Chapter 386: Return To Dortmund I

January 3rd, 2015.

The winter break was over.

Mateo stood at the departure gate at Barcelona-El Prat Airport, his carry-on bag slung over his shoulder, his heart heavy with the bittersweet ache of leaving. Isabella stood beside him, her hand in his, her eyes red-rimmed but smiling.

"I hate this part," she said softly. "The goodbyes."

"Me too," Mateo signed. "But it’s only for a little while. You’ll come visit soon, right?"

"Of course," Isabella said. "I’ll be there for the Bayern match. I wouldn’t miss it for the world."

Mateo pulled her into a tight embrace, breathing in the familiar scent of her perfume, memorizing the feel of her in his arms. When they finally pulled apart, he cupped her face in his hands and signed, "I love you. Thank you for this break. For everything."

"I love you too," Isabella whispered. "Now go. Go be brilliant. Go make history."

Mateo kissed her one more time, then forced himself to turn and walk toward the gate. He looked back once, saw her standing there with tears streaming down her face and a brave smile on her lips, and felt his own eyes sting.

But he kept walking. Because that’s what he had to do.

The second half of the season was waiting.

---

The flight to Dortmund was uneventful, giving Mateo time to think, to reflect, to prepare mentally for what lay ahead. He pulled out his phone and scrolled through the photos from the break the Christmas celebration, the training session with Messi, New Year’s Eve with Isabella. Each image was a reminder of what mattered, of why he played, of who he was beyond the football pitch.

He also pulled up the Bundesliga standings. Dortmund was top of the table, three points clear of Bayern Munich. But Bayern had a game in hand, and everyone knew that the second half of the season would be a brutal, relentless grind. There was no room for error, no margin for complacency.

Mateo felt a familiar flutter of nerves in his stomach, but it wasn’t fear. It was excitement. Anticipation. He was ready for this. Ready to lead, ready to compete, ready to give everything he had.

---

When the plane touched down in Dortmund, Mateo was greeted by the cold, gray January weather that was so different from the sunny warmth of Barcelona. But there was something comforting about it, something grounding. This was his home now. This was where he belonged.

He took a taxi back to the training complex, where the team dormitory was located. As he walked through the familiar hallways, he felt a sense of calm settle over him. The break had been necessary, restorative, but this this was where he thrived.

He opened the door to his room and found Lukas sprawled on his bed, scrolling through his phone.

"Mateo!" Lukas jumped up, a wide grin on his face. "You’re back!"

Mateo dropped his bag and signed, "I’m back. How was your break?"

"Good," Lukas said, flopping back onto his bed. "Went home, saw my family, ate way too much food. The usual. But I’m glad to be back. I missed this place. Missed the routine."

"Me too," Mateo signed, even though he had just been thinking about how much he missed Barcelona.

"So, how was your break?" Lukas asked. "Did you do anything exciting?"

Mateo thought about the training session with Messi, the Christmas celebration, the scholarships, New Year’s Eve with Isabella. He signed, "It was perfect. Exactly what I needed."

"Good," Lukas said. "Because the second half of the season is going to be insane. Klopp’s already sent out a message. First training session is tomorrow at 8 AM, and he says it’s going to be brutal."

Mateo smiled. "Bring it on."

---

That evening, Mateo unpacked his bag, putting away his clothes and setting the signed Messi shirt on his desk where he could see it every day. He pulled out his phone and texted Isabella: "Made it back safely. Miss you already."

Her response came quickly: "Miss you too. Now go get some rest. Big day tomorrow. ❤️"

He smiled and set his phone aside. Then he pulled out his journal, the one Don Carlos had given him, and began to write.

January 3rd, 2015

I’m back in Dortmund. The break was incredible exactly what I needed to recharge, to remember why I play, to reconnect with the people who matter most. Training with Messi was surreal. He gave me so much wisdom, so much perspective. I feel ready now. Ready for the second half of the season, ready for the challenges ahead.

My resolution for this year: Play with joy. Lead with humility. Give with generosity. I want to be the best version of myself, not just as a player, but as a person. I want to make a difference.

The title race is going to be brutal. Bayern won’t make it easy. But I believe in this team. I believe in Klopp. And I believe in myself. We can do this. We will do this.

Here we go.

He closed the journal and set it aside, feeling a sense of clarity and purpose. The break had given him perspective, had reminded him of what truly mattered. And now, he was ready to channel all of that into the second half of the season.

---

The next morning, Mateo woke at 6:30 AM, his body still adjusting to the time change. He went through his morning routine shower, breakfast, stretching and by 7:45, he and Lukas were walking across the training complex toward the main pitch.

The rest of the team was already gathering, their breath misting in the cold January air. Mateo greeted his teammates Reus, Hummels, Aubameyang, Gündoğan with handshakes and hugs. There was a palpable energy in the air, a sense of determination and focus.

At exactly 8:00 AM, Jürgen Klopp strode onto the pitch, his presence commanding immediate attention. He was dressed in his usual training gear, a whistle around his neck, his eyes sharp and intense.

"Welcome back," he said, his voice carrying across the pitch. "I hope you all had a good break, because it’s over now. The second half of the season starts today, and I’m going to be honest with you it’s going to be the hardest thing you’ve ever done."

He paced back and forth, his gaze sweeping over the assembled players.

"We’re top of the table. Three points clear. But that means nothing. Bayern is breathing down our necks, and they’re not going to give up. Every single match from here on out is a final. Every single point matters. There is no room for complacency, no room for error. We have to be perfect."

He stopped and looked directly at Mateo.

"But I believe in you. I believe in this team. I believe that we have what it takes to win this league, to compete in the Champions League, to make history. But it’s going to require everything you have. Your sweat, your blood, your heart. Are you ready?"

"Yes, coach!" the team shouted in unison.

"I said, are you ready?!"

"YES, COACH!"

Klopp grinned. "Good. Then let’s get to work."

---

The training session was brutal, just as Klopp had promised. High-intensity drills, tactical work, conditioning everything was designed to push them to their limits. But Mateo thrived in it. He felt sharp, focused, energized. The break had recharged him, and now he was ready to unleash all of that pent-up energy.

During a small-sided game, Mateo received the ball in midfield, turned, and threaded a perfect through ball to Aubameyang, who slotted it home with ease. The two exchanged a fist bump, their partnership clicking seamlessly.

"Beautiful, Mateo!" Klopp shouted from the sideline. "That’s what I want to see! Vision, precision, confidence!"

After the session, as the players cooled down and hydrated, Klopp pulled Mateo aside.

"How are you feeling?" he asked. "Really feeling?"

Mateo signed, "Good. Really good. The break was exactly what I needed. I feel refreshed, focused, ready."

Klopp nodded. "Good. Because I’m going to need you to be at your best. You’re the heartbeat of this team, Mateo. When you play well, we play well. The pressure is going to be immense, but I know you can handle it. You’ve proven that time and time again."

"I won’t let you down," Mateo signed.

"I know you won’t," Klopp said, clapping him on the shoulder. "Now go get some rest. We have a long road ahead."
