The Trending Topic Herself: The Villainess is the Superstar!-Chapter 239: Resolving the Crisis
Serena Sawyer held her breath, as the scene before her eyes was quite different from what she had imagined.
Facing four thugs armed with clubs, Maya Monroe remained calm and composed, with beads of sweat on her forehead, yet her eyes flashed with a fierce light.
One person fell to his knees with a thud, his chubby cheeks resembling ripe red pig liver, clutching his chest in pain without recovering for a long time.
Serena, holding her bag, was at a loss for what to do. She hadn’t expected Maya to have such good martial arts skills. Just watching those clubs swinging around made her extremely nervous.
One person was knocked down again, totally unprepared to encounter Maya, their nemesis. He roared in anger, recklessly swinging his club toward Maya.
The other three also scrambled to their feet. Seemingly influenced by the others, they tightened their grip on their clubs.
Serena shouted in surprise, taking a few steps forward and pulling Maya aside to evade.
Maya glanced at Serena out of the corner of her eye.
The assailant missed but did not give up.
The iron club hovered just above her head, as if it could strike down any second, unavoidable. She was so nervous she grit her teeth, "Maya, watch out!"
Maya deftly pulled Serena aside and kicked out viciously, this time targeting the opponent’s vulnerable elbow.
"Ah!!" The man screamed in pain, dropping the club to the ground with a dull thud.
Maya quickly pushed Serena back, "Serena, don’t worry about me. Those iron clubs hurt a lot if they hit you, so keep your distance from me!"
Though worried, Serena knew she would hinder Maya’s performance, negatively affecting her ability to fight. Serena could only retreat, but her worried gaze remained fixed on Maya.
Enemies appeared one after another like an endless batch of leeks, and Maya gradually began to find herself a bit powerless.
She had been slacking off too much recently, and her life-saving skills were no longer as smooth as before. Not to mention, her stamina was nowhere near her peak levels.
So when facing four weapon-wielding practitioners, it was impossible for her not to struggle.
A prolonged fight was definitely unsustainable; she estimated she’d collapse before they would.
Maya gripped the iron club she had just snatched tightly in her right hand, with the best strategy being a swift and decisive battle.
Serena shouted for help loudly, even though this underground garage might already be controlled by others, she still didn’t want to sit idly by and await her fate.
Maya swung the iron club at one man’s thigh, controlling her strength to restrain their movement rather than causing serious injury.
After all, this was a world of law where actions were restrained. The old methods of "achieving ends by any means" couldn’t be used here.
Maya hadn’t wanted to use a weapon as damaging as an iron club because if she couldn’t control herself properly, she wouldn’t gain anything from it. After all, she was a celebrity who easily hit the headlines. But if she didn’t quickly resolve the situation, the consequences would be unimaginable. Maya knew her physical condition well enough to know that she couldn’t outlast these professional fighters with just her fists alone.
The only reasons she’d held on were her accumulated skills and exceptional sense perception.
Hearing Serena’s scream, Maya glanced sideways, her gaze sharpening.
"Maya!!"
Maya kicked out and then shook her head at Serena, "I’m fine, it just grazed past me."
Seeing Maya’s fair arm still smooth and unscathed, Serena finally relaxed completely.
The moment the iron club swung toward Maya’s arm, she felt her heart nearly stop.
The weight of such a weapon striking an arm could have unimaginable consequences.
Meanwhile, police sirens sounded, approaching from afar.
"Don’t move!!"
Police armed with guns quickly controlled the scene.
Maya felt the warmth of Serena’s hand and quietly breathed a sigh of relief.
Luckily the police arrived in time, otherwise she really couldn’t have lasted much longer.
It seemed she needed to pick up the life-saving skills she had let go of. Clearly, in such a peaceful world, how come she still encountered so much murder and kidnapping?
A female officer with gentle eyes approached them to understand what had happened.
Maya explained everything.
Serena was still holding tightly onto Maya’s hand; Maya could feel the dampness in Serena’s palm.
Serena’s emotions had yet to fully settle, and she stayed close to Maya. After that recent crisis, she’d come to rely entirely on and trust Maya.
It was already 8 PM by the time they finished giving their statements at the police station, and it was pitch dark outside.
Serena’s family’s driver came to pick her up and took Maya along as well.
Maya originally intended to refuse, but at this time of night, contacting Ian Rowe or Ryan Spencer would inevitably involve some explanations.
And Maya hated trouble the most.
Maya sat down next to Serena, who sighed for a long time.
"Maya, thank you so much for earlier. Without you, I really wouldn’t have known what to do. It’s my first time experiencing something like that... I..."
Maya withdrew her gaze from outside the window and looked at Serena soothingly, "It’s all over. Plus, didn’t you treat me to a lot of delicious food? You even gave me cookies you baked yourself."
Serena looked over, puzzled.
"You gave me so much good food because you think of me as a friend."
"I feel the same way, and it’s normal for friends to help each other."
Maya’s expression was serious and earnest. Serena first laughed but then felt her eyes grow moist.
She nodded repeatedly, "You’re right, I’m so touched..."
Maya suddenly became serious and reminded, "This incident was planned."
Serena was first startled, then her expression grew complicated, "Indeed, this was premeditated. Whether it was the aquarium delay or the sealed underground garage, it was all calculated."
Maya nodded.
Serena sighed, "This was aimed at me, it really implicated..."
Seeming to realize something, she paused.
"In any case, their target was me."
Maya thought for a moment, "There must be someone behind them, and judging by their equipment and methods, the mastermind doesn’t seem to have intended any real harm. Their goal should be to teach you a lesson."
"Think back, is there anyone you’ve fallen out with?"
Whatever possibility Serena considered, her expression darkened.
Maya didn’t rush or question her.
After a while, Serena said, "I need to investigate this."
Just within the past few hours, Maya’s messages overflowed. She skimmed some messages and casually replied to a few but did not mention the recent events. The matter was resolved, so sharing it would only further aggravate.
