Chapter 656: Chapter 656: Can’t Defy Fate

The light was a bit dim, but Jiang Han could still see Aunt Su’s appearance.

Her hair was a tangled mess, as if it hadn’t been combed or washed for some time.

The clothes on her body also gave off a dirty look, a far cry from her former exquisite beauty.

As she approached, Jiang Han caught a whiff of a stench, and his stomach churned, nearly making him vomit.

Aunt Su quickly noticed her son covering his nose, seeming as if he was about to throw up. She stepped back in a panic, "Is the smell too much for you?"

She lowered her head in embarrassment, "There is no well in this courtyard. It took a lot of pleading before they begrudgingly got me some water to wash up."

Jiang Han waved it off, "It’s fine."

He strode into the room, where a wooden table stood, topped with a coarse pottery teapot, several cups, and an oil lamp.

Jiang Han looked disdainfully at the two chairs. Aunt Su followed him in and said with a flattering tone, "The chairs are clean; I wipe them every day."

Jiang Han sat down. Aunt Su dragged her chair a little farther away, sat down, and asked, "Did the Duke send you?"

Jiang Han nodded.

Aunt Su looked a bit pleased, "Is he going to release me?"

Jiang Han looked at his mother, slowly shook his head, "The Su Mansion in the Capital City was raided, revealing silver worth millions. The whole family of your elder uncle has been imprisoned and sentenced to exile three thousand miles away, and they will set off for Yazhou in the next few days."

Aunt Su’s face turned pale. Yazhou is in the far south of the Great Chu Dynasty, reputed to be rife with miasma and poisonous creatures, where survival is a matter of luck.

Her lips trembled, "Jiangnan, what about your maternal grandfather’s family?" 𝒻𝘳𝘦𝘦𝘸ℯ𝒷𝘯𝘰𝑣ℯ𝑙.𝘤𝑜𝘮

Jiang Han’s cheek twitched a bit, "They were raided as well."

"Silver has been entirely escorted to the Capital City today. Over two million in silver has been all deposited into the Ministry of Revenue’s silver vault."

Aunt Su’s face turned even paler, completely devoid of any color.

Jiang Han continued, "Your maternal grandparents, second uncle’s family, third uncle’s family, and all the cousins have all been imprisoned. Now, they should be heading to Yazhou as well."

Aunt Su covered her face, tears silently streaming down through her fingers.

Jiang Han closed his eyes, "Mother, can you tell me what happened? How did such a calamity suddenly befall us?"

"The government’s judgment only stated that the Su Family bribed officials."

"Ha, bribing officials! Which official in the Great Chu Dynasty doesn’t take bribes? What kind of reason is that!"

"There must be more to this story!"

Aunt Su released her hands, letting the tears flow down her face, slowly raised her head to look at Jiang Han, "All of this is for you."

"To ensure that you would become the Princely Heir, I gave the Duke something that made him unable to have children."

"That’s why there haven’t been any children born in the Duke Mansion for the past twenty years."

"The Duke found out about it some time ago, so all of this is his revenge."

Jiang Han shuddered violently, suddenly shouting, "Don’t say it was for me!"

"You did it for yourself and the Su Family!"

"Besides, what use was all you did?!"

"It’s your fault that you didn’t kill that bastard child twenty years ago! If you had, you, me, and the Su Family wouldn’t be in this predicament today."

Aunt Su pressed her lips tightly, then said after a while, "I did my best."

"This is fate, I can’t compete with fate."

Jiang Han suddenly stood up, shouting in fury, "I refuse to accept fate!"

"Why am I just a lesser-born son, why can’t the position of Young Master be mine!"

"I’m not willing, I—"
