Chapter 91 - 090: It was me who pushed her

Shi Wei quickly grabbed his arm and helped him up, letting him shift all his weight onto himself: "It's okay, I'll carry you inside."

"But... I'm really heavy." Shi Yin cried even harder.

He regretted eating so much, fearing his brother would resent him for it.

"Don't worry, I can carry you."

Urged repeatedly by Shi Wei, Shi Yin finally hesitantly climbed onto his back.

The snow in the yard wasn't very deep, but with the weight of the two of them combined, the route became increasingly difficult to traverse.

Every step left deep imprints in the white snow.

Resting against Shi Wei's back, Shi Yin looked at everything around him. His warm, glowing heart melted away all the coldness the city had brought him in that moment.

Day by day, Shi Wei and Shi Yin's bond grew closer. They lived carefree lives, accompanying and growing alongside each other.

But those joyful days were shattered when another girl appeared.

When Shi Yin turned six, Shi Beiming brought home a young woman and a girl with braided hair: "Little Wei, Little Yin, from today on, you'll have a little sister."

Shi Wei glanced at the girl before pointing at the woman beside her: "Who is she?"

He had overheard the driver mention that Shi Beiming was seeing a woman, but he hadn't wanted to believe it. Now, faced with the reality, he had no choice but to accept it.

Shi Beiming hesitated for a moment, then turned to the gentle-smiling woman beside him and slowly said: "She's my wife, and also your mother."

"My mother is dead!" Shi Wei yelled, his eyes rimmed with red.

His mother had died of severe bleeding in the hospital bed after giving birth to his brother when he was only one year old.

"Little Wei, calm down." Shi Beiming crouched down to talk to him, but before he could get a word out, Shi Wei's next question stopped him cold.

Shi Wei turned to Shi Yaoyu, his tears blurring his vision: "Is she your child?"

Shi Beiming took a deep breath: "Yes, she's also your sister."

His words struck Shi Wei like a knife cutting relentlessly into his heart.

Filled with extreme disappointment, Shi Wei said nothing more. He cast a deep glance at the three of them before running out of the hall.

Shi Yin, seeing this, set his small, serious face and ran after him, following him all the way to Shi Wei's bedroom. As soon as the door closed, the sound of sobbing filled the room.

In the two years they had lived together, it was the first time Shi Yin saw his brother cry.

Uncertain, Shi Yin squatted in a corner, lips trembling, unable to find the words to console him.

"Brother..." As the sobbing gradually subsided, Shi Yin finally gathered the courage to speak.

He wrapped his arms around Shi Wei's head, mimicking how his brother usually comforted him, and patted his back: "Brother, don't cry. Little Yin will stay with you."

Shi Wei glanced at him, seeing his little adult-like expression, and couldn't help but laugh.

Wiping away his tears, he stood up and extended a hand to Shi Yin: "The floor is cold, come on, get up."

"Brother, are you still mad?" Shi Yin tilted his head up to look at him, his eyes full of cautious concern.

Although he'd never felt parental love himself, he could sense how deeply his brother was hurting.

Shi Wei shook his head: "There's nothing to be mad about."

Though he said so, in the days that followed, he avoided interacting with the mother and daughter completely. Even when Shi Beiming spoke to him, his attitude remained indifferent, and his demeanor seemed to grow more and more distant.

Watching all of this, Shi Yin often felt troubled. While his brother treated him as warmly as ever, he wished for his brother's happiness.

Lost in thought, Shi Yin was jolted back to reality by a sharp scream.

In the yard, Shi Yaoyu stood with hands on her hips, glaring angrily at Shi Wei: "Give me back my thing!"

"You took my stuff without asking me for permission, and now you want me to give it back?" Shi Wei showed no signs of backing down, gripping the toy even tighter.

"It's mine! Give it back, or I'll tell Dad!"

"Go ahead, tell him. Let's see who Dad believes."

Shi Yaoyu's face turned red with rage. She lunged to grab the toy: "The toy is mine, Dad is mine too! You're just a bad person!"

Shi Wei stepped back to avoid her, but inadvertently got several red scratch marks on his hand as she tried to snatch it.

He frowned, enduring the pain, and the anger in his gaze toward Shi Yaoyu deepened.

Just as Shi Yaoyu advanced again, someone suddenly rushed forward and forcefully pushed her to the ground.

Shi Yin raised his tiny fists, threatening: "If you bother my brother again, watch out—I'll hit you!"

Shi Yaoyu sat on the ground and began bawling, dirt streaking her clothes and her palms turning red, making her look very pitiful.

Her cries were loud enough to bring over two adults in no time.

Shi Beiming led them to the main hall. Holding a teacup, he sat at the head seat, his gaze sweeping back and forth between Shi Wei and Shi Yin.

Just as he was about to question them, Shi Wei took a small step forward: "I pushed her."

"Brother..." Shi Yin's eyes widened as he tugged on his brother's sleeve, baffled as to why he would say such a thing.

Shi Wei turned his head and lightly shook it, signaling him to stay silent.

"Little Wei." Shi Beiming's face darkened as he began lecturing: "You're too immature. Even if Yaoyu was being naughty, she's still your sister."

Shi Wei answered softly with an "Hmm." He neither argued nor offered any explanations. And when Shi Beiming started to bring up family rules, Shi Wei proactively stepped forward and stretched out his right hand.

The cane striking his palm stung severely, but after enduring ten hits, Shi Wei's expression remained unchanged.

Standing behind him, Shi Yin's eyes had turned red, tears streaming continuously down his face. The guilt weighing on him made it impossible to raise his head.

"Brother, I'm sorry." As soon as Shi Beiming left, Shi Yin neatly placed his hands behind his back, appearing like a child acknowledging his own mistake.

Shi Wei suppressed the pain in his palm and smiled at him: "You're my little brother; it's what I should do."

To him, it was only natural for the older brother to take responsibility for the younger sibling's mistakes.

That belief was ingrained in him ever since Shi Yin entered the Shi Family.

Shi Wei's words made Shi Yin burst into tears again.

Simply being able to eat well and live warmly in this home had already been a stroke of luck for him, let alone finding someone who treated him like a true younger brother.

Shi Wei handed him a tissue: "We're boys; we're not supposed to cry."

"Okay, I won't cry anymore." Shi Yin wiped away his tears and held Shi Wei's hand: "Brother, does it hurt?"
