Chapter 207: The Weight of a First Kill

"I’m sorry." Primrose clung to Edmund’s arm, her head still bowed after throwing up. She turned her eyes away, unable to look at the mess she had made. It made her feel sick all over again. "I’m really sorry about this."

"Why are you apologizing?" Edmund guided her gently to the nearest garden bench, then crouched beside her, carefully wiping her mouth with a handkerchief.

Primrose took the handkerchief from him and dabbed her lips herself. "Don’t you think it’s kind of ridiculous? Throwing up just because I saw someone die? It’s not even the first time I’ve watched someone die right in front of me."

She did feel nauseous when she saw someone die before her, but this time, the feeling was different. It was hard for her to explain, but it felt more revolting, like something was churning violently inside her stomach.

And even though she was glad Thevan was finally gone for good, there was a strange weight sitting in her chest, ike someone had placed a giant stone in her heart.

Edmund spoke in a low voice, "But ... have you ever seen someone die because you were the one who killed them?"

Primrose’s entire body froze when she heard that. After thinking for a moment, she finally realized that this was the result of taking someone’s life.

"I ... I’ve never killed anyone before." Primrose lowered her head, wanting to say that she didn’t technically kill Thevan, but she knew it would be pointless because Edmund already knew about her mind-control ability.

She whispered, "This is my first time."

"I know." Edmund held her hands, looking straight into her eyes. "That’s why I never wanted you to dirty your hands with ... killing." He gently patted her hands, trying to soothe her. "It’s always hard the first time." freeweɓnovel~cѳm

Maybe she didn’t physically harm Thevan. But the truth was, she still made it happen.

"I’m sorry," she said again.

Edmund furrowed his brow. "Why are you apologizing again?"

"I should’ve told you first before doing something like that." She looked down, nudging a small rock with the tip of her shoe. "But honestly, I didn’t intend to kill him. I didn’t even know my ability would work on him twice. It actually ... scares me a little."

She still wondered what might happen if she accidentally used her mind-control ability and ended up hurting someone else.

After all, powers as great as hers always come with a heavy price.

Primrose wasn’t even sure if the misery she had endured in her first life was enough to pay for the blessings she had received in this one.

"No one gets things right the first time," Edmund said. "Sometimes you’ll make a few mistakes, whether big or small. But without those mistakes, you’ll never truly understand how to control something this powerful."

Primrose whispered, "But mistakes ... I can’t afford to make mistakes with this ability. What if I accidentally kill someone? That kind of mistake ... it’s something that can’t be undone."

Edmund sighed softly. "I won’t lie and say it’s impossible. You might make that kind of mistake someday. But my wife, something as powerful as your gift isn’t meant to be wielded without risk. A power like yours will always come with danger."

He reached out and gently cupped her cheek. "But you’re not alone in this. You have me. Whatever happens, we’ll face it together."

Primrose murmured, "But what if I lose control? What if I end up hurting someone I care about?"

"Then we’ll deal with it together," Edmund said firmly. "I’d rather see you try and make a few mistakes than watch you let fear hold you back. Besides, didn’t Sir Leofric promise to help you learn how to control your ability?"

"He did." Primrose took a deep breath. "You’re right. I shouldn’t let fear consume me."

She fell silent for a moment before turning to face her husband. "What about you? Were you ... scared, too? The first time you killed someone?"

People always said the mighty Lycan King had taken countless lives with his own hands. But even for someone like him ... there had to be a first time.

He might seem strong now, like nothing bothered him when he killed someone. But what about back then? Back before he became the mighty Lycan King?

"My first kill was ... different." Edmund’s eyes dimmed, like the memories returning to his mind were too painful to bear. "It wasn’t fear that consumed me at the time. It was ... anger."

Fragments of memories floated through his mind like scattered puzzle pieces. He didn’t say much, and because of that, Primrose couldn’t fully piece everything together right away.

"Anger toward who?" she asked softly.

"Myself." Edmund closed his eyes for a moment and clenched his jaw. "I was angry at myself for killing them."

Primrose didn’t ask who he had killed. Instead, she asked something even more important. "How old were you, Edmund?"

"Three ... maybe four? I’m not exactly sure. I don’t really remember it clearly."

Primrose held her breath, stunned into stillness. She didn’t even blink.

What the hell was she doing at the age of four? Oh ... she was throwing tantrums at her father because he refused to buy her another dollhouse, and feeling betrayed when he said she already had thirty of them in her room.

Meanwhile, Edmund had already taken someone’s life at that age.

Primrose finally realized just how big the gap between them was, not just in race, but in their lives, their childhoods, the worlds they grew up in.

No wonder they had such a hard time understanding each other. Without her mind-reading ability, she might never have truly understood him.

"Oh ..." Edmund tensed up when he saw the shock on Primrose’s face. "I’m sorry ... I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have told you that."

[What the hell was I thinking?! Why did I tell her something so horrible?!]

[She probably thinks I’m a monster now—No, let’s be honest. I am a monster from the beginning.]

[What if she hates me now? What if this ruins everything?]

[Things have been going so well between us lately. That’s probably why ... I got too comfortable. I let my guard down and ended up saying something I should’ve kept hidden.]

His pupils darted in panic. "Maybe ... maybe I should go now."
