Chapter 169: Chapter 169

"What’s taking so long?" Gabe yelled at Nero, who was doing his best trying to recover the footage of Mina’s disappearance. People didn’t just vanish out of thin air.

Nero was the best at what he did. He had helped Gabe countless times, proving the rumor about him hacking into the police databases by the time he was ten to be true. If anyone had a chance of hacking into Fort Knox, it was him.

Still, Gabe thought he was way too slow right now.

Each second that passed was pure torture. He didn’t know who had Mina and if they had decided to torture her...or worse.

He couldn’t let his brain trail to the latter. She had to be alive. She was waiting for him, which was why Nero had to bring his A-game.

Finally, the man looked up from his computer. "Found it."

Gabe rushed over. "Where is she?"

All he could see was a green dot on the screen that signified his wife’s location. He could see that she was in the middle of some forest, but he couldn’t quite place her exact location.

He was impressed. He had thought Nero was spending all this time trying to find the footage but it turned out, the young man had done better than that. He had located the man who took Mina as well.

"Is she still in Imperium?" He asked, realizing the dot was not moving.

"Luckily, yes." Said Nero. "They must be in some cabin in the woods. I’ll need you to drive so I can keep..." he stopped speaking when Gabe ran out of the room and grabbed his keys. "Okay."

Gabe made a beeline for the garage with Nero hot on his tail. He floored the accelerator as soon as the car doors closed.

Nero jerked forward, not having had the chance to fasten his safety belt yet. He grabbed it and pulled it over his chest, fastening it in seconds. "I’m starting to regret putting you behind the wheel."

"Just tell me which way to go." Gabe demanded. "Left or right?"

They were getting close to an intersection. "Left!"

Gabe swerved left, nearly bumping into a car coming from the opposite direction while at it.

"Left!" Nero yelled again, as they had reached the next intersection way too soon with Gabe having run a red light.

This lunatic was going to get them arrested if they didn’t die first, he thought.

The only consolation was that they weren’t that far from the green dot now.

"Wait." Nero said as they drove into the woods.

"I’m busy saving my wife." Gabe snapped.

"Yeah, and you will be too busy getting caught to save her if you don’t listen to what I have to say." Nero raised a brow. "Your car is white, not exactly the color to be driving around in the woods if you’re trying to stay hidden."

This time, Gabe stopped to listen. "What now?"

"We get out of the car and go there on foot." Nero suggested.

Gabe nodded. Not that they had much choice. He had already alerted his men, so they would be here soon, but he couldn’t depend on their arrival. He had to get Mina out as soon as possible.

He tucked his gun into the back of his trousers and let Nero lead the way, as he was the one who knew which way to go.

They had almost passed the cabin when Nero frowned and looked around. He pointed at a camouflaged house amid a myriad of trees, with so many leaves on the roof and pretty much every part of the house that they would have run right past.

"Is Mina in there?" He asked, getting himself ready to fire.

"One way to find out." Nero answered, but he sure hoped she was being kept here. At least they would know where she was; getting her out would be easier.

Meanwhile, Mina grabbed the doorknob and tried to struggle with it.

The man on the floor grunted and then laughed. "Did you think I would let you out easily, girlie?"

He writhed around and finally found a way off the floor, pulling the fork from the side of his neck like he was merely swatting a fly. He didn’t seem fazed by the amount of blood he was losing by the second.

Mina’s stomach churned. She had tried to aim for a major artery. That’s why she chose the neck. She knew if she stabbed the right place, he would bleed out in seconds.

It wasn’t that she wanted to kill someone; that thought had never even crossed her mind before today. But how could she let him off when she didn’t know what he was planning to do to her? He might kill her right here and no one would ever know what happened to her.

But the hulking man charged towards her as though she had only scratched him mildly, looking like a raging bull about to trample her for wearing a red cap.

"I..." she froze.

She saw the slap coming from miles away, but she didn’t foresee how hard he would hit her and the impact it would cause. Her ears were ringing by the time her mind cleared up, and her body was a trembling mess.

She eyed a log of wood on the floor and was about to pick it up when he beat her to it.

"You little whore!" He spat, stumbling towards her. She jumped away just in time to evade the log swinging at her, but she lost her footing and fell backwards.

She shuffled off the floor, grabbing the fork he had dropped earlier. She threw it at him, this time aiming for his eyes—and missed.

Her stomach sank. This was it. She was out of weapons. The chair would be great but it was metallic and looked like it had stayed in the same spot for so long that it was starting to grow roots. If she picked it up and failed, she would have given him the best idea to finish her up.

The maniac seemed to think of something. His expression changed into one of triumph as he staggered twards the kitchen.

The first thought that crossed her mind was...knife! He was going to stab her.

She thought she heard movement at the door and rushed over, staying behind it so that whoever was coming in would not see her when he did. She hoped it was someone she knew, here to save her, instead of the lunatic’s minion.

Before she had her answer, she felt herself being lifted off the ground, and the sharp edge of a knife press against her throat just as the door finally opened. Gabe walked in with another man, both pointing their weapons inside the house, but they froze when they saw Mina in her captor’s hold.

"Drop your guns, or say goodbye to your little wife." The man growled.
