Chapter 14: Rising strength
Kira’s POV
I stood there in Ryker’s Palace and watched as he talked with Damon Asher’s friend and beta. It felt like I was dreaming; Alpha Asher wanted me back after he had rejected and humiliated me. I was very happy when Ryker refused to let me go.
There was no way I would be going back to that pack, the place where no one cared about me. Everyone saw me as an object of scorn and an object of ridicule, a plaything
There was no way I was going back to that kind of place; I watched as Damon and his companion left Ryker’s Palace. I couldn’t help but wonder why they had come for me.
I wondered if they had heard about my potential and my abilities; maybe they had heard I was the moonkeeper.
He probably wanted to keep me as a trophy, a souvenir so he could show the people or the world that the moon keeper is on his side.
I felt disgusted by the thought of having to be a plaything or an object to be showcased. The mere thought of it made my stomach churn.
Ryker had been standing in front of me for some time now. I didn’t know because I had been trapped in an ocean of thought. The sensation of his cold hands on my shoulder Brought me back to reality.
"Are you okay Kira?" he asked
"I don’t know" I replied
He took in a deep breath "Is this because of your former pack members who just left?"
"Why do you think he wants me back?"
"Honestly, I am not sure but I know it must have something to do with you as the moon keeper."
Since I left my former pack I had never heard anything from them until when Damon came.
The night came faster than expected; I remained in Ryker’s Palace while he attended to other things for the day, and at the end, he walked me back home. He made me promise him not to stay up all night thinking about things.
But how was I supposed to stop myself from thinking, I had found out about so many things in the last few days, and I had just found out that Asher wanted me back.

"I challenge you to a duel," Isabella said
Okay, who is Isabella? And why was she challenging me to a duel?
I had barely slept the night after I got home from Ryker’s Palace; I couldn’t sleep well as my head was full of thoughts, which led to seeing some kind of funny things in my dreams.
"I couldn’t stay at home; I felt restless, so I decided to go to Ryker’s. When I arrived, I was stunned by what I saw. There was a very beautiful lady with long black hair and radiant, light skin. From her stance, I could tell she wasn’t just an ordinary wolf."
I asked one of the wolf guards who she was, and they told me that she was supposed to be alpha Ryker’s, Luna.
"Her name is Isabella Montero, she was supposed to be his mate" The guard said
I fixed my gaze on both of them from the same spot the guard was standing.
The sentence ’supposed to be’ got me thinking for a while, wondering what that meant and why the wolf guard made use of that phrase; from how Ryker and Isabella stood and from Ryker’s facial expression, I could tell that they were having a heated argument.
I wondered what kind of argument could make Ryker’s face so strong, the first time I saw his face like this was when he heard that some men from my former pack had come for me.
"I couldn’t see Isabella’s face because her back was turned toward me."
I tried to listen, but I couldn’t hear anything; I still hadn’t developed my wolf potential well enough; though my speed had improved, and my healing rate was spectacular, I still couldn’t do the heightened hearing.
"Can you tell what they are discussing?" I asked the guard
"You are their subject of discussion."
Just then, I heard my name, the voice was unfamiliar but I knew who it was.
I looked ahead and saw that Isabella was no longer facing Ryker, but she had turned to face me.
"So you are the Kira, right? The supposed moon keeper" she laughed
"I didn’t know whether to answer her or not. As she walked closer to me, an intimidating presence accompanied her. I was getting cold feet, but I tried to maintain my composure."
"You look..." she paused sizing me from up to down "Weak" she blurted out
"Isa, stop this" Ryker yelled
I felt a twist in my stomach, he had a pet name for her. Honestly, I wasn’t sure why that concerned me, it wasn’t supposed to bother me, but it did.
"Calm down, Ryker, I just want to check out the person who our life depends on", she yelled back.
Isabella got to where I stood and began to pace around me; I stood, mute, just observing.
She chuckled "I can’t believe someone as weak as you are is destined to be our saviour"
"Rage began to boil inside me. I knew I was weak; I knew I needed to get stronger if I wanted to take on this destiny. But she didn’t have to keep rubbing my weakness in my face."
She began to say so many things that I felt like this wasn’t just about the moon keeper’s destiny, there was something else and I was a hundred per cent sure that it had to be my closeness with Ryker.
Isabella had not been around, but I was certain someone must have reported everything that had happened to her, and there was no other name in my mind other than Mara.
I rolled my eyes, scanning the room looking for her; there she was at the corner of the room, wearing an evil smile.
I gritted my teeth, and just then, Isabella challenged me to a duel.
The moment she said it everyone began to give way, and In the blink of an eye there was an open space and we stood in the middle
’What!!!!’ I screamed in my head
How was I supposed to fight her? She was the strongest female in the pack. I didn’t need a soothsayer to tell me this; it was evident in the behaviour of everyone around. Some were shivering, while others just stood still watching.
"I don’t think I want to fight you," I said firmly, trying to hide the fear in my voice.
She laughed hysterically "Is that your way of telling me you are too weak and you can’t fight me?"
I bowed my head; in my heart, I was praying to the goddess to find a way to prevent this duel from happening because I knew there was no way I would win.
Suddenly, I felt a sharp pain in my belly; it sent me falling to the ground. I groaned in pain.
"Is this who you say is the moon keeper?" she laughed
She turned towards Ryker’s direction, but Ryker looked away; I wondered why he didn’t stop this, why he was allowing this to happen.
Just before she turned back in my direction, I stood up, taking my defence posture; I had decided to face this threat head-on; the fact that she kept demeaning me and questioning my abilities to become the moon keeper fueled my anger.
"Oh I see you’ve decided to man up"
She came at me again, and this time, I tried to dodge, but she was too fast. Before I could move, she had already landed a blow on me.
"Too slow", She chuckled. "I guess I will just kill you before your weakness kills all of us."
She came closer to me, raised her legs very high, and began to bring them down with force. Without thinking twice, I rolled away from the position I was in. Her legs landed on the bare floor. The impact made the ground collapse.
My eyes widened realising how strong she was and realising that I could have died if I had allowed myself to be hit.
Seeing how hell-bent she was on ending me, my will became stronger my resolve strengthened, I wasn’t going to allow myself to be ridiculed anymore, I was done being the weakling
She charged at me, her hands formed in a punch; as she was about to land the blow, I saw myself being hit, but all of a sudden, I moved away swiftly from the direction of her blow. I wasn’t going to let this opportunity to land my first attack on her pass me by.
"I held her tightly with my left hand and used my right hand to strike her elbow with full force. I could hear the sound of her bones cracking, but I didn’t stop there. I rolled her swiftly and released her after several rotations."
To my surprise, she was able to stop herself from landing on the wall by stomping her feet on the ground, creating a kind of impact with the ground that reduced the speed.
When she finally got her balance, something changed about her; her eye colour changed to red, and she growled. I knew I had pissed her off.
But I was more bothered by her eye colour; she was an alpha too; how was that possible?
