Chapter 260: Chapter 261: Inquiry

Gu Yifeng nodded, sitting by the edge of the bed, very close to Sister Ning, their legs almost touching.

Back in Tingxue Hall at the Marquis Mansion, Lin Youning was with Big Brother, sitting with a small tea table between them while playing chess. Despite being in close contact often, they had never been this close before.

Earlier today, when Big Brother intimately helped her tuck her hair behind her ear, it was an unprecedented action. Following that, he sat so near her, making Lin Youning feel awkward, yet instinctively not wanting to move away and create distance.

She felt she must be overthinking it. She had fallen into the water, and with everything happening, Big Brother must be worried about her, that’s why he cared for her so much. How could she think otherwise?

With this thought, Lin Youning’s tense body gradually relaxed, all of which was observed by Gu Yifeng. He watched the young girl’s conflicted expression, her awkwardness, and finally her slowly relaxing body.

Gu Yifeng had never realized someone’s face could have so many expressions, even changing in an instant.

In his memories, Mrs. Dong always had a singular expression, except for once when she admitted her mistake and even confessed to him, then he saw hope on her face.

These observations lasted only a moment, as Gu Yifeng regained his composure, "I want to ask you about this matter too, why did the Eldest Prince’s people target you?"

Lin Youning lowered her head. Actually, she had already planned how to answer while asking Big Brother, "I accidentally overheard something while going out once; the Prime Minister’s Mansion is colluding with the Eldest Prince. After recognizing my grandfather, I thought I should alert him, but who would have expected? The Eldest Prince targeted me instead."

Lin Youning also knew she shouldn’t deceive Big Brother, yet didn’t know how to explain.

How could such information be overheard accidentally?

Gu Yunfeng understood that Sister Ning wasn’t being completely honest, but that didn’t matter. What mattered was the truth of the situation—otherwise, the Eldest Prince wouldn’t be in such a rush to capture Sister Ning, even considering silencing her.

The factions of the Eldest Prince and the Crown Prince at court had already reached this point, and Gu Yifeng was aware of it. What surprised him was the Prime Minister’s Mansion also siding with the Eldest Prince.

Thinking about Sister Ning being silenced made sense now.

"What to do now?" Lin Youning looked up at Big Brother, "The Eldest Prince didn’t kill me, they certainly won’t stop here. I want to visit my grandfather and inform him of this."

"Although only meeting once, I can tell Grandfather truly cares about us, or rather, he cares about Mother. I’ll tell Grandfather of today’s events, and he’ll distance himself from the Eldest Prince." Considering they even dared to attack the Prime Minister’s granddaughter, their cruelty is evident; once Chancellor Liu knows, he won’t associate with them anymore. 𝘧𝘳𝘦ℯ𝓌𝘦𝒷𝘯𝑜𝑣𝘦𝓁.𝒸𝘰𝓂

Gu Yifeng nodded, "After returning to the mansion, don’t leave. Stay inside the mansion; I’ll have someone watch over your brother, and regarding the Eldest Prince’s side, not handling you this time, it’s obvious they won’t conceal it from your grandfather anymore. This is actually good, giving your grandfather an excuse to sever ties with the Eldest Prince."

Lin Youning nodded, realizing this was indeed a blessing in disguise. Though it seemed unlikely the Eldest Prince’s side would let it go just like that.

"When I rushed from Jiangxi to the Capital, I received news from the Hidden Guard that you’d been taken. Following the marks the Hidden Guard left, I pursued to the riverside, assuming you were tied to a boat. I found a boat and searched but was a step too late. When I boarded, you had already jumped into the river. Luckily, you were unharmed." Gu Yifeng spoke of these things, his expression growing colder.

"I have no issues now." Lin Youning deeply felt, "Thank goodness Big Brother arrived promptly; otherwise, I might have lost my life without seeing Big Brother one last time."

"Alright, it’s all fine now, don’t talk about such unlucky things. I guess the Eldest Prince’s Hidden Guards are still searching around for us." Gu Yifeng’s face showed concern, "But traveling along the way, I’ve made marks. Our people seeing them should come here, making the Eldest Prince’s men wary of acting openly."

What Gu Yifeng didn’t mention was lighting a fire in the mountains late at night, and whether the smoke might attract the enemy’s attention.

This was the reason Gu Yifeng remained vigilant.

For a moment, they were both silent, only the sound of the firewood crackling could be heard from the stove.

Lin Youning wanted to make conversation, "Brother Xuan, are things over there settled? Is everyone alright, not hurt?"

Li Youning wasn’t worried about Gu Chaoxuan’s safety.

"He’s fine; when I arrived, he had already been rescued and is recovering at the mansion with Mrs. Lin taking care of him, there’s no need to worry." Gu Yifeng’s eyebrow twitched, eyes showing a hint of affection, "I’ve informed Mrs. Li you’re the Prime Minister’s granddaughter."

Lin Youning looked up, blinking innocently, then smiled knowing Big Brother was defending her in front of Mrs. Lin.

Mrs. Lin had initially exposed her identity, not wanting her as Lin Family’s daughter, intending to replace her and marry into the Marquis Mansion herself, but unexpectedly, Lin Youning luckily returned to being related to the Prime Minister’s Mansion.

"You must be tired, having been shocked and scared along the way. I’ll keep watch here, you rest for a while, tomorrow we have a long journey ahead." Gu Yifeng said with concern, patting her head gently.

Lin Youning blushed slightly, nodded, disregarding the dust on the bed, she lay down but quickly sat up again.

"Big Brother must be tired too; why not rest together? Out here, we don’t need to mind those etiquettes."

Lin Youning expected Big Brother to be courteous, but surprisingly, he didn’t say much, simply climbing onto the bed. After laying down, he placed an arm down.

"Lie here, it’ll be more comfortable." He appeared relaxed and at ease.

Seeing Big Brother so composed, she couldn’t act petty either.

Despite feeling awkward, Lin Youning lay down, hesitating to face Big Brother directly, still sensing eyes watching her closely, not daring to move.

And when an arm fell on her waist, her body tensed up all over again.
