Chapter 17: The Forge of Sovereignty

The air in the Dev Room was heavy with the scent of ozone and the low-frequency hum of the Iron Heart. Kaelen sat cross-legged on the floor, the Cinder Soul hovering between his palms. The orange sphere pulsed like a miniature sun, casting long, flickering shadows that danced against the obsidian walls.

[SYSTEM STATUS: SOVEREIGN RECALIBRATION]

[Current Level: 88]

[Authority: 20% (DEGRADED)]

[Unallocated XP: 2,500,000]

For the first time since waking up in this world, Kaelen felt the sheer scale of the power he was wielding. Level 88. In the original game, this was the threshold where a player ceased to be a mere combatant and began to influence the world’s physics. But the loss of 5% Authority stung. The shadows in the corners of the room felt sluggish, and the "Global Script" was harder to read, like a book with half the pages blurred by water.

"You’ve been staring at that soul for three hours, Kaelen," Elara said, entering the room. She had changed into fresh robes, but her hands were still stained with the silver-blue residue of the healing spells she had used on Lucius. "The council is demanding an audience. They want to know why the West Coast is now a sheet of glass."

"The council wants to know if they can sell the glass," Kaelen replied without opening his eyes. "Tell them to wait. If I don’t integrate this soul properly, the next King won’t just turn a coast to glass; he’ll turn the kingdom to steam."

He focused on the blue screens floating in his peripheral vision. He had a choice to make, one that would define the next hundred Chapters of their survival.

Kaelen’s eyes snapped open, glowing with a deep, abyssal violet. "System, I choose Option 1. But with a modification."

[WARNING: MODIFICATIONS REQUIRE HIGH INTUITION STAT]

[Calculating...]

[Modification Accepted: ’The Empyrean Network’.]

"I’m not just stabilizing the kingdom," Kaelen whispered. "I’m turning every citizen into a node."

He slammed his hands together, crushing the Cinder Soul into the Iron Heart.

The reaction was instantaneous. A wave of heat erupted from the core, not a destructive flame, but a warm, golden-orange ripple that spread through the palace floors, out into the city, and across the entire realm.

[GLOBAL DECREE: THE WARMTH OF THE SOVEREIGN]

[Authority Restored: 25%]

[New Feature: ’Experience Tithe’ – 1% of all XP earned by citizens is funneled to the Sovereign.]

"What... what did you just do?" Elara gasped, clutching the doorway as the floor beneath her feet pulsed with a steady, rhythmic heat.

"I gave them the fire," Kaelen said, standing up. He felt the 5% Authority return, but it felt different now. It was no longer a cold, administrative power; it was alive, fueled by the collective heartbeat of his people. "The Cinder-King’s soul is now the battery for Astora. Our people won’t just level up; they’ll grow stronger just by breathing the air in our borders."

He turned his attention to the remaining 1,500,000 XP.

"Now, for the boy."

He beckoned to the shadows, and a hunk of "Void-Steel" emerged from the floor. He poured the remaining experience into the metal, shaping it with his mind. He didn’t make a sword. Lucius already had a blade.

He made a Cape of the Solar Eclipse.

"Lucius!" Kaelen barked.

The boy appeared a moment later, looking recovered but wary. Kaelen threw the garment at him. It was heavy, woven from darkness but lined with a shimmering, orange silk that seemed to breathe.

"Wear it," Kaelen commanded. "The Tidal Queen is coming in twenty days. Her power is the ’Crushing Depths.’ You’ll need the Cinder-King’s heat just to keep your blood from freezing in your veins."

Lucius donned the cape, and as the clasps locked, a faint orange aura flickered around him. He looked like a warrior stepped out of an ancient myth.

[CHARACTER UPDATE: LUCIUS]

[Level: 55]

[Class: Solar Shadow Knight]

"I feel... warm," Lucius said, looking at his hands. "Like I’m standing in the sun, even in this dark room."

"Good," Kaelen said, his voice turning cold again. "Because the sun is about to go out. System, show me the Southern Map."

The holographic display shifted to the Great Southern Ocean. The water there was swirling in a clockwise direction, a whirlpool the size of a province forming in the center of the sea.

[THREAT DETECTED: THE TIDAL QUEEN]

[Status: Awakening...]

[Primary Directive: Drown the ’Virus’.]

"She’s not going to attack the coast," Kaelen noted, his finger hovering over the capital. "She’s going to raise the water table. She’s going to sink the entire kingdom from the inside out."

"How do we fight the ocean?" Elara asked, her voice trembling.

Kaelen looked at the Iron Heart, now glowing with a hybrid violet-orange light.

"We don’t," Kaelen said, a dark smirk playing on his lips. "We’re going to build a fleet that doesn’t need the water. And we’re going to use the Experience Tithe to build it in ten days."

He turned to the blue screen, his eyes scanning the new "Construction" options.
