Chapter 88: Riana Mission 3

(Third Person POV)

Atop the wall, several people were gathered, staring at the monsters that were rapidly approaching the city.

Doom! Doom! Doom!

The ground trembled violently, as if an earthquake had struck, due to the sheer number of monsters.

"Zack! Go to Baron Elin immediately and tell him to prepare all the soldiers he can and bring them here."

Riana took a deep breath and turned her head to the side, where Zack stood, and said those words to him.

"Understood."

Zack nodded, leapt off the wall, and rushed toward the Elin family estate.

"Marcus, you’ll be in charge of organizing everyone once the soldiers arrive. For now, I want you to stay on the wall and stop any monster from getting through."

Marcus nodded and drew several firearms from the ring on his right hand.

"Alex, Zaria, you’re with me. We’ll face the monsters head-on and try to stall them until reinforcements arrive. Understood?"

"Understood."

Riana fixed her gaze on the monsters and took a deep breath before stepping forward and leaping off the wall.

Alex and Zaria followed her, jumping down to the side where the monsters were approaching.

Riana pulled her sword from the ring on her left hand and gripped it tightly.

An orange aura began to form around her, enveloping both her and the sword completely.

"Don’t let a single monster get past you, or I’ll kill you myself."

BOOOOSH!

The ground beneath her cracked, and she vanished instantly, reappearing close to the oncoming horde.

Alex and Zaria also drew their weapons, surrounded themselves in aura, and charged at the monsters to engage them in battle.

In contrast to the heated atmosphere there, just a few miles away from the wall—

There lay the forest from which the monsters had come.

In a spot slightly off the monsters’ path, smoke was rising from a campfire.

Two people sat near the fire, seemingly unconcerned about the swarm headed for the city.

"Why did we do this, Your Majesty?"

Elena spoke while sitting near the fire, feeling its heat.

"What do you mean?"

Orlax tilted his head in confusion at her question, flipping a large piece of meat over the flames.

"I mean... you knew killing the Nartic Bear would attract all the monsters, and yet you still killed it right in front of the city, directly causing this monster wave."

Elena closed her eyes, recalling what they had done earlier when they shot the bear and lured it toward the city.

The Nartic Bear was a unique creature, a beast whose blood had a special trait that attracted all monsters.

And if the blood was spilled in large amounts, it would drive the monsters into a frenzy, creating a monster wave.

"Oh, you meant that."

Orlax nodded and looked over to where Elena sat.

"Well, you could consider it a little test."

While the two of them spoke, a white wolf watched them cautiously from behind the trees, seemingly preparing to attack.

When it saw neither of them paying attention, it lunged at Orlax with sharp claws.

But suddenly, the wolf stopped in midair, as if suspended by an invisible force, flailing its claws in panic.

Awoooo!

Orlax and Elena continued ignoring the levitating wolf as if it didn’t exist.

"A test?"

"Yes, a test. A test to see if Riana truly deserves to be an empress."

Awooo! Awooo!

The wolf howled in pain, blood gushing from its mouth, until it stopped moving and fell to the ground.

Back at the battlefield, Riana and her companions continued fighting the monsters non-stop.

Although the monsters weren’t individually powerful, their overwhelming numbers made it difficult for the trio to conserve their energy.

Surrounded on all sides, a single mistake or moment of distraction could cost them their lives.

Now, the three had retreated back to the wall to catch their breath for a moment.

"This is so annoying. No matter how many I kill, their numbers don’t seem to decrease at all,"

Zaria said, resting her spear on the ground and leaning on it.

"Let’s hold out until reinforcements arrive. Don’t drop your guard,"

Riana replied.

She was the first to move again, swinging her sword toward the monsters.

Swoooosh!

Each swing brought down more monsters, painting the battlefield with blood.

Due to Riana’s brutal, raw combat style, the monsters began to grow wary of her and surrounded her in a circle.

"Hehe, looks like you’ve got some brains after all."

Riana didn’t care and stood her ground, waiting for the attack.

"Raaaargh!"

Suddenly, a monster leapt at her from behind, aiming for her neck.

