It was now midnight, and Neraxis had been sitting in a bush for the last four hours.

However, his boredom was overshadowed by the fact that there were so many monarchs around. Read latest chapters at novelbuddy

Even if their moniker did not mean much—since their strength wasn’t great—their numbers more than made up for the difference.

Now, it was finally time for him to make a move as well.

There was a batch of nine people heading into the forest, and another two right behind them.

Since there was no particular pattern, Neraxis decided to go right behind the two people, calmly walking forward.

It’s a pity I don’t have the device that changes my hair color—would really be useful, he remarked inwardly, but it was his own fault for rushing to go sooner.

If he had asked, Amara would have likely given him what he wanted.

Nonetheless, aside from the occasional strange looks he got from the other monarchs, Neraxis fit in like the rest, until, eventually, he arrived at the fire.

The fire was a bit different from what he had been expecting since, instead of wood, it was fueled by animals.

Gazelles, birds, snakes, and other types of animals were scattered around the bonfire.

They all had one thing in common—they were something a hyena would eat, a diet of sorts.

Are they trying to summon it? But... it doesn’t make sense. That thing is not an animal by any means. Neraxis recalled its humanoid appearance.

He wandered around, spotting both normal people as well as the monarchs talking to each other.

Some were even being converted, as spare white hyena-symbol jackets were scattered across the wooden logs, which the monarchs handed to the normal people.

Neraxis also spotted the pair he had seen back at the inn—the same ones who had blabbered about this gathering in the first place—and now, both of them had been converted into monarchs.

What a foul gathering... Neraxis thought with repulsion as he suddenly bumped into someone, knocking them over.

"Sorry, I was—" He stretched his hand out, about to apologize.

But the sight of who he had knocked down startled him.

"You think you can just run away from me, bastard? Two can play that game," the elf said with a sly grin and jumped back to her feet before shouting, "Everyone! This gu—! Huph...!"

Neraxis covered her mouth and began dragging her into the forest, leaving the surrounding people and monarchs confused.

However, no one tried stopping them, merely ignoring the act as if it was common.

Which, in the end, worked out in Neraxis’s favor as he got pretty far away and threw her onto the ground before summoning his sword.

"Why do you keep meddling with my plans? Can’t you just back off? I’ve given you two chances now, yet you keep on coming," he complained as she dashed backward and pulled out her bow, nocking an arrow.

"You tied me up! You threw me into a dumpster! Why do you think I’m following you, huh!?" Her yell traveled like an echo across the forest.

Neraxis facepalmed. "Who shot an arrow at me first? Twice, actually. I just did what I had to do to defend myself."

"Is that right?" she scoffed and released her string, making the arrow fly toward him.

But before it could make contact with Neraxis, he slashed it in two, the tips going in separate directions.

"I’m warning you for the last time," he said coldly. "If you don’t back off, I won’t hesitate to kill you."

"Try it! I’m not letting my guard down like before!" she replied and suddenly twisted her body, avoiding Neraxis’s sword, which nearly pierced straight through her heart.

However, that wasn’t what he was truly aiming for, as he predicted her to dodge.

Therefore, Neraxis successfully struck her quiver, making the majority of arrows fall onto the ground.

Before she could bend down to pick them up, he kicked them all to the side and brought down his sword, preparing to sever her head.

But a sudden glimmer of light off in the distance startled him, making Neraxis instinctively take a step back.

As he did, a ballista arrow flew by where he had stood, making his eyes widen.

"...Did you do that?" Neraxis asked, but she had an equally puzzled look.

"No... my traps are a bit further away. That’s not mine," she remarked, making his brows twitch.

He cautiously looked toward where the ballista arrow had come from, and what met his eyes was a row of white-jacketed individuals loading more ballista arrows.

"Fu—" Neraxis was about to exclaim, but his senses went off, causing him to lean to the side.

Once he did, another ballista arrow flew by, making a hole in the tree in front of him, as well as several other trees in its path.

"Hey, edgy white-haired imposter dude—"

"Neraxis," he corrected the elf.

"Neraxis, right. I’m Eris. I think we should team up for now," she suggested, and he swiftly agreed.

"I agree, but don’t try anything funny, or I’ll kill you before I kill them," Neraxis threatened and turned toward the monarchs.

From what he could assume, they had found out that the two of them were not a part of the organization—he just didn’t know how.

"I’m going for the ones over there," Eris stated, shooting her bow in the direction from where the first shot came.

As she did, a shout resounded, and Neraxis could see a body fall to the ground.

"I’ll go for these ones then," he said and focused on the other group.

Once he spotted a single person, Neraxis did not waste any time, immediately using {Sword Dash} and appearing right before one of the monarchs.

Before the monarch could even react, he was cleaved in half, with the remaining group loading the ballista arrows standing there in shock.

But their shock didn’t last long, as Neraxis followed up with a {Simple Horizontal Slash}, slicing most of the monarchs in half as well as the ballista itself.

Yet he wasn’t finished, as off in the distance, he spotted another ballista being rolled over—and even further beyond, many more monarchs.

I... We are surrounded, Neraxis thought with a sour look and jumped into the trees, traveling across the branches toward the new batch of monarchs.

On the other end, Eris was holding up well. She was picking off the monarchs from a distance, her speed impressive.

Alas, he had his own group to worry about, as he waited for the exact moment when they set up and began loading the ballista arrows.

Only then did Neraxis use {Stellar Dominion’s: Cosmic Cascade}.

As he did, the monarchs’ bodies were set aflame by the astral mana, most of them burning to a crisp.

However, the few remaining ones, Neraxis jumped down to personally finish them off.

He looked back at where Eris was, just to see her dealing with them pretty easily.

Yet, there was one more thing he spotted—a ballista even farther away from her, its arrow tip glinting faintly.

Hmm... Neraxis thought while jumping on a tree branch and sitting down comfortably. It looks like she was a little bit careless.

The ballista was aimed at her, and soon, it would be fired.

He sat there, waiting—but after just a few seconds, he let out a deep sigh before dropping down onto the ground and dashing toward her.

[You’re going to help her?] Evangeline asked with amusement.

Just this once, he replied as he finally arrived at where she was perched.

And before she could even process his appearance, he jumped up, cutting the branch on which she sat.

As he did, a ballista arrow flew past where she was, making her flinch as she landed fluently on the ground.

"You..." Eris glared at him.

But he shrugged it off before kicking her into the tree, making her dodge another ballista arrow.

"You’re welcome," Neraxis said and proceeded to glance at where the arrows had come from.

Yet what met his eyes was something he wasn’t exactly expecting.

People in white jackets stretched as far as the eye could see—dozens of ballistas all aimed directly at him.

They brought a fucking army...
