Chapter 295: The medicine and the markets - II

I blinked my eyes repeatedly to get back to reality. "What happened?!"

"I-I was pulled and I was pulled here.." Dorothy mumbled, "I don’t know."

"Hush, girls." We heard a voice say and turned just in time for the person to light a lamp and make the surroundings a little bit more visible.

It was a woman, a woman of the age of Chiara.

"What Are you doing?! Why did you pull us into this room!" I hissed at the woman. I also had half a mind to slap Dorothy on the head for being pulled into the room and not at all resisting it.

The woman came near us. "I am Gina." She introduced. "I did it for your benefit because the vampires Are on a hunt."

"What?" Dorothy shrieked. "What hunt? What are you talking about?!"

"Shhh!!" Gina shushed us quite aggressively. "The vampires are all about finding their wives and they find the prettiest ones or the youngest ones. I don’t know who but they choose people!"

"What I mean is, you too need to be inside the room when they come on their regular time. We hide the girls and they stay with us for longer."

What has four she talking about? I found as I continue to think over it. I thought this was just happening inside the palace.

But I could not be more wrong about it and the grave realisation settled in.

"Wh-what," I cleared my throat before continuing, "what do you mean? How long has it been happening for?"

"Well, since the takeover." She shrugged. "don’t you worry, they don’t come inside the house so we make sure to hide all our young girls and boys inside when they come."

That must be where Sir Walter had gotten his information from. They could not come inside houses uninvited.

Since they had figured out the half of it, I did not bother correcting and pointing her towards the right statement.

"How long do we have to hide four?" I did not want to be here.

"We will know." Gina answered. "The moment the patrolling of the vampires ends, the sweet winters loudly shout out and sell their products. It is an indication that they have finally passed."

Clever.

Dorothy glanced at me and I looked away before looking at the floor. So what I had done was only helping a fragment of people that were in the same problem. They might have run away but if anyone from the palace was on patrolling, they all would be found. No matter where they were.

Soon, we heard the shouts from behind the door and Gina let us out.

"So," she stood at the door, making Dorothy and I turn around to face her once we were outside, "where are you two headed to? I don’t think I’ve seen you here before and trust me I remember a face."

Could she?

"We were—"

"I am going to search for my mother. She gave me a way." Dorothy made an awkward face before doubting her eyes around as a fee was nervous.

Why did she come up with such a lie?

"Oh!" She blinked in surprise. "don’t let me stop you then! If you need my help, just ask about my name and everyone will point you in the right direction."

"Thank you." And after that, Dorothy was pulling me towards the direction of the slums.

"Why did you lie to her?"

She casted a glance at me. "Well, you never know. You can’t just trust anyone, even though she helped us, I can’t trust her that she would lead us in our direction and not into a place where she could actually kidnap and sell us."

"True." I muttered before moving to the site and making way for the cart that brushed past us.

Everything seems to be so lively, big in this place. From the window of the palace, it seemed so small yet so far away. Being in the middle of the capital with people walking in all directions and carts with big horses coming towards me without any care made me realise what kind of different world was going on.

It was scary, to be honest. It was truly scary.

We had to walk out of the capital to reach inside the slums. The moment we entered, some kind of shiver ran down my spine by looking at it. The quality of living has decreased very low. The people sitting outside in tattered clothes with the haunted look in their eyes scared me to my very soul. They were hungry and they were not just hungry for food was what I could tell by looking at them at one go.

Dorothy held on to my hand very tightly and we were practically joined together from side to side as we moved our way inside. They actually had directions to the healers written and it was convenient for us to find him.

"They probably don’t even want to talk to the rich. That’s why they have the directions written." Dorothy whispered into my ear and I nodded. "whatever you do, do not engage in eye contact and do not talk to any of them unless you want to ask for directions."

"Got it."

I had known earlier that getting medicine for Mrs Walter was going to be the stuff, I might have not involved myself in the situation. Sir Walter was a better option for this. At least what would happen with me would never happen with him.

We went deeper into the slums, the house became more empty as we reached inside them. Maybe they all had gone to work. This area must be inhabited with the servants in the local households.

"There it is," Dorothy pointed towards a house that had two people standing in front of it. "Sir Walter definitely brought us on time. I don’t think it just has a line of two people waiting for it only."

He definitely did. Standing behind the two people, I got my eyes on the ground. There was no need for me to look into the eyes of anyone in a place where everyone could hurt us.

I sighed, Wait was all I could do for today.
