Chapter 382: Chapter 374: The Request

After Dong Boyun knelt down, she spoke of her thoughts about retreating to a temple for recuperation.

Mrs. Wang Sr.’s expression changed dramatically. "What’s happening here? Why does she want to go to a temple for recuperation? Explain to me what is going on between you and Brother Wen. I’ve already told you, our Wang Family is not unkind. If there are any grievances, you can express them directly. How could you have such thoughts? What would others think of our Wang Family if you do this?"

"Daughter-in-law knows that making such a decision puts you in a difficult position, but after all, I’ve just had a miscarriage, and I feel very guilty. I only blame myself for not being careful and not taking care of the child properly, so I want to go to the temple to recuperate, as it would also be a form of blessing for the child."

Mrs. Wang Sr., however, didn’t want to hear more and interrupted her directly, "You don’t need to say any more, I’ve already told you this is impossible. Whatever reason or excuse you have, I will not agree with this idea. You’ve just had a miscarriage, so go back and rest."

Mrs. Wang Sr. was evidently angry and waved her hand to dismiss her. Dong Boyun said no more, stood up, and left.

After sending Dong Boyun away, Mrs. Wang Sr. directly asked someone to get her son back. Wang Wen, unaware of what was happening, returned to find his mother with a stern face, and as he opened his mouth to speak, Mrs. Wang Sr. slapped the table.

"What’s going on between you and Mrs. Dong? She came to me today and said she wants to go to a temple. What’s happening between you two? I tell you, our Wang Family has always been stable, with no nonsense. If you’re hiding anything from me, and I find out, I won’t forgive you." Mrs. Wang Sr. felt that her son must have had an affair, which led to this situation with the daughter-in-law.

Though she was pleased her daughter-in-law didn’t come to complain, her attitude still angered Mrs. Wang Sr. After all, polygamy was common, though the Wang Family did not approve. Nonetheless, she believed if Wang Wen had an affair, he wouldn’t dare bring it home. So why now?

Wang Wen was startled by his mother’s words. "I really don’t know about this, mother. Don’t worry, I’ll go and ask her what’s going on."

"I’m not asking you to go back and take it out on her. Our Wang Family has always been stable, and you should not cause trouble. I think your wife is quite good, and now that she’s had a miscarriage, her mind is preoccupied. This is the time for you to be considerate towards her. After all, what kind of problem between husband and wife requires going to a temple?" As Mrs. Wang Sr. spoke, she scrutinized her son, clearly suspecting he’d done something wrong.

Wang Wen inwardly smiled bitterly, unsure how to explain, knowing that exposing the truth would mean his mother wouldn’t accept Mrs. Dong.

After leaving his mother, Wang Wen returned to the backyard and, hearing from a servant that Madam was alone in the courtyard, pushed the door open and entered.

Dong Boyun was sitting on a couch, lost in thought. Hearing a noise, she looked up to see Wang Wen, but didn’t stand, turning instead to look out the window.

Wang Wen sat down on the other side of the couch. "If you want to go to the temple for recuperation, you can tell me directly without involving my mother and provoking her anger. Now I know about it, and I will find a proper reason to let you go to the temple. But, my dear wife, our Wang Family, unlike your Dong Mansion, values descendants highly. The Wang Family does not permit concubines, and I can’t have no heir for our family line."

As Wang Wen said this, Dong Boyun’s body trembled slightly, but he pretended not to notice and continued, "Moreover, children born of concubines are illegitimate, unable to inherit properly. So consider how to resolve this issue."

Dong Boyun lowered her head, covering her mouth with her hand, and began to cry.

Even though she’d decided to let go, the thought of Wang Wen finding another woman made her feel unbearable pain.

Seeing her like this, Wang Wen didn’t speak, instead turning to look out the window. Despite his inner turmoil, he couldn’t forgive her easily, thinking of what she had done.

"You understand, then. Either I divorce you and take another wife, or your plan to go to the temple is impractical. Decide for yourself whether to stay in the mansion or go to the temple." With those words, Wang Wen stood up and left.

After over a year together, Wang Wen had understood his wife’s nature, knowing that directly stopping her from going to the temple would result in her refusal. So, he chose a different way to keep her in the mansion.

Dong Boyun understood as well, but knew her husband would not forgive her. However, as a man of conscience, he valued their relationship and didn’t let her go to the temple out of care for that sentiment.

At that moment, Dong Boyun regretted deeply, wondering why she was so confused before. Why didn’t she share her troubles with her husband? He would surely have helped, instead of them ending up like this.

In the East Mansion, Lin Youning heard from Li Si that Dong Boyun had returned to the Dong Mansion and then to the Wang Mansion. Realizing she was fine, he nodded and dismissed the servant.

Tomorrow is Mid-Autumn Festival, and Lin Youning and the others plan to celebrate with Mrs. Gu Sr., so the mansion needn’t prepare anything special.

On Mrs. Dong’s side, after previously terrifying the child, she’d been quiet these days, but she still sent news to her mother, asking about Lin Youning’s pregnancy.

Yet no reply came from her mother, and eventually she heard news of her family’s second daughter’s miscarriage. Mrs. Dong pondered, remembering her mother had instructed someone to act, realizing the old lady might now be watching her closely.

The next day, Mid-Autumn Festival dawned, and early in the morning, Mrs. Dong heard Lin Youning and the Marquis had gone to visit Mrs. Gu Sr. Cradling her son, she observed for a while, then curled her lips.

"Prepare, let’s visit Madam. Today is Mid-Autumn, a day for family reunion."
