The Mind-Reading Mate: Why Is the Lycan King So Obsessed With Me?!-Chapter 494: The Duke’s Precious Daughter
[If something bad happens here, instead of blaming her, I will blame myself.] Lazarus thought bitterly. [This is our home. This is the place where my daughter should feel safe and be able to return to anytime. But how could I let danger enter this place? How could I let anything bad happen to my daughter?]
[I should have hired more guards every time she came home. Maybe I should have asked the wizards from the Magic Tower for help too.]
Truly... Primrose was speechless when she heard her father’s thoughts. Instead of thinking about his own safety while staying alone in this manor, he was thinking about her first.
How could Primrose deserve a father like him? She had never even been such a devoted daughter to him.
Sometimes, she even felt guilty. Maybe she shouldn’t ask him for money so often. But Lazarus loved buying her beautiful and expensive things, and whenever she tried to refuse, he would look sad.
In that case, she would still ask him for money.
"Father..." Primrose looked at him with tear-filled eyes. "I was really scared." Her voice broke. Tears fell down her cheeks as she cried again. Without hesitation, Lazarus pulled her into his arms.
"I thought... I thought I would never see you again," she whispered.
She didn’t say that only because of what had just happened in the manor, but it was also because of her past life.
Back then, Rose had watched Zarius die right in front of her.
She must have been so scared, and she must have lived for many years thinking that she would never be able to meet again the only father she truly loved.
That thought still hurts, even now.
[Something is wrong with my wife.]
Primrose froze in Lazarus’s arms when she heard Edmund’s thoughts. Honestly, she had even forgotten for a moment that her husband was standing right behind Lazarus.
He was so quiet that his presence almost faded into the background.
[I know she’s scared because of that strange man, but Leofric wouldn’t come to Illvaris for no reason,] Edmund thought. [If he came here himself just to save my wife... then something really terrible must have happened to her.]
His thoughts were filled with worry. For a moment, Edmund was completely lost in his own mind, so when he accidentally met Primrose’s eyes, he jolted slightly and realized that she had been listening to everything in his mind.
Sooner or later, Primrose knew she would have to tell Edmund what she had just gone through. And right now, she was thinking hard about whether she should tell Lazarus about it as well or not.
Lazarus was an important person in this matter, so it felt strange not to include him in the discussion.
But at the same time, Primrose was afraid that this kind of problem might burden his mind. Her father was already old, and sometimes he could get sick if he became too stressed. That was why she wasn’t sure if he could handle it.
"Rosie?" Lazarus called his daughter’s name when he noticed that Primrose had become unusually quiet and her body had grown tense. "What’s wrong? Are you still scared? Don’t worry, I’m here now, so no one will be able to hurt you."
[If that bastard dares to come back again, I’ll beat him with my cane!] Lazarus thought with full confidence, as if his weak body could really fight someone who was able to cover the entire manor with magic.
"No, I’m just... tired," Primrose said as she wiped the tears from her cheeks. Her voice was soft, and a little weak, making Lazarus feel even more sorry for her.
"Tired? Come, come, let’s sit down first." Lazarus gently let go of her and guided her toward the bed. He helped her sit down before sitting beside her himself.
His movements were careful, as if she might break if he wasn’t gentle enough.
Meanwhile, Edmund stood right next to Primrose, near the bedpost, staying so alert that he looked like a soldier on duty, guarding the precious queen of his kingdom.
"Do you want me to call the doctors to check on you?" Lazarus asked with worry written all over his face. "Or are you hungry? I can ask the cooks to make your favorite food right away. I can even let you eat something spicy today, if you want."
His voice was full of care, and full of love, so Primrose couldn’t help but let out a small laugh.
Primrose shook her head lightly. "No need," she said softly. "I’m really fine. Sir Leofric said I just need a little rest."
Seeing her smile, even though it was weak, Lazarus finally relaxed a little. "That’s good." He patted the back of her hand several times. "That’s really good."
"But even though I don’t really need a doctor right now, I still need you here." She leaned to the side and rested her head on Lazarus’s shoulder. "If you’re not busy, can you stay here with me, Father?"
"Why are you acting so polite like that?!" Lazarus looked at her with a confused expression. "Of course I’ll stay here with you! There is nothing in this world more important than my daughter!"
[Usually, if she wants something, she will just say it directly, or she will even force me!]
Lazarus frowned deeply. [What the hell did that man do to my daughter to make her act so polite toward her father like this?! Edmund didn’t even give me any explanation when we came back here!]
[The only thing he said was that a strange man had entered my manor and hurt my daughter!]
In truth, Edmund was also confused.
How could he explain anything to Lazarus when he himself didn’t know what had really happened?
"My wife..." Edmund called softly. His voice was so gentle that it made her heart tremble. She turned her head toward him without lifting it from Lazarus’s shoulder.
"Yes?" Primrose replied.
Edmund reached for her other hand and then knelt on the floor. He looked at her with deep love and said, "My wife, I’m so sorry." 𝐟𝕣𝕖𝐞𝐰𝕖𝚋𝐧𝗼𝚟𝐞𝕝.𝗰𝐨𝐦
His eyelids drooped slightly, making his face look pitiful. Before Primrose could say anything, he continued, "Because of the magic blockade, I found out that you were in danger too late."
Primrose finally realized that her husband was also just as worried about her as her father was. She slowly moved away from her father’s shoulder and then wrapped her arms around Edmund. She hugged him so tightly that he thought she wanted to become one with him.
"It wasn’t your fault." Primrose breathed in his scent, and her chaotic mind slowly became calmer.
It was a little strange, though. She had hugged Lazarus just as tightly before, but for some reason, her body relaxed much more and even started to feel sleepy when she hugged her husband.
Could it be that they had also met in her previous life?
When Nina destroyed the old music box, Primrose saw someone giving that music box to her and saying that her father didn’t want anything unholy to enter the temple.
Since she knew Lazarus would never forbid something as trivial as that, she realized that the "father" she mentioned back then was probably the Cardinal.
In other words, she had also met Edmund when she grew up in her previous life. But unfortunately, she didn’t know what kind of ending they had back then.
Looking at their current life, Primrose guessed that their previous life had been bad, perhaps even worse than her second life, when she was poisoned by her own doctor and thought that Edmund always ignored her.
Now she wanted to know their past story, but at the same time, she was afraid to learn about it.
To have a sweet life like they had now, they had probably gone through hell and countless hardships in their previous life.
"What’s wrong?" Edmund gently stroked her back and kissed her temple. "Is there something you want to tell me? Maybe about the things you faced while I was gone."
"Not now..." Primrose buried her face in the hollow of his neck and slowly closed her eyes. "I feel really... really sleepy."
She wasn’t making excuses or trying to run away from the topic. She truly felt sleepy.
It was probably because seeing the fragments of her past life memories had drained her energy. Besides, she felt as if she had stayed inside those memories for months, so it was no wonder her body felt so tired and sleepy.
"But don’t go..." Primrose let Edmund support her weight as she sank into his embrace. "I don’t want to be alone. It’s really scary."
Edmund’s heart tightened when he heard her words.
He wrapped his arms around her even more firmly, as if he was afraid she might disappear if he loosened his hold even a little.
"I’m not going anywhere," he said softly. "I’m right here. You’re safe now, my wife."
