Chapter 624: Chapter 588: She Wants to Be a Concubine in This Household (Part 2)

After a pause, Wen Wan glanced at Nanny Qin, whose face was slightly pale, "Perhaps that maid back then was too shameless, leaving a deep impression on the other servants, making everyone overly cautious. That’s why your late-night request for the master to help write a letter was misunderstood. It’s nothing to worry about, as long as it’s cleared up."

Nanny Qin’s lips trembled a bit, "Was there really such a servant in the mansion?"

"There was." Wen Wan nodded, "Later, I couldn’t take it anymore and directly sent her to prison. I heard she was punished by riding a wooden horse and died from being pierced to death."

"Pierced... pierced to death?" Nanny Qin felt chills down her limbs and her mind grew dizzy upon hearing this.

Riding the wooden horse was a punishment designed specifically for unchaste women, and its cruelty is evident.

Perhaps out of guilt, she began identifying herself with the story; the more Wen Wan spoke, the more she felt like she was that person.

Standing there for less than a quarter of an hour, cold sweat was already dripping down Nanny Qin’s back.

All along, she had thought Wen Wan was a delicate and soft-tempered woman without a mind or a temper, but who would have imagined she could be so chilling when she acted?

"Just a lowly person who doesn’t deserve to be mentioned," Wen Wan sat up, sipping tea slowly, "But Nanny Qin, your face looks so awful, are you perhaps sick?"

Nannies can’t be sick; if they are, they need medicine, and naturally, they can’t feed the children.

Nanny Qin hurriedly shook her head upon hearing this, "I’m not sick, maybe it’s just cold outside, I haven’t warmed up yet."

Wen Wan smiled contentedly, "I know you’re a careful person and certainly wouldn’t let yourself fall ill at such a crucial time. Qi Bao is about to sleep; you should take her back to the room. As for what the servants are saying, don’t let it bother you, thinking too much can be harmful."

Nanny Qin thought Wen Wan would say something about reprimanding those arrogant maids, but instead, she received that remark, feeling a surge of frustration inside.

She lowered her head, responded affirmatively, and went to the long couch to pick up Qi Bao.

The image of the maid being pierced to death on the wooden horse kept floating in her mind as Nanny Qin stepped outside; she didn’t dare look at Song Wei, as though he were the lethal wooden horse.

Qi Bao was very well-behaved today, drinking milk and starting to sleep, while Nanny Qin sat nearby, soon becoming distracted.

Song Wei hadn’t stayed up much tonight; shortly after Wen Wan laid down, he came in after turning off the lights.

Wen Wan heard his footsteps and moved further inside; she was so tired that she didn’t feel like engaging Song Wei. After he lay down, the room fell silent, and she soon fell asleep.

As Wen Wan suspected, Nanny Zhou had indeed begun to hold a grudge against Nanny Qin.

She had spent a considerable amount of effort over the past two days to find something against Nanny Qin.

So as soon as she saw the light go out in the main room, Nanny Zhou crouched down and went outside the West Wing to see what Nanny Qin was up to.

Unexpectedly, Nanny Qin just happened to push the door open and they came face to face.

Suddenly having a person standing at the doorway, Nanny Qin turned bloodless, "Sister Zhou, why are you here?"

Nanny Zhou felt extremely awkward and forced out a smile, "I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d come to see if you wanted to take a rest. I noticed your complexion hasn’t been very good these past two days."

"No need." Nanny Qin shook her head, "I’m used to the night shift, I’ll take good care of the girl."

As she spoke, she raised her head to check the position of the moon, "It’s late, Sister Zhou, you should go back to sleep. You have to relieve me early in the morning."

Nanny Zhou didn’t hurry to leave and stood at the door, "During dinner, I heard some unpleasant talk. Sister Qin, none of that is true, right?"

"What talk?"

"Someone said you asked the master for help in writing a letter, and also said... said..."

"What else did they say?" Nanny Qin frowned.

"Oh dear, it’s very unpleasant stuff, the servants gossip so, don’t let it get to you. We three entered the Song Mansion together, as Sister Qin, I know your character well. You couldn’t possibly do something as shameless as seducing the master."

Nanny Qin squeezed her fingers.

She had been wondering who could have happened to see her and Song Wei, and then exaggerated the story among the servants.

Now, seeing Nanny Zhou’s face, she was almost sure of who it was.

She forced a smile, "During the shift change, I went to Madam’s room; she also told me not to take it to heart. After all, it’s just a letter matter, not something I would be blamed for. Sister Zhou, don’t worry, I’ve done nothing disgraceful; my conscience is clear, my breath steady. I won’t stoop to the level of those gossiping maids."
