Chapter 65: Wind and earth

Shadowwind’s beast spread its wings and a blast of wind came out of it. The winds shot forward with a howling shockwave. Blasts of wind blades spun in it and sliced through the walls, cutting them up as the wind blades curled around.

Vacuse stared at the power.

Stones rumbled and fell, creating a great dust bellow that Shadowwind shoved away with twisting winds.

Captain Yemi stood atop the pile of stones, looking up at him with a flat expression.

Shadowwind snorted. "Why create walls? I have no intention of running. I have already decided that you will die. And so you will."

Yemi didn’t say anything. He crouched, his legs swelling, and then he burst forward like lightning. The stones he was standing on turned to dust instantly.

He was so fast that Vacuse could barely keep his eyes on him. He could only follow the string of afterimages he left behind.

Bam!

He slammed into Shadowwind’s beast and they went hurling into the sky.

Vacuse watched with awe at the powers they were unleashing against each other. "But won’t Shadowwind have the advantage in the air?"

Just as Vacuse said that, he heard cracking sounds on the ground. Stones formed into spears and shot into the air like bolts of lightning.

Rumbling sounds echoed as more of the stones shaped themselves and shot upward.

Vacuse nodded with impressed eyes. "He’s controlling the stones even when he’s so high up in the air. He really deserves to be a Captain. What a loss."

But Shadowwind wasn’t weaker.

Vacuse felt the wind shift and thin as if something was pulling all the air in the world to one direction. He heard howling and then he finally understood why there was shadow in Shadowwind.

The sky was boiling. It was turning into a seething mass of black energy of compressed winds.

The bubble that was holding Vacuse was getting weaker and weaker as Shadowwind’s concentration was lessening. "I guess it’s time to escape."

But Vacuse didn’t seem to be in such a hurry because he only made a single Flicker Lance and then he made a hole in the bubble.

Then he raised the vial he had been holding since morning, the redness in it rolling like angry clouds. "I hope you did your job well, my messenger, Kagerou. Or else, this will be just a waste."

Then from his place, Vacuse poured the red substance down the hole he made.

"There is no better height to do this than here."

The red substance, a combination of liquid and gas, tumbled down into the air and began to rise.

It didn’t stay down and instead rose into the air like blood mist. The winds that Shadowwind was pulling did a great job in helping the red substance to move upward at an even more astonishing speed, and soon, it mixed with the clouds and the mass of winds that Shadowwind pulled.

The red substance glowed rich red like blood. Like the eyes of a Vorrakyn.

Vacuse sighed. "It’s not in my hands anymore, I think. I should preserve my life now when I can."

He narrowed his eyes and up to twenty Flicker Lances appeared at once, blasting around him like a storm of void, breaking the bubble with ease.

The winds howled in his ears as he dropped from the air. He readied his feet and immediately, as he felt the sensation of touching the ground, he folded himself into a roll.

Pain flared in his back and he grunted as he straightened. "That was painful."

But he was already healed.

"My Lord, are you okay?" Harkon asked as he rushed to his side hurriedly.

Vacuse smiled faintly. "No, I’m not. They’ve turned my dinner upside down and the Vorrakyn might just be wiped out tonight. All my plots were used against me and now I’m caught between getting killed and getting kidnapped."

Harkon shifted uncomfortably. He didn’t know what to say to Vacuse. "My Lord, we should get out of here."

Vacuse nodded but he made no move. The winds blew his robe wildly as he stared up into the storm above. Occasionally, stones would shape and fly up into the sky like hurling stars.

"You know, Harkon. I wanted to build my powers before I make any changes to the House. But it seems my enemies won’t give me breathing space to do that.

"They are smart. They don’t want me to gain power. But I don’t blame them. I will do terrible things to them." Vacuse smiled.

He turned to face his Captain of the New Dawn. "What do you think? I think I need a powerful force that can sweep the West to give me peace for a while. Or I can find a way to hasten my powers."

Harkon didn’t say anything. He looked at the sky anxiously and then he looked back at Vacuse.

Vacuse shook his head. "You are too boring, Harkon. But that’s why I made you my Captain. You are like a sword. Straight and sharp."

Vacuse stopped talking and they watched the sky together as stones and wind clashed. They couldn’t see what was happening but they could hear the sounds.

They weren’t nice sounds.

"We are going to wait a bit. I have chosen this place as another venue. Harkon, my Captain. Watch, I have declared this place as a battlefield."

The red substance glowed in the air like a moon of its own.

Finally, the sound of fighting lessened and the air gained a quality of hardness to it.

Shadowwind descended from the sky like a wrong angel. His body was bloodied, his left hand gone as if it was caught between the jaws of a beast.

A stone spearhead was still in his thigh and his expression was flickering with pain.

Vacuse’s smile gleamed in the night. "So you killed Captain Yemi? Did you check well? He has an annoying habit of coming back to life."

Shadowwind grunted. "He’s torn to pieces by the wind. We need to go, now."

Vacuse raised his hand. "This boss that wants me. Tell me, who is he?"
