Chapter 60: Chapter 60

"Is everything okay?" Mina asked her.

"Yeah. Yes, I’m alright." She forced a smile but Mina knew nothing was alright. Why would she be so disturbed by her brother’s message? Also, since when did she have a brother?

"Right. Let’s talk about important matters." She pretended to be alright but she felt dizzy thinking about Gabe.

Mina was going on about something but she couldn’t hear a word of it.

"Mmh." She hummed in response to something Mina had said.

"What the hell is ’mmh’? I asked what logo you find fitting." Mina tapped the screen with several logo ideas and sighed when Avery didn’t look like she had been checking any of them out.

"You know what? I think you should take the night off and deal with this after handling the matter about your brother." Mina turned off her screen.

This time, Avery did not resist. "Okay."

"Take care of her for me." She spoke towards the father and son.

"I will," Damon answered, only for her to huff.

"Not you. I was talking to Angel." Mina glared at him. "You stay the fuck away from her if you can’t do anything apart from cause her this much distress."

He was helpless. The only thing he had done to her was give her two earth-shattering orgasms and she would probably be in the mood for one more if Gabe didn’t come into the picture.

He let Mina scold him to her heart’s fill, hug Angel and leave, then he went over to Avery who looked like the world was crashing down on her.

"Hey." He brought her a glass of water.

She nodded and took it, thanking him softly.

"Are you afraid of him?"

She glanced over at him. "Did you give your mother my address six years ago?"

"No." He was puzzled but it was not the time for him to satisfy his curiosity. "I knew my family hated you. I would never give them your address."

She smiled bitterly. "I thought so."

He had more questions than he did earlier. "Are you saying Gabe was behind it?"

"I think so." She gulped down all the water although she was no longer in the mood for it. "When Angel was born, I nearly lost him. One minute, he was in the incubator, the next, Gabe was fiddling with the switches and trying to take my son out of it." Her hands trembled.

Hearing yet another thing that nearly went wrong thanks to his absence, he wished he could drop dead from guilt. However, it wasn’t time to battle guilt and think about the past so he placed a hand on her shoulder. "It’s alright. I’ll not let him get anywhere near our son."

She frowned for an instant. If he said that kind of thing in the past, she would call him out for bluffing. Gabe had a retinue of supporters only he knew where he found, but in recent years, so did Damon.

"I don’t want to think about it. Why don’t we put Angel to bed?"

"Yeah, good idea." He led the way and leaned over the boy who was drawing something on a piece of paper.

"It’s time to sleep, buddy. Are you sleepy?"

As if that was the cue he needed to want to go to bed, he held his arms out to be carried. Damon was relieved when the boy let him carry him to his room.

He grabbed a pair of pajamas and showed it Angel, helping him change when he got his approval. He then put him in bed and gave a book to Avery.

"Do you want to read tonight?" He asked.

She shook her head and slid in bed next to Angel and waited for him to read. He gazed down at their identical, anticipating eyes dotingly and opened the book. "I guess it’s my turn then."

"...and the prince and the princess lived happily ever after." He finished the story and closed the book, only to find they were both asleep, lulled by his soothing voice. He kissed Angel’s forehead and leaned over to stroke Avery’s face, then wondered whether she would sleep here tonight.

She was still wearing her shoes so he guessed not. He carried her off Angel’s bed gently and took her to her room, where he carefully placed her on the bed and slid the shoes off her feet. After massaging her reddish feet to relax them, he straightened up to leave, only for his hand to be grabbed by her.

"You are not asleep. How naughty of you." He smiled down at her.

She opened her eyes and rose to kneel on the bed, pulling him over to her. How else would she have gotten him into her room without saying a word about it?

She circled her arms around his torso and looked up at him with a pair of pleading eyes. "Stay with me."

"Because you’re distressed?" He knew she didn’t like to be alone when she had a lot going on, and he wasn’t sure what to do. "You might regret this tomorrow."

She rolled her eyes. "I’m a grown woman, silly. I know what I want."

Something told him he had not comprehended the meaning of his words and her heated gaze was enough evidence of that.

"And what do you want?" He probed, his voice sounding deeper and breathless.

"You." She licked her bottom lip while still looking up at him, her chin pressed against his abs.

He gently pried her hands off her and headed towards the door, rendering her confused.

"Wait, Damon." She slid off the bed. "It’s okay if you don’t want to. We can just...watch a movie or something. We’ve done that before, right?" She looked at him pleadingly. "I just don’t want to think about Gabe."

The few seconds it took him to get to the door felt like ages and she couldn’t figure out what she had said to set him off. Was it because she asked him to pretend nothing happened between them earlier, only to try and seduce him barely a few hours later? She had to admit, it was annoying.

But just when she thought he was going to walk out, he locked the door and ripped his shirt open. Her jaw dropped.

"I can’t stand the possibility of being distracted." He explained with his second ripped shirt of the day still in his hands. He dropped it and reached her faster than she thought possible, then he pushed her onto the bed.

She parted her legs to let him between them and arched her back when he kissed the sensitive spot on her neck.

"When I’m done with you, Gabe will be the last name on your mind." He tore her blouse open, sending the tiny buttons scattering all over the bed in the same fate as his shirt.

"Damon!" She berated him with a laugh.

"Do you need me to be gentle?" He asked with a hand fondling her boob more intensely than ever.

"No." She shook her head and pushed him so she’d straddle him. She opened his belt and leaned over to say in his ear, "fuck me hard."

"You still can’t say that looking at me."

"Fuck you." She punched his chest and they both laughed.

"I swear, you two are bunnies." Mina remarked when she arrived in the morning. Avery had just left her room, sleepy, with her hair looking like a bird’s nest.

"Mina, what are you doing here?" She yawned. "Is Angel awake?"

"For the last few hours, yes." She shrugged.

When Damon left her room behind her, shirtless, she slapped her forehead. Unaware that Mina was here, he wrapped his arms around her and kissed her neck. "What’s the rush?"

She cleared her throat and jabbed him, and only then did he notice the woman who was shocked witless.

"You know what? I’ll come back in a bit. I think I left my milk boiling." She grabbed the documents she had brought and made a beeline for the door.

"Stop right there." Avery called after her and turned to Damon. "Put on some clothes."

She straightened her hair and since her nightgown was decent enough, joined Mina on the couch.

"Am I late for work? Is that why you came looking for me?"

"You asked me to come early today to go over what we didn’t get to do last night."

"Right." She ran a hand through her messy hair. "I’m so sorry."

"It’s okay. I get it." Mina didn’t think it made sense to open the files when it was almost time to get going. "Hey, did you guys fuck and make up?"

"What the hell? No." She noticed Mina’s odd gaze and followed it to the slightly exposed curve of her boob, where an obvious hickey was peeking through the fabric. "Heavens," she couldn’t deny it anymore.

"Mina, you are not getting any details."

"Come on, don’t be so boring." Mina grabbed her hand to beg for specifics with her eyes. She was way too gossipy for her own good. "Is Angel going to get a little sister soon?"

Avery’s eyes went wide when she thought about it.

Mina understood the look and her joke turned into horror. "Oh God. Don’t tell me he didn’t wrap it."

She neither agreed nor denied it, speechless at her own oversight. She rubbed her temples. "Do you think Damon has a superpower than renders me brainless when I’m with him?" She wondered aloud. How could she forget such a thing?

"That jerk." Mina growled.

"He is, but so am I." She pursed her lips. "Yeah, time to stay away from him–or get on birth control." she added after a few seconds.

It was more sane to stay away since a day was all it had taken for her mind to be lost.
