Chapter 88: The Count’s Convoy Returns. Part-5.

City of Ilma, The Main Street.

Today the city of Ilma’s main street was covered in decorations and cleaned spotless.

The main street that led straight to the core of the city and the mansion of the count had numerous red carpets laid down, and on both sides a line of soldiers standing side by side was assembled to control the crowd.

On the main entrance gate, there were dozens of soldiers and knights, quite a few of whom were Pathwalkers, were standing straight like spears with their chests puffed out in pride.

Hundreds of thousands of people were standing on either side of the red carpet, and some were even gathered on the tall house’s rooftop on both sides of the street.

All this commotion was happening because the Count, the current ruler of the city of Ilma, was going to return today!

And all this arrangement was made to welcome him by Zeil and the subordinates of the Ilma family.

"You have really outdone yourself this time... to think you would spend so much effort in arranging such an exaggerated welcome scene..."

With a teacup in his hand, Alex leaned against the railing of the rooftop of a very tall house located near the main street.

"Well, it was your idea to make it as exaggerated as possible... I just executed it..."

Zeil shrugged his shoulders as he looked at the street below with a smile.

"We have been preparing for this for the entire previous month... although the church has become famous and a lot of unrest has been created in the city, the real battle will begin only after today..."

Hearing Zeil’s words, Alex smirked a bit as he replied, 𝗳𝗿𝐞𝕖𝘄𝗲𝕓𝗻𝚘𝚟𝕖𝐥.𝚌𝕠𝕞

"Don’t worry, the count will lose this battle as he’s already running very late and have no preparation time compared to us..."

Alex and Zeil were planning and conspiring in the dark while the count was in the light, and oftentimes, the people conspiring in the dark have a bigger advantage.

"Today’s welcome event is supposed to be exaggerated on purpose too; this is just one of our many traps..."

"I am actually looking forward to how will your father react to this trap and his reaction will determine our future course of planning..."

At Alex’s words, Zeil looked at the distant main gate of the city and spoke in a calm voice,

"My Father’s been the ruler of this city for a long while; just because we have had the advantage of preparing early, don’t underestimate him..."

"He’s not been in the position of power for so long in vain; he might have some tricks up his sleeve too..."

"But it’s also possible that his trump cards might have decreased after he showed off in front of the church of the goddess to impress them..."

Alex nodded his head at Zeil’s words and replied,

"I see. Let’s be careful then; we will erode his control over the city away slowly with one wave after another..."

Zeil nodded his head, put the teacup away, and put his coat on as he got ready to leave.

"This house is the tallest in the city; you can watch the entire welcome ceremony from here without any worry of others noticing you..."

"Just don’t stare too much at the powerful Pathwalkers and you will be fine... I need to be present to welcome the count so I should head to the mansion now..."

Alex waved his hand to say farewell as he spoke in his usual arrogant voice.

"Use the channels of the organization to contact me after the count returns, as we can’t meet as frequently as now after he comes back..."

"It would be better not to reveal that we both are connected and are working with each other to conspire against him until the very end..."

Zeil agreed to Alex’s advice right away and left with a happy smile and an excited look on his face as if he couldn’t wait to see the helpless look on the count’s face.

Looking at the departing back of Zeil, Alex took a sip of the tea and thought to himself,

’This fellow is too hell-bent on making his father and his brother’s life a mess... I wonder why he hates them so much?...’

Currently Alex had no channels that could help him find the reason behind Zeil’s source of hatred towards his own father and brother.

’This level of hate... this is not just about money and property... he’s got some kind of grudge against them... but he’s too guarded against me so I can’t find it as of yet...’

Zeil is a very cunning and cautious person; he never meets Alex without his loyal knights and never lets his guard down even when conversing with Alex.

’Is it because he’s too afraid of me?... well, I caused quite a few innocent civilians to die in the colosseum a few days ago...’

’Perhaps he got terrified of that plan and thus likes to maintain a bit of distance from me... but oh well, it’s not like I care about his feelings... all I need is my own share of money and profits...’

Zeil wanted the position of the count and a way of survival, and Alex wanted money and popularity; their goals didn’t restrict each other, and their ’Paths’ were also completely different.

Thus, they could cooperate without worry; as long as Zeil does not try to do something foolish, Alex won’t do anything to him either, and they will just mind their own business.

*DING!* *DONG!!* *DING!!* *DONG!!*

Just when Alex was busy thinking about various things in his mind, the sound of a giant bell ringing loudly spread throughout the entire city of Ilma.

"They are here..."

Hearing the bell, Alex understood that this was a signal to tell the entire city that the count had returned and was about to enter the city.

Alex sipped his tea as he hurriedly looked towards the main gate with a smirk on his face.

’You really took your sweet time, Count Foley... I hope you won’t disappoint me too much~’
