The Noble Lady's Rebirth: She just wants to Rest in Peace!-Chapter 274 - 275: The Pursuit
Lin Youning was dozing off, with no one to talk to, especially since the older brother beside her was also asleep. Eventually, she leaned against the big pillow and drifted off to sleep without realizing it.
When Gu Yifeng woke up, he saw the little girl beside him nodding off constantly, clearly already asleep, but still trying to hold on.
Seeing her like this, Gu Yifeng felt a bit uncomfortable. Could it be that the incident that morning made her start to guard against him?
Was he really too hasty that morning?
Gu Yifeng felt uncomfortable. Although he thought he was too hasty, seeing Sister Ning like this made him feel terrible, a feeling that was hard to describe, and for the first time in his life, his heart felt troubled, with no solution in sight.
Despite his anger, Yifeng gently sat up, carefully cradled the sleeping Sister Ning, laid her down flat, and took the small quilt from himself to cover her.
Gu Yifeng rested his head on the big pillow, turned sideways, and looked at Sister Ning in his arms.
He remembered that when Sister Ning was young, she was very timid and would hide from everyone.
But after coming to the Marquis Mansion, she became lively and playful, often playing barefoot in the Crescent River. Gu Yifeng could still recall those summer days, watching Sister Ning splash in the stream, giggling all the while.
Her smile was brighter than the summer sun.
In the blink of an eye, the little girl had grown up. Originally, he thought of her only as a sister, but who would have thought? Unknowingly, she had become ingrained in his bones and blood.
No one could understand the anger and fury in his heart when he found out Sister Ning was kidnapped. But Gu Yifeng was thankful for this incident, as it revealed to him the importance of Sister Ning and his true feelings for her.
The carriage moved swiftly, and faint voices could be heard outside, but the words were unclear due to their softness.
Gu Yifeng furrowed his brows slightly, carefully lifted the curtain, not wanting to disturb the little girl beside him, just as the carriage door outside opened.
"Marquis, Li Si and Aunt Wu from behind have caught up. Chief Steward Zhang wants to know if we should travel together or let them rest here first," said Hailan.
"Let them travel with us," Gu Yifeng replied, though puzzled, since Li Si was with them, so he didn’t ask further.
The curtain fell, and Hailan gently closed the carriage door, nodding towards Zhang Wu, who rode away towards Li Si behind them.
Although they set out together, Li Si’s group brought more items, which should have slowed them down by a few days. However, they managed to catch up today, indicating they hadn’t rested along the way.
Gu Yifeng leaned back in the carriage, understanding that this was just the beginning of the journey. He believed that in a few days, Aunt Wu’s group would be unable to keep up.
Gu Yifeng knew it was likely Aunt Wu who rushed the journey. Li Si would comply with her orders, as she was practically in charge, and no one would defy Li Si’s decisions except a superior like Aunt Wu.
Seeing Zhang Wu signaling, Li Si understood that the Marquis was aware they had caught up, so he said nothing, and the group followed the carriage.
Wu Xueqin, in the carriage, let out a quiet sigh of relief. They hadn’t stopped for lunch at the station and had hurried all the way to catch up with the Marquis.
Wu Xueqin had thought a lot on the journey. The Marquis had left her behind to spend time with Lin Youning alone, but she didn’t want this; she wanted the Marquis to see her effort in enduring the hardship.
She knew this might displease the Marquis, but she planned to feign ignorance, pretending it was just to catch up without causing trouble. Surely the Marquis wouldn’t be angry.
Inside the carriage, Yangtao wasn’t feeling so easy. She clutched her stomach, suppressing the urge to vomit, having eaten little in the morning to avoid discomfort from the bumpy ride.
At that moment, she was glad she hadn’t eaten much; otherwise, she would surely have vomited.
"The Marquis is in the carriage. They must be talking, right?" Wu Xueqin stared at the carriage ahead, finally lowering the curtain.
Yangtao didn’t respond. She knew that the Marquis and Madam were together, and anything could happen between them. She’d heard of affectionate couples indulging in intimacy on carriages.
But she dared not share such stories with her mistress.
Lin Youning slept in the carriage, oblivious, until she awoke in the evening to find herself nestled in Big Brother’s arms. He held a book, with the carriage lit by the gentle glow of twilight.
Waking up again in such an awkward setting, Lin Youning was unsure of what to do. She lay quietly, pondering whether certain occurrences would eventually lead to acceptance.
This time, waking up in Big Brother’s arms, she didn’t panic; she lay quietly, contemplating.
Lin Youning didn’t know what Big Brother thought of her. But recalling their daily interactions, he hadn’t shown any disdain, which comforted her, grateful for his care since childhood.
"We’ll reach the next station around midnight. Previously, I had someone prepare meals there. Though cold now, I’ve asked Zhang Wu to reheat them upfront. Once we arrive, we can have it and continue," a voice said from above, accompanied by the sound of flipping pages.
Lin Youning sat up. "As we head northwest, it gets colder. We should prepare more clothes, and if we travel at night, it may become unbearable?"
Whether it was waking up in such discomfort or Big Brother discussing such everyday matters, Lin Youning felt as if she wasn’t with a brother but traveling with a husband.
This illusion drained her spirit, making her feel a vague sense of loss, unsure why she longed for this moment to last while accepting they would soon return to being siblings.
Even inexplicably, a desire sprang forth, hoping this moment could last forever.
