Chapter 217: The Storm

Two Moons Later

The sound of crashing tides doused the sound of her footsteps.

Isadora adjusted the shawl and the rest of the attire she wore. It was the Serpent’s. Thankfully, it wasn’t too big for her, but it wasn’t small either.

She walked up the stairs to the top deck. Her body got drenched instantly from the pouring rain.

The sea had not been still for a long time, and the storm got worse. They could barely navigate properly, worrying about getting swept away or lost.

But Thornfoot mentioned repeatedly that they were on the right track. Their lives were in that dirtbag’s hands, and Isadora did not like that thought.

That Fae was selfish and cunning to the bones. He did things that only benefited him.

"We’ll take the boat from here!" Thornfoot yelled through the roaring thunder and the clamant ripples colliding into the ship.

Barrels and supplies were swept away, and the ship’s crew did their best to navigate, but it was only a matter of time before this ship was torn apart.

Isadora feared for the others. They might die!

"In Alda’s name, we’ll get blasted off by the waves!" Logi yelled back.

"These storms are Faemade. And if we don’t get off this point, it’s all useless."

"Faemade?" Isadora interrupted.

"Yes! Courtesy of the Serpents. They use it to ward off any incoming ships."

"What do you mean?" she asked with wide eyes, but then realization seized her. "Are you saying the Serpent’s Tower is built in the middle of the sea?"

"Didn’t I mention that before?"

"No, you didn’t."

The sudden gravelly voice grasped their attention. Kraven grabbed Thornfoot by his collar. "If this is some sort of plan to get us lost, then I swear I’ll hold you down and drown you." He growled.

Thornfoot gulped. "I-I speak the truth!"

"We’ve got to turn back, the ship can’t handle much pressure!" The captain yelled from the quarterdeck.

"We’ve to leave now!" Thornfoot said. "Or else we’ll be thrown off course, and it’s sailing all the way back to this point. Choose!"

Kraven wagered on getting rid of this annoying pest now.

"Kraven," Isadora appealed to him. "The crew will die here if we don’t get off."

Kraven released him, but only because of Isadora. "Get the boat."

They sailed away from the ship into the storm, the water rippling. It was far more intense than when they were on the ship.

"Keep moving left!" Thornfoot instructed, pointing his left hand.

Logi worked the paddle as told, teeth clenching as the pressure got tighter; it was only a matter of time before it snapped.

Isadora held onto the edge of the boat for safety, her eyes lingering on the ship now in a far distance.

She couldn’t believe two moons had passed, she would have denied it if she hadn’t been counting the days.

Kraven stood on the boat, eyes skimming through until they caught something, but it was hard to make out because of the rain. "Keep paddling, I see something!"

"Milady."

Isadora turned her gaze to Thornfoot, suddenly crouching in front of her.

"How well do you think the gods favor you?"

She narrowed her eyes, wondering why he asked such a question. "Now’s not the time for riddles if that’s what you intend."

"Of course not." He nodded. "But you should have answered, though."

"What—" She couldn’t finish her words because he grabbed her by the neck with his arm and forced her to her feet. ƒreeωebnovel.ƈom

Logi halted his movement instantly, and Kraven turned toward the scene.

"What are you doing?!" Logi yelled.

"I’m not going to that Tower with you!"

"Careful, Thornfoot," Kraven warned. "The little time you have will be shortened."

Thornfoot laughed. "It already is!" he growled. "If you don’t kill me, then he will. Forgive me if I don’t want to die so soon, you piece of—"

Isadora elbowed him right in the face, the force knocking him out, his grip that remained on her dragged her down with him.

"Isadora!"

Isadora struggled beneath as Thornfoot pulled her down with him, roaring as bubbles escaped from his mouth, forcing her to go far deeper into the depths with him.

She fought through, kicking him away, and moved her hand to swim to the top, but the pressure prevented her from surfacing.

She could see the shadow of their boat, and it was just a few seconds away, but her arms gave up.

Suddenly, a hand dipped into the water, reaching for her and pulling her out like she weighed nothing.

Isadora coughed in Kraven’s arms, holding onto him tightly.

"Are you alright?"

She nodded. "Thorn-Thornfoot he—"

"Alda!"

At Logi’s exclamation, they turned and found Thornfoot surfing away on water as his blue weaves slipped into it from his left hand.

"He’s a fucking water weaver!" Logi raged. "He planned his escape the whole time!"

Kraven’s teeth gritted as he tried to use his weaves to drag him back but a towering wave grabbed their attention.

"Oh no," Logi panicked, as it shadowed over them.

It was too late; the wave crashed into their boat and tore it apart.

The rest of everything was obscured. Isadora struggled, yet her body was hauled to the ocean depths.

Her arms thrusting, her legs whipping back and forth, but it was all pointless.

She turned her head, eyes searching around the splinters of what was left of their boats, but she couldn’t find Kraven and Logi.

Isadora panicked, forcing her body toward a direction, moving the wood out of the way. As the few seconds passed, her search became pointless, and she was running out of air.

’Where are they?’ she thought desperately. Everything happened so quickly, the wave must have separated them.

Her only option was to swim to the surface, in hopes of diving back in to keep searching, but a light distracted her.

She turned her head toward it, and her pale amber eyes caught something swimming toward her.
