Chapter 350 -227

Shen Jingxiu was awakened by a series of jingling and clanging noises.

Actually, the noise wasn’t that loud, but his sleep had been rather light these past two days, so the slightest sound would rouse him.

Reaching for his phone on the bedside table, he discovered it was only just past five in the morning.

At five o’clock in winter, the sky outside was still dark, and it was abnormal for such noises to be coming from the house at that hour.

He got out of bed and descended the stairs, following the sounds to the kitchen.

Before he had even reached the doorway, he spotted a slender figure busy at work.

Obviously, that silhouette didn’t belong to Mrs. Zhang, nor to any of the house’s other servants.

It belonged to Wenyan!

But why was she up so early, cooking in the kitchen?

Shen Jingxiu felt puzzled and hastened his step.

“Wenyan, what are you doing here?”

As Shen Jingxiu approached from behind, Wenyan was concentrating deeply on slicing tomatoes.

Startled by the sudden voice overhead, she almost threw her knife.

“Big Brother!” Wenyan turned abruptly, “You scared me to death! Why don’t you make any noise when you walk?”

Shen Jingxiu nodded toward the range hood with a lift of his chin, “I do make noise when I walk, but the fan is too loud. I was about to ask you the same thing. It’s still so early, why are you up cooking by yourself?”

She had clearly been in the kitchen for a while, with strips of beef and green peppers already prepared beside her.

“It doesn’t look like you’re making breakfast, why? There’s nothing cooking on the stove, so why turn on the range hood?”

“Uh…” Wenyan felt a bit embarrassed, “Don’t laugh at me, okay? I haven’t really used the kitchen at home much, and this stove is just too smart. I think I just waved my hand or something, and somehow it sensed it, and then the hood started up. I wanted to turn it off, but I didn’t seem to manage. Can you help me? You look like you know how.”

“…” Shen Jingxiu narrowed his eyes, “Step aside, let me take a look.”

“Okay, then I’ll go back to chopping vegetables. Thankfully, our kitchen is big enough.”

Shen Jingxiu grunted an acknowledgment and started examining the range hood.

Wenyan also answered the question he had just raised.

“What I’m making isn’t breakfast. It’s just a few of my biological mother’s favorite home-cooked dishes from before she passed away.”

“Oh?” Shen Jingxiu looked at Wenyan in surprise, “Aunt Wen passed away when you were very young, right? You shouldn’t have any memories from that time. How do you know what she liked to eat?”

Wenyan teased him a little, “Why don’t you guess?”

Shen Jingxiu furrowed his brow slightly, and after a moment of thought, he felt he had guessed the answer.

“You talked to Xu Jie, didn’t you? You asked him, right?”

“A perfect score!” Wenyan looked at Shen Jingxiu with a gleeful expression, “You sure live up to being a big brother, guessing it right away.”

Just then, Shen Jingxiu had found the switch for the hood; he turned it off, and the kitchen instantly became quiet.

“So, you’ve made your decision, haven’t you?”

The sudden stillness in the surroundings made Wenyan feel a little uncomfortable, as if the gravity of the conversation had been amplified.

But her mood was light-hearted.

“Yes, I’ve figured out what to do, and I’m no longer fretting at all.”

“Can you tell me about it?”

“Well…, but it’s not a good time to say it now because the final outcome will only come after I meet with Xu Jie. I’ll tell you when I get back, okay?”

“You’ve arranged to meet him?”

Shen Jingxiu asked, glancing again at the vegetables in Wenyan’s hands, “So, are these dishes for him as well?”

“NO,” Wenyan exaggeratedly frowned at Shen Jingxiu, “Didn’t I just tell you? They’re for my mom. But I did indeed arrange to meet him in the cemetery. Preparing a few of my mom’s favorite dishes is for visiting her.”

However, hearing this, Shen Jingxiu’s brows furrowed even more.

“This early, you’ve arranged to meet him at the cemetery?”

Wenyan nodded, “Yes, because he’s already there. I guess he arrived last night. I only realized it when I called him.”

“So what made you suddenly decide to call him? Was it because of the files you saw at the city bureau and what Director Wang said?”

“Yes, but that’s not all. Last night, I dreamt of my real mother, so when I woke up, I called him.”

“Then what did you dream about?” Actually, Shen Jingxiu was not a person who liked to pry relentlessly.
