The Spoiled Young Lady Who Married a Military Officer-Chapter 145 - 143: She’s Very Cute
Lu Xiao’s comment made everyone roar with laughter, instantly dispelling the somewhat somber mood.
When Wang Xinxin went to wash the dishes, Su Tang walked up to her.
"Don’t worry," she said. "Chen Zhengnian isn’t that kind of person. He won’t do anything to you. If he was really going to retaliate, do you think I’d still be standing here, perfectly fine?"
"Besides, my only issue with him was the unnecessary trouble he caused me before. Honestly, he’s actually a pretty decent guy."
There was no great conflict between Su Tang and Chen Zhengnian.
In truth, it was only because of the time Chen Man came and made a scene, which had left her feeling very upset.
Naturally, she blamed Chen Zhengnian for this unhappiness, since they were brother and sister, after all.
But that was all in the past now, and Su Tang had long since stopped thinking about it.
"I just felt that his cousin’s behavior was partly his fault, so I was a bit confrontational when I first spoke to him. But thinking back on it now, I was pretty rude myself."
Wang Xinxin said, wiping her hands dry.
’I was the one who spoke to him that way, and he was good-natured enough not to hold it against me. Who’s the one with the bad temper, really?’
Hearing Wang Xinxin’s words, Su Tang stepped forward and ruffled her hair.
"You have such a good heart, Xinxin. Alright, don’t overthink it. Go get some rest."
With that, Su Tang returned to her room. Wang Xinxin stood in the kitchen, mulling over Su Tang’s words.
’I was the one who was prejudiced against him and treated him poorly.’
’I should find some time to apologize to him, just in case he really starts holding a grudge against our family.’
With this plan in mind, Wang Xinxin got a ride on a colleague’s bicycle and went to the county town the next day after finishing work at the commune.
The supply co-op seemed to have everything under the sun, but after wandering around, Wang Xinxin still couldn’t think of a suitable gift for Chen Zhengnian.
After all, given Chen Zhengnian’s position, his family wasn’t lacking for anything fancy. But if her gift was too modest, it might not seem sincere.
She wracked her brain, truly at a loss.
Just as she was about to leave, she suddenly spotted some imported cufflinks in the distance.
The cufflinks were stylish, and the price wasn’t too steep—she could afford them.
Most importantly, the item wasn’t so expensive that giving it to him could be construed as bribery.
So, Wang Xinxin had the clerk wrap them up for her.
With her purchase made, she started heading back from the county town on her own. As luck would have it, it started to rain before she could get home.
What began as a light drizzle unexpectedly turned into a downpour.
She had no choice but to quicken her pace, hoping to get home before she was soaked to the bone.
The sky was growing dim when a pair of bright headlights appeared behind her. She stepped aside to let the vehicle pass, but the Jeep pulled up right next to her.
"Get in. I’ll give you a ride home."
The voice from inside the car was Chen Zhengnian’s. Wang Xinxin turned her head and saw him.
"The rain is going to get worse. This road will be impassable soon."
Chen Zhengnian explained. Wang Xinxin glanced around and figured he was right.
So, without further hesitation, she pulled open the passenger door and climbed in.
They drove in silence. Chen Zhengnian wasn’t a talkative person to begin with.
Wang Xinxin was normally quite talkative, but facing Chen Zhengnian now, she felt too guilty to say much of anything.
As the vehicle rounded a corner, Wang Xinxin nearly fell onto Chen Zhengnian.
She quickly righted herself, gripping the handle beside her tightly, terrified of making any more physical contact with him.
"I’m sorry for the trouble I caused your cousin-in-law before. I’ve already explained things to her."
"She said she didn’t mind. My apologies, I only found out later that Doctor Su was your cousin-in-law."
Chen Zhengnian added as an explanation.
He explained that he sometimes acted without considering others’ feelings.
For instance, he had wanted to give Su Tang a gift to thank her for saving his life.
But he had forgotten that a doctor accepting such a gift could be seen as taking a bribe—a punishable offense. No wonder she had been so angry.
To say nothing of him trying to give her money afterward.
Coupled with what Chen Man had done, it was only natural for Wang Xinxin to be sarcastic with him.
He was seven or eight years her senior, so he wasn’t going to hold it against her.
"I’m sorry. My attitude was awful before. I judged you unfairly."
He hadn’t expected to hear the young woman’s meek apology the moment he finished speaking.
After she spoke, Wang Xinxin placed the special cufflinks she had bought at the supply co-op on the seat next to her.
"This is an apology gift. I don’t have much money, so it’s all I could afford. I hope you won’t hold my previous words against me."
Her heart was pounding. Chen Zhengnian’s gaze lingered on the bag for only a second before shifting away. Just then, they arrived at her home. Wang Xinxin pulled open the door and scrambled out.
’In her entire life, it was the first time she had ever given a gift to a man.’
’Since he accepted her gift, he surely wouldn’t hold a grudge over what happened before, right?’
Thinking this, Wang Xinxin finally breathed a sigh of relief.
She had no idea that after she left, a couple of chuckles erupted from the back seat of the Jeep.
"Chen Lü, is this the first time you’ve ever received a gift from a young lady?"
"Exactly! You walk around with that stone face all day, scaring off all the girls. It’s not easy, you know. All grown up and getting a gift from a girl for the first time! Quick, let us see what treasure it is."
After they spoke, they caught Chen Zhengnian’s gaze in the rearview mirror.
Both of them immediately fell silent, not daring to say another word. That look could kill. It was terrifying.
Of course, Chen Zhengnian wasn’t about to open Wang Xinxin’s gift in front of them.
He had been on a mission with his comrades today and was on his way back when he happened upon Wang Xinxin getting soaked in the rain, so he decided to give her a ride.
Perhaps because it was too dark, Wang Xinxin hadn’t noticed there were other people in the back and had just blurted everything out.
"Chen Lü, you’re not getting any younger. That young lady seems pretty nice. Isn’t she the one who argued with you at the commune?"
After his comrade spoke, Chen Zhengnian suddenly recalled her fiery and impolite demeanor the last time he had seen her.
’Truthfully, he didn’t like that type of girl at all.’
’They seemed too brazen, just like Chen Man.’
’But for some reason, Chen Zhengnian found that side of Wang Xinxin to be cute, not at all repulsive.’
"One more word out of you, and it’s a hundred laps on the training field tomorrow."
After he dropped that icy threat, the Jeep started moving again. The two men in the back didn’t dare utter another word.
’A hundred laps? Was he trying to kill them?’
