Chapter 267: How long
Lily’s hands trembled as she dialed Cage’s number. The phone rang twice before he picked up.
"Hey, Lily," Cage’s voice came through the line, deep and steady. "What’s up?" freeweɓnovel~cѳm
"Cage, I need to talk to you," Lily said, her voice cracking. She glanced around her dimly lit living room, feeling a gnawing sense of dread. "It’s about Alex. I think he knows."
"What do you mean?" Cage’s tone sharpened with concern.
Before Lily could respond, the sound of breaking glass echoed through her apartment. Her heart lurched into her throat. She spun around, her eyes wide with fear as she saw Alex standing in the doorway, a wild, paranoid gleam in his eyes.
"Alex!" she gasped, dropping the phone.
"Lily, what’s going on?" Cage’s voice crackled from the phone, but Lily was too focused on the immediate danger in front of her.
Alex stalked toward her, his face twisted with rage. "You fucking bitch—you were fucking Cage? When was that?!" he demanded, his voice shaking with fury.
Lily’s eyes widened with terror. She took a step back, but Alex closed the distance in an instant. His laughter was cold and unhinged, sending shivers down her spine.
"You know, you started behaving weird, so I kept tabs on you," he said, his voice dripping with venom. "You dare even give me sleeping pills?! You—" He lunged forward, grabbing her neck with one hand.
Lily struggled, her hands clawing at his arm. "Please, Alex, stop!" she gasped, her voice barely a whisper as her vision started to blur.
"How long have you been fucking my brother, huh?" Alex tightened his grip, his face inches from hers. Lily could smell the alcohol on his breath, could see the madness in his eyes. Her legs gave out, and she sank to the floor, still desperately trying to free herself from his grasp.
Cage’s voice, panicked and urgent, was a faint echo from the fallen phone. "Lily! Lily, what’s happening? Answer me!"
"Alex, please," Lily begged, tears streaming down her face. "You’re hurting me."
With a growl of frustration, Alex released her, throwing her to the floor. Lily landed hard, the impact knocking the breath out of her. She scrambled backward, her body trembling, her eyes never leaving Alex.
"Where’s the document you stole from me?" Alex demanded, advancing on her again. Lily’s mind raced, trying to think of a way out, a way to stall him.
"I don’t know what you’re talking about," she said, her voice shaking. "Please, Alex, just let me go."
Alex kicked a nearby chair, sending it crashing into the wall. "Don’t lie to me, Lily!" he shouted, his voice a terrifying roar. "I know you took it. Where is it?"
Lily’s heart pounded in her chest. She glanced around the room, looking for anything she could use to defend herself, but there was nothing within reach. She was trapped.
"Cage knows where it is," she blurted out, hoping to buy herself some time. "He has it. Just let me call him, and we can figure this out."
Alex’s eyes narrowed. "You think I’m stupid?" he snarled. "I’m not letting you talk to him. You’re going to tell me where it is, or I’ll make you wish you had."
Lily’s breath hitched. She could see the resolve in Alex’s eyes, the unwavering determination. She knew he wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted, and she was terrified of what he might do next.
Desperation clawed at her as she tried to think of a way to escape. Her gaze flickered to the phone, lying just a few feet away. Cage was still on the line; he had to be hearing all of this.
"Please, Alex," she said, her voice barely more than a whisper. "I don’t have it. Just let me go."
Alex knelt down, his face inches from hers. "You’re lying," he hissed, his hand shooting out to grab her hair, yanking her head back painfully. "You’re going to tell me where that document is, or I swear to God, you’ll regret it."
Lily’s vision blurred with tears. She felt utterly helpless, the weight of Alex’s rage bearing down on her. She had to find a way to stall him, to give Cage enough time to do something, anything.
"I’ll tell you," she sobbed, her voice cracking. "Just please, don’t hurt me anymore."
Alex’s grip on her hair loosened slightly, but his eyes remained cold and unforgiving. "Talk," he ordered.
Lily took a shaky breath, her mind racing. "Cage... he has it," she said again, trying to keep her voice steady. "He said he would meet me tonight to give it back. It’s at his place."
Alex’s eyes bored into hers, searching for any sign of deceit. After what felt like an eternity, he released her hair and stood up.
"You’d better be telling the truth," he warned, his voice low and dangerous. "Because if you’re not, I will find out, and you’ll pay for it."
Lily nodded, her entire body shaking with fear and relief. "I’m not lying, Alex. I swear."
Alex glanced at the phone, still lying on the floor. He kicked it toward her. "Call him," he commanded. "And don’t try anything stupid."
Lily picked up the phone with trembling hands. "Cage," she said, her voice trembling. "He’s coming for you. Get the document."
Cage’s voice was tense. "I heard everything, Lily. Hang in there. I’m almost there. Delay him a little."
Alex’s eyes gleamed with satisfaction as he watched her. "Good. Now, get up. We’re going to pay my brother a visit."
Lily’s heart sank. She knew this wasn’t over, not by a long shot. But for now, all she could do was follow Alex’s orders and hope that Cage would be able to help them both get out of this alive.
Lily’s heart pounded as Alex yanked her by the hair, dragging her toward the door. She stumbled, trying to delay him. "Wait, Alex, please! We can talk about this. You don’t have to do this."
"Shut up, Lily!" Alex snarled, his grip tightening painfully. "I’ve had enough of your lies."
They were almost at the door when the sound of footsteps pounded up the stairs. The door burst open, and Cage charged in, his eyes blazing with fury. "Get your hands off her!" he bellowed, slamming his fist into Alex’s face.
