The Twisted Obsession-Chapter 289: The truth
Chapter 289: The truth
The front door opened, and Remo stepped inside. He looked tense, his eyes scanning the room before they landed on her. Abby forced a smile, but it quickly faded when she saw the seriousness in his gaze.
"Hey," she greeted him, trying to sound casual. "How did it go?"
Remo didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he walked over and sat down beside her, taking her hands in his. The warmth of his touch contrasted sharply with the cold dread pooling in her stomach.
"We need to talk, Abby," he said softly, his voice tinged with a mix of concern and something else—something that sent a chill down her spine.
"What’s wrong?" she asked, her voice trembling.
"I went to see Nicole," Remo began, his eyes searching hers. "She showed me something. Something about your past."
Abby’s heart skipped a beat, and she felt her hands start to shake. "What did she show you?"
"She showed me documents from a psychiatric hospital," Remo said, his grip on her hands tightening slightly. "About an incident where you... where you killed an inmate."
Abby’s world seemed to tilt on its axis. She pulled her hands away, wrapping her arms around herself defensively. "Remo, I..."
"Why didn’t you tell me?" he asked, his voice breaking slightly. "I thought we didn’t keep secrets from each other."
Abby’s eyes filled with tears, and she looked away, unable to meet his gaze. "I was afraid. I didn’t want you to see me differently. To see the monster that everyone else saw."
"Abby, please," Remo said gently, reaching out to touch her shoulder. "I need to understand what happened. Please, tell me."
She shook her head, the words sticking in her throat. How could she explain? How could she make him understand without him hating her?
"I was broken, Remo," she began, her voice trembling. "After the severe bullying I had in school, they said I was unstable. My dad thought sending me to that hospital would help, but it only made things worse."
Abby took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "The bullying didn’t stop there. The other patients, the staff... they all pushed me to my limits. There was one woman, an inmate, who was particularly cruel. She... she said terrible things. She knew exactly how to get under my skin."
The memories flooded back, and Abby felt herself sinking into the darkness of that time. "The only thing that kept me sane was a letter. A letter from Izzy. My dad brought it to me one day, and it was about you, Remo."
She looked up, meeting his eyes for the first time since she started talking. "I became obsessed with you. Izzy’s words painted this picture of you—strong, protective, loving. I wanted that. I wanted you. Even though I knew it was wrong because you were Izzy’s boyfriend, I couldn’t help myself. I daydreamed about you, about a love like that."
Remo’s expression softened, but there was still a tension in his eyes. "You were obsessed with me before we even met?" he asked, his voice laced with shock.
Abby nodded, guilt washing over her. "Yes. I know it sounds crazy, but I couldn’t help it. I wanted to be with you. To have a love like the one Izzy described."
"So you intentionally approached me?" Remo asked in disbelief, his face contorted with confusion and hurt.
Abby’s heart sank. She tried to defend herself, to explain, but the guilt was too heavy. "I didn’t mean to deceive you. But yes, I did. I thought that if I could just be near you, everything would be okay."
Remo raked his hands through his hair, his expression a mix of anger and disbelief. "Izabella’s death... did you—" He stopped himself, his eyes searching hers for an answer.
Abby’s eyes widened, hurt glinting in her eyes. How could he—did he think she was such a monster? "Of course not! She was my best friend. I would never—" Her voice broke, and she shook her head vehemently. "I loved Izzy. I would never hurt her."
Remo’s shoulders sagged with relief, and he let out a long breath. "I’m sorry, Abby. I just had to ask. This is a lot to take in."
Abby’s tears flowed freely now, a mix of relief and sorrow. "I understand. I know it looks bad, but I swear, Remo, I never wanted to hurt anyone. The hospital... it was a nightmare. The bullying never stopped, even there."
Remo moved closer, wrapping his arms around her. "Tell me what happened, Abby. I need to know everything."
She took a deep breath, trying to steady herself. "The inmate, she found out about the letter. She taunted me, said she was going to steal you away. She said terrible things about you and me. She pushed and pushed until I snapped."
Abby’s breathing became erratic, and she felt tears streaming down her face. "I didn’t mean to kill her, Remo. But in that moment, I was consumed by jealousy and rage. I couldn’t control myself. I saw red, and the next thing I knew, she was dead."
She broke down, sobbing uncontrollably. "I’m so sorry, Remo. I never wanted you to find out like this. I’m a horrible person. I don’t deserve you."
Remo pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly as she cried. "You’re not a monster, Abby. You were pushed to your breaking point. You’ve come so far since then. We’ll get through this together."
Abby clung to him, her body shaking with the force of her sobs. "I was so scared you’d leave me. That you’d hate me if you knew the truth."
"I could never hate you," Remo said softly, stroking her hair. "You’re my wife, and I love you. We’ll face this together, one step at a time."
For a long time, they just sat there, wrapped in each other’s arms. Abby’s sobs eventually subsided, replaced by a weary silence. She felt drained, both physically and emotionally, but Remo’s presence was a comforting anchor.
"Thank you for telling me," Remo said after a while. "I know it wasn’t easy."
"I should have told you sooner," Abby whispered. "But I was so afraid."
