Chapter 37: Ch 37: Drunken Mistake - Part 1

"Shhh. I can’t hear you. If I can’t hear you, then I don’t have to follow what you say. You won’t leave me."

Theo spoke and I heard the loud noise of something crashing. The world around me was swaying, but I could not tell if it was because of Theo or because of the heavy pheromones surrounding me.

’I need to do something or I will lose consciousness. Darn-! I really did not want to play dirty. But it looks like I don’t have a choice in this matter.’

I took in a deep breath to calm myself before I let out my pheromones. They collided with Theo’s before they passed the alpha pheromones and reached Theo himself.

The effect was immediate and Theo’s body sagged in relief.

"Theo, listen to me. I am not abandoning you... nor am I getting rid of you or going away. I am only talking about what-if scenarios. Don’t react so strongly. I am still here for you."

I reminded Theo and only then did he relax.

"Y-You are not going away? Really? You are not leaving me? I... thank god..."

Finally, Theo controlled his pheromones and the heavy feeling went away. I could breathe normally once more.

Theo looked shaken and also sleepy.

"Let’s get you back to your room now, Theo. You need a good night’s sleep. Don’t worry. I will be there to meet you in the morning."

I promised him before I took him to his room. This time, there was not much protest.

When I walked back to my room, I noticed that some of the paintings on the walls had fallen and their glass had cracked as a result.

I decided not to touch them and returned to my room.

My body felt tired but my mind was too alert. I recalled the detail of the news I saw on T.V. regarding monsters with Jun’s face and then what happened with Theo.

It was clear that both were not normal incidents but I had a feeling that I wouldn’t get an answer unless I was willing to jump back into the hunter’s world.

’But would that be the right thing to do? I wanted to live a normal life. But if I step back into the hunter’s world, all I’ve worked hard for would be gone.’

That was a concern of mine and a big one at that.

I had worked hard to build up my current life and it finally seemed like things were on track toward a normal life.

And then, this happened.

It felt almost deliberate, almost as if someone knew who I was and wanted to lure me out. And it was working.

Doubt began to creep up inside my mind and the part of me that mourned for my teammates and friends asked me if I was truly going to not investigate this.

I had been a hunter all my life, so my instincts agreed with that side as well and told me to return.

But the Kyle of today did not want to return to the past self and the Kyle of the past did not want to disappear.

"Ugh, this is not helping. I need to clear my mind and drink something. Where did I put that can of juice."

I picked up a can from my drawer, not looking deeply at what I was picking up. So, I did not notice that I took a huge sip of strong alcohol when I needed to drink juice.

’Ugh, bitter-! What the—’

I meant to spit the alcohol out but in my sudden shock, I ended up swallowing it.

There was a sudden boost of energy in my system and I felt much more awake and refreshed. I looked at the system that was mocking me with the screen asking me to ’activate’ my account as Ace.

"Tsk, what’s so special about this? I don’t even know what I am afraid of. All the information I need is likely in the hunter’s database. I just need to connect for a minute and then disconnect. It will be an easy thing to do."

The alcohol made my head much clearer, but I did not drink much.

I tried to recall why I did not drink often since I knew there was a reason. But no matter how much I tried to recall, I could not do that. Nothing came to mind but my desire for answers.

"Ugh, who cares about the consequences! Those are for the weak. And it’s not like I am drunk or anything. I am making a conscious decision here."

I was sure about what I was doing, so I pressed the activate button.

Millions of pop-ups showed on my screen and the system gave an error message.

[Welcome back... ???]

With that final message, the system screen went blank and stopped progressing. The only words on the screen were updating and the progress percent.

"What the hell—where are my answers? Where did everything go? The inventory... hello?"

I asked, now surprised at the sudden onslaught of messages I got.

It felt overwhelming but annoying at the same time. But what ticked me off even more was the fact that I could not get any answers from it.

"Fuck! Fine-! Be a bitch to me. See if I care. I am going to sleep now."

I closed my eyes and decided to tune the world out. After all, there was nothing else I could do anyway.

Little did I know that my small action would cause the world around me to crash and burn from my small decision.

The system updated in real time and the news of what happened spread within a few minutes. Everyone opened the system to check if this was true or not.

"What the—"

"It’s real! Ace has returned. But how? And when?" 𝚏𝗿𝗲𝐞𝐰𝚎𝕓𝐧𝚘𝘃𝗲𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝕞

There was chaos, and among this, the ones who were the most shocked were the hunter’s association.

"Ace is back-? How? Where is he? Why didn’t he contact us as soon as possible? What about the others? Are they back as well?"

An executive asked, now panicking.

"Forget about that. What do we do about his assets? We distributed most of it among ourselves in the name of donation because we were sure he wouldn’t be back-! What if he asks for it back? Won’t we be in trouble?"

Another executive asked in a panicked voice.

Ultimately, the old chairman sitting at the head of the table smacked his stick against the ground and everyone paid attention to him.

"Don’t be so worried about Ace. He was just a kid dependent on us when he went into that final dungeon. If he came out now, then he won’t know any better either. What we need to do is get to him before anyone else does and convince him that we’re the best people to look after him."

The old man said and everyone suddenly looked calmer. The chairman continued once he had everyone’s attention.

"Make sure to bring Ace under the association once more. He always belonged to us and he always will be. And this time, we can get him bonded to one of our alpha hunters to assure he won’t be able to leave us."
