Chapter 189: A play for the throne - I

~• Royal Palace of Melenmore •~

Catherine had left the palace and that had been one of my major priorities. Now I could focus on the game of politics and the survival of the kingdom. At the back of my mind I knew that she won’t be a problem and she was safe as well.

I huffed in tiredness.

Everything was Chaos and I could not see anything clear anymore. Sometimes I envied my sisters. But just as lucky they were also just as stupid. Genevieve was never meant to be a thorn in my way. If there was one competition that I had, then that was with Catherine. Now I had even sent Catherine away and I was going to manipulate the situation in my own favor.

I lazily combed my hair. It was the only thing that brought come to my racing mind. It was not even dawn yet and I was awake. Sleep was one of the last matters on my mind.

I had too much to do and I have very less time.

"Princess Estelle," Taria entered and stood behind me, "The king is awake."

Good.

I stood up and on my way out grabbed a Lantern. I have really walked towards catherines room and that made me breathless. In her room I ran around a few times and that had me heave even more than before.

Now I ran out of the room to the hallway with the king’s chambers only to come in face-to-face with him. "Father . ." I whispered as the fear displayed itself on my face as clear as day.

He frowned as soon as he saw me. It did not go unnoticed by him as I saw him taking in my appearance in my night dress. "Estelle, are you in your right state of mind?! What sort of behaviour is this?"

"Father. . " I pressed my hand to my mouth as I was breathing heavily, "I-I went to check on Catherine but you won’t believe what I found."

"What is it?" He barked, his eyes narrowed at me. Once they used to scare me and now why did not feel anything.

"She. . " I gulped in hesitance, "she is not there." I revealed in a small whisper but I knew that he heard it.

A father’s use would never miss such words.

His eyes widened as he took in my words. "What?" He muttered before his eyes blazed in anger. "What is that supposed to mean? Where is Catherine, ask her lady in waiting!" His voice thundered across the halls as he did not wait for anyone and marched down to the room of Catherine on his own.

I followed behind him and stood there in silence as I watched him turn everything upside down in search of my sister. He went into every room and even the one used for the baths to find if he was here or not.

I sighed silently. She was not here and she was not coming back until I told her too.

"Father," I softly spoke, letting him know that I still felt fearful of what might happen, "Do you think that we should check the Palace grounds? Catherine and her lady in waiting, might have gone out for a walk for all we know."

His head turned to me immediately and I lowered my eyes. He stepped closer and from my lower eyesight I could see his feet in front of me. "No one," he hissed, "no one is to know about this except for the two of us. If she does not appear tomorrow at breakfast we will decide what to do. Do you understand?"

I nodded my head immediately. "Yes, I do." I understood clearly.

He side steped me and before I knew it, he was gone. His stomping could be heard as he walked away.

I sighed slowly and straightened my shoulders as I walked into the room and pick up one of Catherine’s intimate garments.

There was difference between the governments of a concubine and those of a princess. One could tell by looking that is was made of the most luxurious cloth ever found.

I work towards the room of Augustus. I knew that man would never be in his own chambers. As a prince that boy would go to sleep with anyone he could point to be willing. So he would probably be in a maid’s chamber.

This was another opportunity for me.

Taria gave me my robs and I was dressed once again for the public eye. For my father I appeared to be released dressed because I was a sister that was just checking on the younger one. Here, I was a princess.

There were gaurds standing in front of the room that the young Prince stayed in. I stop two steps in front of them and they bowed in front of me.

"Is the prince inside?" I pointed to the door as I asked them the question. Soldiers that would stand in front of the room of the royal family member after No if they were inside or not and even if they were a change in post they would be informed by the previous one.

They shook their head but appeared to not believe them and look doubtful at the information they gave me.

"What?" I frowned. "That cannot be right." I open the door and moved in and smiled just as I saw the empty bed.

He was not here. He had not been here for tonight.

I threw garment near the side of the bed. One could clearly see it if one wanted to look for it.

And I was sure that one was going to look for this.

I walked out of the room and taken to the gaurds with the worried expression, "inform me as soon as the The Prince returns."

They nodded, "Yes, your highness."

I turned around and Taria followed me. Two tasks in one night were done. Now all I have to wait for tomorrow for the cards that I had laid out to unfold in front of everyone.
