Chapter 136: Unforgiven Lies

After being rescued, Lyra underwent a rapid medical check. They were the first to board the arriving helicopter and were taken straight to Mistvale Hospital since Rowan still needed intensive care.

The kidnapping drew the mayor’s attention, prompting a full investigation into the hospital’s upper management.

The inquiry uncovered all of Dr. Carvin’s misdeeds. His negligence and connections to criminal syndicates could no longer be ignored. He was removed from his position and sentenced to prison.

A new director was appointed, and the hospital began the slow process of rebuilding its reputation.

The following day, Monica strode down the corridor toward one of the private wards. Every step radiated controlled elegance, though fury tightened her features.

Her handbag was clutched tightly under her arm as her husband hurried to keep pace, struggling to match her determined stride.

"Honey, don’t be so hard on him. He hasn’t fully recovered yet. Besides, this was part of his strategy."

Albert tried to calm his wife. He understood Rowan’s actions, but Monica was far too emotional to see it that way.

"He really doesn’t care about my feelings." Monica said as the sharp click of her heels rang through the corridor.

She slid the door open and strode straight toward her son.

"Mother—" Rowan barely got the word out before a sharp slap landed on the side of his head.

She jabbed a finger at him, her eyes blazing.

"How could you lie to me? How could you make your own mother cry?"

Her voice trembled as she brought up what had happened outside the operating room, when a nurse had delivered false news. She hadn’t known the truth until this morning.

Rowan sighed. "Mother, if I hadn’t done it that way, how was I supposed to save your daughter-in-law?"

"Don’t use Lyra as an excuse," Monica said, as she took a seat.

"Do you know how shattered my heart was when the doctor said your chances of survival were slim?

And then you were moved to the intensive care unit... they wouldn’t even let me see you. I thought I had already lost you." Monica burst into tears.

Even though Rowan now looked fine, the sorrow still hadn’t left her heart.

Rowan rubbed the back of his head. "Alright. I’m sorry."

"Your apology is too cheap. It can’t heal my broken heart."

He felt helpless—his mother was impossible to comfort once she broke down.

Unsure how to fix the situation, he glanced at his father for support, but Albert only shrugged, offering no help.

"How about I’ll buy you whatever you want?" He made the offer, but Monica shook her head in refusal.

"Your father has already bought me everything."

Rowan raised a brow. "Really? But there must be something even Father can’t buy, right?"

"There’s nothing he can’t—wait...actually, there is one thing."

Her eyes lit up at the thought of the idea. "I have something in mind."

"What is that? Just tell me—I’ll get you one."

"One?" Monica snapped.

"One isn’t enough," she protested.

"Okay, fine. I’ll give you ten. What is it?" Rowan asked.

Ten was a considerable sum, but not beyond him. If it could ease her heart, the cost hardly mattered.

She leaned closer and whispered.

Rowan’s eyes widened. "I can’t."

Monica struck his bandaged arm. "How dare you make an offer and then pull it back right away?"

"That’s—I need permission from the person involved," he said, trying to explain.

"Your father never asked permission when he made me pregnant."

"Ehem," Albert cleared his throat.

"I was wondering how I should ask... if you already get lost in the moment whenever we—"

Albert had just touched on the subject when Rowan cut him off, heat creeping up his neck.

"Please, don’t discuss your marital business here," he interrupted, plugging his ears with his fingers, refusing to listen.

The door slid open, and a soft voice greeted them.

"Well, this is lively. Everyone’s here."

Lyra entered the room and placed the food on the table. It was Meredith’s cooking, brought from home.

Monica rushed forward and pulled her into a hug.

"Oh... thankfully, God was still watching over you."

She pulled back and examined Lyra from head to toe. "Are you feeling better now? You should be resting."

Lyra patted her gently. "I’m fine... The one who’s injured is over there." She pointed toward Rowan.

She opened the container, and handed him the food.

"The doctor said Rowan could be discharged this afternoon, but he needs plenty of rest at home. I should take an extended leave until he’s fully recovered."

"That’s a good chance," Monica said. She grabbed Albert’s hand.

"Rowan, remember my gift," she reminded him, then waved and hummed happily as they walked away. 𝐟𝕣𝗲𝕖𝕨𝗲𝐛𝗻𝗼𝐯𝗲𝚕.𝗰𝚘𝐦

Lyra raised a brow. Monica seemed unusually happy. "What gift did she ask for?"

"Hm? Nothing."

He didn’t dare bring it up yet. He knew Lyra would brush it off. He was still injured and needed to recover first. Then they could plan things carefully.

For a moment, an image flashed through his mind. A little girl or boy with blond hair running toward him.

It looked... nice.

But then the image shifted—crying, sleepless nights, Lyra exhausted after work, having to take care of everything.

A sudden fear crept in. The thought of having a child scared him more than he expected.

"Rowan?"

Lyra waved a hand in front of him.

"You look like you’re miles away. Want some more?"

"I’m good."

She took the empty food container from his hands, set it on the table, then opened her own to eat.

"You haven’t eaten?" Rowan asked. If he’d known earlier, he would have waited and eaten together.

Lyra shook her head. "I woke up and came straight here."

Rowan sighed softly. He knew his wife had almost no time for herself.

If they were going to have children, she would have to rearrange her schedule—find a balance between family and work.

The thought troubled him. Lyra should quit her job and just relax at home. But was she willing to sacrifice her career?
