Chapter 253: The King’s verdict - I

Once the dress was selected we were done for the day and it was enough for me to be let go of. I did not know what kind of dress the aunt would choose for me but by the looks of it, I was not going to know it anytime soon.

Solomon and Bert were not following me and I knew that yet I could not help but turn around and check again and again.

I do not know why but there was this constant feeling of being watched yet I always found no one to be there.

I had to know what they were doing with Olivia and if Tristan was going to announce the verdict, he was going to do it publicly. From what Solomon said, they were tired of this human intervention with their beloved’s so it was obvious that Tristan would do it publicly and if he was going to do it publicly there was only one place where he could make it Grand and he could make a statement.

It was going to be the Grand courtroom.

Aimlessly walking in the hallway, I slowed my pace as I acknowledged the fact that I could not enter The Grand courtroom and attend the verdict. Tristan would find me in no time. I have to find someone who knows one spot in the Grand courtroom from where I could attend and not be caught.

I made my way to the library, a much smaller one than the royal library, the only man that could help me without any motive in his mind.

The moment I opened the doors of the library sir Walter stood in front of me holding a book.

The men look at me with wide eyes before blinking them and keeping the book in its place.

"Your Highness," he said with a bow, "forgive me, I was not expecting you."

I gave a shake of the head at that. "You don’t need to say it like that, Sir Walter. You never know that I do not hold any kind of title—"

"On the contrary," he interrupted me and started to walk further into the library making me follow, "the mark on your neck states something completely in contrast to that. It does not state that you are a princess anymore but a queen."

A Queen. One could only wonder how much I wanted to be that back in the day but now I was barely surviving.

"I need to go to the Grand courtroom but without anyone knowing," I told him and completely ignored what he had said earlier. "I need to see Tristan announcing his verdict about a human girl. She is a maid in the castle and her name is Olivia."

"Is it?" Sir Walter sighed and turned to me. We now stood in between two rows of books that were double the height we had.

"Your highness you must understand if anyone, ever, tries to bring you to any kind of harm not only with that person be beheaded, there is a sequence of torture that could be brought upon that person."

It took me a small moment to understand what he said but I nodded.

"I have a wife, your highness. All my life I was busy in the court with your mother which is why I could not give her the family she desired. Now all we have is our world in this library and I cannot..." he gulped, "I cannot abandon her in the quest of The throne that is long lost."

Is a throne long-lost?

"But I just need to find a door to the Grand courtroom that would let me hear everything b-but won’t have me seen!" I raised my voice a little. He was not understanding where I wanted to go.

He sighed and this time turned his eyes to the ground. "It would be dangerous and I’m not going to lie to you about that. If the king is not involving you there, then it is a clear statement that he does not want you to be there."

I huffed. When was I ever going to be involved in anything when it came to this vampire family?

"I just need to be there." I had to be but Sir Walter did not look convinced by that reason. "I need to see for myself what they do to that girl." Because if it was something he did something I could never stand then the small bottle that my sister had sent me would be put to great use.

He began to walk again and I followed him. "The humans that you talked of opposed the vampires. If a new rule begins with the overthrow of the previous one then there are rumors about their existence and their origin. The vampires do not like it when their loved ones hear them and believe them."

He turned to the side and continued, "they are at the end of their wits which is why they have decided to start managing people that openly bad mouth them."

"But there isn’t anything bad about that," I argued. "Many royalties do that. Kings and Queens do not like to hear anyone bad-mouthing about them and that is punishable by law."

I saw his head nod. "True, true." He muttered tiredly.

Looking at him walking so slowly and with the slouch on his shoulders made me feel concerned for him. "Sir Walter, are you alright?"

He chuckled. "Old age is the biggest enemy one can have." He answered. "For me, it has already begun, and doing the shows of the library does not help. However, it does keep me busy so I am thankful for it as well."

I wondered how cruel good fate could be to someone. Sir Walter had once held the highest honor in court by being the Queen’s secretary but here he was working in a small library instead of enjoying his retirement.

Sir Walter stopped walking and I stopped too. "I will help you," that made me smile as he turned around, "but I cannot be with you. I have to take care of my wife."

Even if it felt bad, I nodded. I would take anything given to me here.
