Chapter 58: Ch 58: Breakout the madness- Part 2

"Don’t look so worried. I will propose my plan to help the government out without letting my identity slip."

Selene promised but the others did not look as convinced as she hoped to make them be.

"But, what if they trace it back to us?"

Ethan spoke up,

"I’ll take precautions. The proposal will be untraceable. And if it does come back to us, we’ll have a contingency plan. I know what I am doing." freewēbnoveℓ.com

Selene assured, but the real reason she was doing this was to create a fracture between the government and Vale family’s future business relationship.

It would not impact much, but it would make Selene feel like she got a part of her revenge without hurting anyone...except the Vale family’s funds.

Orion’s fingers drummed on the table, a habit he had when he was thinking hard.

"If this works, wouldn’t it also draw the attention of the Vale family?"

Selene’s expression darkened.

"They’re already interested. This way, we can control the narrative. Keep them guessing, rather than have them hunting us down."

Ethan finally picked up his fork, spearing a piece of cold potato.

"Alright, I’m in. But if we’re doing this, we’re doing it together."

Zara nodded.

"You don’t have to carry this alone, Selene. We’ve got your back."

Selene’s shoulders relaxed slightly, the weight of the day finally easing just a bit.

"Thank you,"

She said softly.

Now, it was time for her to prevent an accident from happening.

Next morning, Selene stood in front of the cracked bathroom mirror, staring at her altered reflection.

Her once dark hair was now a vibrant chestnut brown, thanks to a temporary dye. She’d used makeup to contour her features differently, softening the edges of her face an

d adding subtle shadows around her eyes.

The goal was simple: become unrecognizable.

She adjusted the beanie on her head, tucking away stray strands of hair, and pulled a simple scarf around her neck to obscure the lower half of her face.

"Good enough. I don’t think any visual identification machine will be able to find out who I am. I should be able to get by just fine."

She murmured, her voice muffled by the fabric.

She exhaled sharply, then turned away from the mirror.

The sun was still low on the horizon as Selene slipped out of the house, taking care not to wake the others.

The streets were bustling, filled with people trying to make sense of their new reality.

Vendors sold makeshift weapons, and small groups gathered to test their new powers, showing off flames, shields, and telekinetic tricks.

People were all around once more, finding joy in the smallest of gestures. Most of these people were ones who did not have much to offer, but still, they did their best to live.

Human race was an adaptive one, and their quick adjustment to the apocalypse was a remarkable way to be able to tell.

Selene moved through the crowd, her body language purposefully unremarkable.

Her destination loomed ahead: the government’s information camp, a temporary setup within a repurposed office building next to a low-level dungeon.

The building had been fortified, with armed guards at the entrance and barricades along the windows.

She didn’t plan on using the front door.

Instead, she circled around the back of the building, finding an old maintenance door. It was locked, but a quick glance with Insight revealed the mechanism inside.

With a bit of finesse, she jimmied the lock open and slipped inside.

The hallway was dimly lit, and her footsteps echoed softly on the tile floors. She could hear voices up ahead, a mixture of urgent discussions and clicking keyboards.

Selene entered a large room, its walls lined with monitors displaying news feeds, rankings, and reports on the latest dungeon activities.

’How careless of these people to leave these files out like this. But I am sure they do not expect anyone to actually sneak into their base in the first place.’

Selene sighed at the lack of security, but then decided to focus on her mission.

A group of officials in suits stood around a central table, their expressions grim as they debated strategy.

One of them, a tall man with silver hair, looked up first. His eyes narrowed as he noticed her.

"Who the hell are you?"

He demanded, his voice sharp.

Selene didn’t flinch. She raised her hand, showing she wasn’t a threat—yet.

"I am someone who is here to help you out. Were you planning to make a ranking system? I am here to tell you to abandon your plans for it.."

She announced, letting her voice cut through the room’s noise.

Every eye turned to her.

"Excuse me? How did you get in here?"

The silver-haired man’s face twisted in anger.

Selene shrugged.

"It wasn’t hard. If I can sneak in, so can others. Your security is a joke."

Murmurs rippled through the group, a mix of confusion and concern.

Another official, a woman with short-cropped blonde hair, stepped forward.

"You’ve got thirty seconds to explain yourself before we call security."

"Fine."

Selene took a deep breath, channeling the confidence she didn’t entirely feel.

"Your plan to introduce public rankings and plant government agents as the top-tier awakeners? It’s a bad move. You’re underestimating the system and overestimating your control over the narrative."

The room fell silent, her words hanging heavy in the air.

The silver-haired man’s scowl deepened.

"How do you know about that?"

"I have a power, one that lets me see glimpses of the future. And I can tell you this: the system is about to release its own rankings, and it won’t care about your political games"

Selene said, adding a layer of mystery to her bluff.

A ripple of unease moved through the officials.

Selene could see it—the way their shoulders tightened, the way they shifted on their feet, and how their eyes darted to one another, looking for confirmation.

The blonde woman’s voice wavered.

"If you’re lying..."

"I’m not. Think about it. The system has been assigning levels, showing people their growth, and rewarding them for achievements. It’s only logical that it would introduce rankings to motivate people further."

Selene took a step closer, her eyes intense.
