The Strangers - Across the Silent Heartbeat-Chapter 21: A Heartfelt Introduction
Chapter 21: A Heartfelt Introduction
The following days became the days of renewed closeness and understanding between the two. Both had become emotionally attached to each other; that pacifying factor was, of course again, her commitment to be with him through this entire struggle. It had taken their relationship further, given in his heart an element of peace in Arjun's heart.
That moment, which he most dreaded, it had come—he had to introduce Ayesha to his parents. It was an exciting thought, but of course, it made him a little nervous; in one moment, he realized the importance of the moment. He wanted it all to go well.
One sunny afternoon, Arjun and Ayesha were standing outside Arjun's family home. That kameez did wonders to grace Ayesha, making her look full of excitement but a little on the nervous side. Seeing her in unease, Arjun took her hand in his and gave it a light squeeze.
"Don't worry, Ayesha," he said and smiled at her. "My parents are going to love you.".
Ayesha nodded her head as the heart thumped in her chest and pumped into her ears. "I hope so, Arjun. I really want to impress them."

They walked up to the front door, and Arjun rang the bell. Just then, the door opened, and in front of them stood Sita, Arjun's mother, flashing a brilliant smile. Indeed, her eyes did light up upon seeing her son; indeed, an example of living human beauty was standing beside him.
"Arjun! Ayesha! Do come in, do come in!" She ushered them indoors. "We've been really wanting to see you, Ayesha."
The warm welcome, inviting home—she felt enveloped inside, like a warm blanket soothing the grating of her nerves. The insides spoke of homeliness with family photos in various poses and mementos that reeked of love and togetherness, to make one feel that one belonged while taking in one's surroundings.
Sita escorted them to the huge lounge; Arjun's father, Ravi, rose to his feet and cast a soft, gentle smile while extending his hand toward Ayesha. "Good to finally meet you, Ayesha. Arjun has told us much about you."
Ayesha shook it with a warm smile that radiated all over her face. "Same to you both, Mr. and Mrs. Sharma. Thanks for putting me up."
Sita came out with a tray of tea and refreshments, and they sat on these comfortable leather sofas. There was so much warmth in the air, and hospitality abounded, that Ayesha easily warmed up to it. They chatted about other things: what everybody loved doing, families, and experiences. It was a very real interest in getting to know her that Sita and Ravi showed, and openness that warmed her from introverted shyness.
Gradually, Arjun felt that he now needs to break his news to his parents. With thumping sounds in the ears, he said, "Mom, Dad, there's something important I want to tell you."
Sita and Ravi looked into each other's eyes; theirs were all on their son. "What is it, Arjun?" Ravi asked.
Ayesha turned toward Arjun and was supporting him, nodding encouragement. He turned back toward his parents with much effort and took a deep breath. "Ayesha and I are in love with each other. We have fought this much but we will always be there for each other. That is why I wanted you to know; your approval means everything to us.".
The room went quiet, with Sita and Ravi grappling with the news. Quite imperceptibly, a broad beaming smile blossomed on Sita's face. "Arjun, how nice! Both of us have been noticing how much cheerier you have become since Ayesha has come into your life. We can't be happier for both of you."
To this, Ravi smiled in approval. "You have our blessings, son. Ayesha, welcome to the family."
Ayesha's eyes became teary with delight, and she had been so fretful about this moment; now, beyond words, all that she could feel was relief and joy. She extended her hands and took Sita's in her own. "Thank you so much, Mrs. Sharma. Your acceptance means everything to me."
Sita squeezed her hand gently. "Call me Sita, dear; you're family now.
He felt elated, thankful, and his last thought had given way to it all of a sudden. It was everything he had ever dreamt it to be and so much more at the same time. His eyes met Ayesha's, beams of felicity, and he knew that he would carry that one moment along with him forever.
Well, this evening went on to be of laughter, stories, and sharing. Sita and Ravi shared many stories related to Arjun's childhood, and Ayesha chuckled, feeling more a part of the family. The tender gazes between Arjun and Ayesha were joyful and full of love.
It is then in that time of the evening when things start to become rather late that Sita and Ravi hugged Ayesha, and that sealed finally her acceptance and love. The room was filled with satisfaction and elation as Arjun and Ayesha left the house with approval and good wishes from his family.
They walked back to campus, holding hands. Stars sprinkled across the sky, much like the twinkle in their eyes. Arjun put his arm across Ayesha's shoulders.
"Thanks for being there with me today, Ayesha," he whispered. "This means so much to me."
She rested her head on his shoulder, and he drew her close, hugging her right. "Thank you, Arjun, for everything. Today is unforgettable. I am so happy to be a part of your family."
They walked ahead, silent; still, each other's hearts were filled with no less love than with an overshadowing sense of thankfulness. It was a step up in life, but the actual sense of it had bonded and brought them much closer.
Arjun and Ayesha walked hand in hand into the starry night, fearless of whatever lay ahead in life.
