Chapter 14 - Hopeful

The menu for lunch was egg with toast along with steak. Although Violet's mouth would water immediately at any other time just from the smell, the pregnancy made her feel sick at the heavy meal.

Nevertheless, the tiny courage within her would never allow her to admit it to Sylas.

As the man elegantly picked up his fork and started eating— his movements were fast enough yet measured— Violet forced herself to take a bite out of the food.

After three to four bites, the hardly digested food fought to come out, but Violet ignored the discomfort, trying to stuff herself with as much as possible.

She waited for Sylas to stop eating, just so that she can do the same as well.

Violet's hand shook and the fork clattered against the plate, but she tightly grabbed on to it.

"The meal was never forced upon you," Sylas spoke out— Violet's small actions falling into his attention.

"I was never—"

Before she was able to control herself, Violet rushed towards the washroom and threw up everything until she couldn't anymore. Her vision went black for a second, and her body trembled.

She sat down on the bed in order to stabilize herself.

Sylas stepped into the room, and in his hand was a glass of steaming hot herbal tea. He extended his hand towards her, asking her to take it silently.

Violet did.

Then, cautiously staring at Sylas, she took a sip out of the drink. The tea had a slight aftertaste of citrus, a mixture of herbs, and ginger. And it did a good job at calming her nausea.

She stared at Sylas, surprised that he knew such a recipe.

"I feel much better now," Violet expressed, "Thank you, Alpha. And also, sorry for the trouble. I thought I would be able to finish it."

She did not want to disappoint him.

Sylas easily read through her emotions. After a few seconds of silence, he turned her back on him, about to leave the room, when Violet found the little courage within her to reach out to him.

She grabbed on to the hem of his shirt, stopping him in his steps.

Sylas turned back to find her hazel eyes staring at him pleadingly.

"Alpha, can I stay here?" Violet questioned, spending all her courage.

Her heart thumped rapidly against her chest as the anxiety almost swallowed her up. Sylas's gentle action made her feel maybe he was willing to warm up to her and probably even like her a little.

That made her feel hopeful.

"No," was Sylas's cold reply, cutting down all the expectations within Violet.

Tears stung in her eyes, glistening, but Violet did not let them fall.

This made Sylas add, "I can temporary arrangements for you in the human land. It will be safe there, and you can stay there until you are able to stand on your own feet."

That solemn expression in Sylas's eyes translated it for her how that was the most he was willing to compromise for her. Violet released his shirt.

She felt disappointed even though she had no right to be.

Definitely, he wouldn't be pleased with a stranger wanting to stay with them.

But even then, her heart hurt.

"Thank you, Alpha," Violet softly stated.

Seeing Violet, who was akin to a wilted flower, Sylas advised, "You would have it much easier if you got rid of that child, instead of being softhearted.

That child is hardly a life now, and it was forced upon you in the first place, causing you to lose everything. Because of the child, your life will be hampered, and you might not even be able to take your revenge."

Violet understood Sylas's well-intentions. The man's eyes did not hide the experience he had, and along with it came wisdom. He was far more mature than her and saw everything clearer.

"I know it is irresponsible for me to have the child. However, he is my only family now. He is someone I know I have to love, or else I will live my life full of hatred and revenge.

I don't want to live like that. It might take a while, but I will get it all set right. I will have both the pack and the revenge with my baby on my side. After all, he was by my side from the beginning. How can I abandon him?" Violet's tone was filled with conviction and hope.

"You can have a proper family in the future, and a child as well in the appropriate circumstances," Sylas couldn't help but say more.

Violet shook her head.

"It wouldn't be the same, Alpha. And I might not look like it, but deep down, I am a greedy person. I don't want to let go of anything that belongs to me."

Violet was resolute.

But then thinking that she was going overboard, Violet softened her voice and said, "Maybe I sound too naive to you, Alpha. I have nothing planned on what to do next yet I want a lot."

"You won't if you manage to get all you want," Sylas stated, not denying how it was foolish of her to be so hopeful.

"Then, Alpha, as a well-wisher, won't you allow me to stay here?" Violet questioned.

"My answer remains unchanged," Sylas stated.

When Lucas returned to the house late at night, he found Violet sitting in the living room— under the dim lighting. She tore the petals from the jasmine, covering the wooden table with the petals.

Lucas stood up straight and cleared his throat to fix his voice, so that he did not sound inebriated.

"What are you pondering over?"

Violet raised her head, staring at Lucas gloomily. She realized that the man was dressed flashy compared to usual, and as he came closer, there was a hint of alcohol on him. Then, the lipstick marks on his collar did not go unnoticed by her.

"You have a mate?" Violet asked— slightly surprised that she didn't see her around.

Lucas chuckled at that and ran his hand through his hair.

"I am a free wolf. There is no such thing as a mate in my life."

Violet's eyes held disapproval in them. "You are a scumbag then. Your mate will be upset when she finds out."

Lucas only grinned widely at it and pinched her cheek.

"Look at you speaking so boldly," Lucas vocalized. "Mates should be an ancient concept. Why should we be bound to someone we didn't choose? If you weren't pregnant, I would take you to the club and let you enjoy life."

Violet stared at him dumbfounded.

No, thanks, she wouldn't go there even if she wasn't pregnant.

"Back off, Lucas. You stink." Violet scrunched up her nose.
