’ve used it as a base until the apocalypse truly arrived, which was when it was put into use."
Gao Yuan couldn’t resist saying, "That sounds quite legendary and interesting as well."
Looking up slightly, Nate let out a sigh and said, "Yes, it’s indeed a story full of legends. Uh, please look over here, all these are munitions."
The aide shone the flashlight towards the side, where heaps of boxes were piled up. Many people couldn’t help but gasp, as the flashlight revealed the vastness of the underground space.
Gao Yuan and his group stayed close, and Yu Shunzhou couldn’t help saying, "Building such a huge bunker in the desert is pretty challenging."
Nate chuckled, then stretched out his hand and said, "This way, all of this is food, mainly wheat, but also corn, as well as a small portion of dehydrated vegetables and canned meat."
Gao Yuan asked, "All stockpiled by Fikaza?"
Nate shook his head and said, "No, since receiving solid information about Poseidon, we’ve updated the food here and increased the stock. In other words, most of the supplies here were added in recent years. Uh, we knew the Aliens were coming, just not when. Luckily, we prepared in time."
