Chapter 384: The New Year’s Resolution I

December 31st, 2014.

The last day of a year that had changed everything.

Mateo stood in front of the mirror in his old room at Casa de los Niños, adjusting the collar of his shirt. It was a simple outfit dark jeans, a crisp white button-down, a navy blazer but he wanted to look nice. Tonight was special.

Isabella had planned everything, insisting that they needed to mark the occasion properly. "It’s not every day you get to celebrate the end of the most incredible year of your life," she had said with a smile.

There was a soft knock on the door, and Don Carlos poked his head in. "Ready, mijo?"

Mateo nodded, signing, "As ready as I’ll ever be."

Don Carlos stepped into the room, his eyes warm with affection. "You look good. Grown up. It’s hard to believe you’re the same scared little boy who showed up here all those years ago."

"Sometimes I can’t believe it either," Mateo signed. "It feels like a dream."

"It’s not a dream," Don Carlos said gently. "It’s your life. A life you’ve earned through hard work, resilience, and an unshakeable belief in yourself. Never forget that."

Mateo felt a lump form in his throat. "Thank you. For everything. I wouldn’t be here without you."

Don Carlos crossed the room and pulled Mateo into a tight embrace. "You would have found your way, mijo. But I’m honored to have been part of your journey."

---

Isabella was waiting for him downstairs, and when Mateo saw her, his breath caught. She wore a simple black dress, her hair falling in soft waves around her shoulders, her eyes bright with excitement.

"You look beautiful," Mateo signed, and she blushed.

"You clean up pretty well yourself," she said with a smile.

They said their goodbyes to Don Carlos, Sister Maria Elena, and the children, who were having their own New Year’s celebration in the common room. Diego ran up to Mateo and threw his arms around his waist.

"Happy New Year, Mateo," he signed earnestly.

"Happy New Year, Diego," Mateo signed back. "I’ll see you tomorrow, okay?"

Diego nodded and released him, and Mateo and Isabella slipped out into the cool Barcelona night.

---

The restaurant Isabella had chosen was small and intimate, tucked away on a quiet street in the Gothic Quarter. It was the kind of place that locals loved but tourists rarely found warm lighting, exposed brick walls, mismatched furniture that somehow worked perfectly together. 𝙛𝒓𝓮𝒆𝔀𝒆𝙗𝓷𝒐𝙫𝒆𝙡.𝒄𝓸𝓶

They were seated at a corner table, away from the few other diners, and for a while, they just sat in comfortable silence, sipping wine and enjoying the ambiance.

"This year has been insane," Isabella said finally, breaking the silence. "I keep thinking about where we were a year ago. You had just signed with Dortmund, you were still finding your feet, still figuring out who you were as a player. And now..."

"And now?" Mateo signed with a small smile.

"And now you’re a Bundesliga champion, a Supercup winner, a regular starter for one of the best teams in Europe. You’re representing Spain at the international level. You’re... you’re incredible, Mateo."

Mateo felt his cheeks warm. "I had a lot of help."

"Don’t do that," Isabella said, her tone gentle but firm. "Don’t diminish what you’ve accomplished. Yes, you had support. Yes, you had people who believed in you. But you’re the one who did the work. You’re the one who showed up every single day, who pushed through the pain and the doubt and the fear. You’re the one who made it happen."

Mateo looked down at his hands, overwhelmed by her words. "Sometimes I feel like I don’t deserve it. Like I’m just lucky."

"Luck had nothing to do with it," Isabella said. "Mateo, you’re one of the most talented, hardworking, dedicated people I’ve ever met. You deserve every bit of success you’ve achieved. And you’re going to achieve so much more."

"What if I fail?" Mateo signed, his hands trembling slightly. "What if the second half of the season doesn’t go as well? What if I let everyone down?"

Isabella reached across the table and took his hands in hers, stilling their movement. "Then you’ll pick yourself up and try again. That’s what you do. That’s who you are. You’re not defined by your successes or your failures, Mateo. You’re defined by your character, by your resilience, by your heart. And that’s something no one can ever take away from you."

Mateo felt tears prick at his eyes. He squeezed her hands, grateful beyond words for her presence in his life.

---

After dinner, they walked through the narrow streets of the Gothic Quarter, hand in hand, their breath misting in the cold air. The city was alive with energy people spilling out of bars and restaurants, laughter echoing off the ancient stone walls, the distant sound of music and fireworks.

They made their way to the beach, the same beach where they had sat during the summer, and found a quiet spot away from the crowds. The Mediterranean stretched out before them, dark and endless, the waves lapping gently at the shore.

"Can I ask you something?" Isabella said, her voice soft.

"Anything," Mateo signed.

"What are your dreams? Not just for football, but for life. What do you want your future to look like?"

Mateo thought for a long moment, staring out at the water. Then he began to sign, slowly and deliberately.

"I want to keep playing at the highest level, of course. I want to win trophies, to compete in the biggest matches, to test myself against the best. But that’s not all. I want to use my platform, my success, to make a difference. I want to build more facilities like the one at Casa de los Niños. I want to create opportunities for kids who don’t have any. I want to show them that no matter where you come from, no matter what obstacles you face, you can achieve your dreams if you work hard enough and believe in yourself."

He paused, his hands still for a moment, then continued.

"And I want to have a family someday. Not right away, but eventually. I want to give my children the kind of love and stability I never had growing up. I want to be the kind of father who shows up, who supports, who believes. I want to break the cycle."

Isabella’s eyes were shining with tears. "That’s beautiful, Mateo. And you’re going to do all of it. I know you will."

"What about you?" Mateo signed. "What are your dreams?"

Isabella smiled. "I want to finish my degree, maybe go on to do a master’s. I want to work in education, to help kids who are struggling, who need someone to believe in them. And I want to do it with you by my side. I want us to build a life together, to support each other, to grow together."

"I want that too," Mateo signed, his heart full. "More than anything."

They sat in silence for a while, wrapped in each other’s arms, watching the waves and listening to the distant sounds of celebration.

---

As midnight approached, they made their way to a spot overlooking the city. From here, they could see the lights of Barcelona spread out below them, a glittering tapestry of life and energy.

"Five minutes," Isabella said, checking her phone.

Mateo pulled her close, his arms around her waist, her back against his chest. They stood like that, swaying gently, as the final minutes of 2014 ticked away.

"This year changed everything," Isabella said softly. "For both of us."

"It did," Mateo signed against her shoulder. "And I’m so grateful. For all of it. The good, the bad, the challenges, the triumphs. But most of all, I’m grateful for you."

Isabella turned in his arms, her eyes searching his face. "I love you, Mateo Alvarez. I love your heart, your courage, your kindness. I love the way you make me laugh, the way you make me think, the way you make me want to be better. I love all of you."

Mateo’s heart swelled. He signed, "I love you too. More than I can ever express."

The countdown began in the distance, voices rising in unison.

"Diez... nueve... ocho..."

Mateo and Isabella held each other, their foreheads pressed together, their hearts beating in sync.

"Siete... seis... cinco..."

Mateo thought about the year that was ending the triumphs, the setbacks, the growth, the learning.

"Cuatro... tres... dos..."

And he thought about the year that was beginning the challenges, the opportunities, the possibilities.

"Uno... ¡Feliz Año Nuevo!"

Fireworks exploded across the sky, brilliant bursts of color illuminating the night. And in that moment, as the new year arrived, Mateo kissed Isabella, pouring all of his love, all of his gratitude, all of his hope into that single, perfect moment.