"That won’t work."

Before it could reach her, Riana grabbed it by the neck with her left hand and hurled it into the horde, knocking many of them down.

"Don’t just stand there watching! Come at me, all of you, you bastards!"

Her orange aura grew darker as she screamed at the monsters, a wide grin showing how thrilled she was.

Swoosh! Swoosh!

Two golden slashes appeared out of nowhere, flying horizontally toward the monsters.

Doom! Doom! Doom!

Wherever the golden lines passed, monsters were sliced apart and fell to the ground.

Phew!

Alex exhaled the breath he had been holding, golden particles rising from his sword.

"That’s terrifying! How can you keep doing that over and over?"

Beside him, Zaria leaned on her spear, shivering as she looked at the corpses scattered around.

"I can’t keep this up forever. I need time to launch more attacks like that."

"Still, it’s impressive."

Zaria lifted her spear off the ground, spun it slightly, then gripped it with both hands and charged the monsters.

Boom! Boom! Boom!

Each time her spear struck, it made a deafening sound.

Her speed was so fast that her spear couldn’t even be seen—three strikes per second.

DOOOOM! DOOOOM!

Suddenly, the ground shook violently, causing Zaria to stumble.

"What the...?"

Riana froze and turned to look toward the forest, where the sound of heavy footsteps approached.

DOOOM! DOOOM!

Her eyes widened as she saw what was causing the tremors.

From the forest emerged a creature—no, this couldn’t be called just a monster.

Standing over ten meters tall, with a massive body.

It stood upright like a human, with four legs.

Its upper body had eight massive arms, its skin pitch black and oozing a disgusting green substance.

Shhhh!

As the green liquid hit the ground, the earth beneath it began to melt rapidly.

This creature had surpassed the realm of monsters—the only word that fit was "demon."

On either side of it were two slightly smaller monsters, but clearly of the same type.

"Damn it! As if things couldn’t get worse!"

Riana gritted her teeth, tightening her grip on her sword as she looked up at the creature.

"A sixth-rank monster... Forest Demon. It’s a rare type of sixth-rank beast."

At the forest’s edge, Orlax and Elena stood at a distance, watching the demon approach the city.

"This is a bit dangerous. Are we just going to keep watching?"

"I already told her—I won’t interfere in her mission at all."

Orlax leaned against a tree, hands in his pockets.

"Are you sure she’ll be okay?"

Orlax stayed silent for a moment, pondering Elena’s question, before looking back at Riana, who now faced the Forest Demon.

"No. I don’t know if she’ll be okay."

"Then...?"

"But even if her life is in danger, I won’t step in."

Orlax walked deeper into the forest, with Elena following.

"I thought you loved Riana. I guess I was wrong."

"Hmm? What are you saying? I do love Riana. But she has to overcome this trial on her own. She already has what it takes to win."

"Then why put her in such danger?"

"Elena, Riana is different. She’s the Empress. She shouldn’t be the one protected—she should be the one doing the protecting."

Elena looked at his back and sighed in resignation.

"Look at you acting all nervous while saying that."

"Is it that obvious?"

"Yes."

A faint smile appeared on both their faces as they continued deeper into the forest.

Back on the battlefield, Riana stared nervously at the monster before her.

"Damn it! Damn it!"

Her body trembled; her fear was evident in her stance.

"Calm down, Riana!"

the Sword Spirit tried to ease her, but her mind was already elsewhere.

"HAAAAAAH!"

"Charge!"

"Let’s help Lady Riana!"

Suddenly, the voices of many people echoed behind her, causing Riana to glance back.

At the gate, now wide open, dozens of people poured out, weapons in hand, rushing toward the battlefield.

Despite the massive number of monsters and the terrifying demon, their fighting spirit blazed as they charged with courage.

Riana stood stunned for a moment, her mouth slightly open in disbelief.

"Hahaha, how ridiculous. Was I actually worried about these people? Haha, I guess there was no need to be concerned."

She turned her gaze to the three monsters before her, especially the largest one.

"Now let me show you who the great Riana truly is, you bastard."
