Chapter 324: Two More

When Adeline’s eyes adjusted to the dim light from her powers, her breath caught in her throat.

They were surrounded.

Monsters. Dozens of them. Their grotesque forms crouched low in the darkness, silent and watchful, as if waiting for an invisible signal. Their claws dug into the soil, their fangs glistened with saliva that dripped steadily onto the earth.

A strangled gasp escaped her lips before she could stop it. "Oh—"

Aaron was on her in an instant, his hand clamping lightly over her mouth, his voice low and sharp. "Adeline!"

She blinked rapidly, her heart hammering. When he pulled his hand back, she whispered in a shaky voice, "I’m sorry, I just—I didn’t expect this many."

She had been lulled into a false sense of security. Their journey had felt calm. No monsters had attacked, and that made her almost forget that they were in a dense forest riddled with ruthless, bloodthirsty monsters.

The chilling reality was far worse: they had been watched the entire time. Surrounded, stalked, but never struck. The monsters had been waiting—waiting for protective barrier to come down so that they could strike their prey.

Aaron’s expression was grim but focused, as if he had anticipated this possibility. He glanced at the edges of the treeline, then quickly moved toward the door to the underground lair. His fingers worked quickly and carefully, prying open the heavy door. The creak was faint, but to Adeline’s ears, it thundered, echoing into the night.

The monsters did not move. Not yet. Their restraint was far worse than an attack.

"There are no guards," Aaron muttered, more to himself than to them. His eyes flicked toward the gaping stairway leading into the earth. "Of course, there aren’t. No one would ever expect intruders to get this far."

Adeline’s stomach twisted. The entrance itself was unguarded, but that didn’t mean safety lay ahead. She knew it—she felt it. Just because getting inside was easy didn’t mean the same applied to getting out.

The dark stairway yawned before them like the mouth of a beast. Cold air spilt from within, smelling of stone, blood, and something uncomfortably like rot.

Her chest tightened as she realised: this was a cage. One narrow path in, one narrow path out. If things went wrong, there would be no second chance. Only one way to escape, only one exist.

And yet, despite the crawling dread at the base of her spine, Adeline found herself straightening her back. She had come this far. She couldn’t falter now. She put on a brave face for Layla, she had to see it through.

Aaron looked at her and Layla, his voice steady. "Once we go in, we don’t turn back. Understand?"

Adeline swallowed hard, her eyes briefly darting to the patient, waiting for monsters at their backs. She gave a single nod.

Better the cage in front of them than the teeth behind.

Aaron, followed by Adeline and Layla, descended the creaking stone stairs. The air grew heavier with every step, pressing against Adeline’s chest. She let out a quiet exhale as she released the holy protection she had been maintaining.

It had kept the monsters above at bay, but the glow of divinity clung like a beacon—one that would certainly draw the attention of forbidden magic users. Down here, silence and shadows were their only allies.

The stairway was dimly lit by faint sconces along the wall, the flames weak and uneven. The shadows seemed to stretch unnaturally, curling and twisting like living things. It was eerie, unsettling, yet it gave them cover.

At the base of the stairs, Aaron spotted two guards. He didn’t hesitate. With a signal to his companions, he moved—swift, precise. His steps made no sound as he sprinted down the last few stairs. A sharp strike to the first guard’s throat, a brutal jab to the second’s neck. Both crumpled before an alarm could be raised.

Aaron straightened, taking a deep breath. Adeline descended after him, her voice hushed but steady. "Should we wear these? For disguise?" She pointed at the masks the two guards were wearing. On many instances, she wanted to tear those masks off. They loved to stay anonymous and ruin people’s lives. She wanted to get rid of the anonymity they hid behind.

Adeline bent down and tugged at the mask of the unconscious guard. But when she pulled it free, she froze. 𝕗𝐫𝚎𝗲𝘄𝐞𝕓𝐧𝕠𝘃𝕖𝐥.𝐜𝚘𝚖

Her breath hitched in her throat. The mask fell from her hands, landing with a dull thud on the stone floor. Beneath it... There was nothing.

No eyes. No nose. No mouth. Just smooth, featureless skin where a face should have been.

Her fingers went cold. She staggered back a step, her hand instinctively flying to her own mouth to keep from screaming.

Aaron stiffened at the sight, his knuckles white around his weapon. Layla let out a strangled gasp.

The three of them stood frozen, staring at the abomination lying crumpled before them.

Adeline’s heart hammered in her chest. She had seen monsters above—clawed, grotesque, twisted creatures birthed from dark magic. But this... This was something different. This thing had worn a human body like a shell. It had walked, breathed, lived... Without a face.

Her holy power stirred restlessly inside her, sensing corruption, yet she dared not release it. Not here. Not with enemy eyes potentially lurking in the dark.

Her throat tightened."What... what are they?" she whispered, though the words were barely audible.

The shadows at the far end of the hall flickered, stretching like something had shifted within them. The two standing figures further ahead—guards, or whatever they were—turned their heads. Even from this distance, Adeline could see it. Their masks sat too tightly against their skin, too perfectly.

And for the first time, she wondered: which was scarier?

The monsters clawing above ground... Or the ones that looked human, yet hid something even worse beneath?

Adeline quickly ripped off the mask of the second guard. "Aaron, hide them!"

"It’s more suspicious if they are not in their designated place!" Aaron argued.

Adeline nodded. She placed one of the masks back and propped him up while Layla and Aaron were on the lookout.

One of them standing gaurd at the designated place would be enough to not rouse suspicion. They needed two more masks...
