Chapter 194: Leverage

Larry reviewed the lawsuit meticulously in his office, with documents everywhere.

"This is a classic nuisance suit and was designed specifically to drain your financial resources." He said.

"Can Maxwell actually win this?" I asked cautiously, weighing our options.

"I’m very doubtful he would, but defending it would properly cost millions and take years. He knows you’re financially vulnerable right now."

"So he’s trying to extort us legally?"

"Yes, but there’s something else also interesting. He’s reaching out through back channels, meaning he wants to negotiate directly."

"Negotiate what exactly?" I asked, being sceptical.

"Not money or business but partnership. He knows there will be a resurrection of Marvin Ventures, and he would want to be considered as a major investor."

We met with Maxwell Pierson three days later in a neutral location with lawyers present on both sides.

"I’ll drop the lawsuit completely if you resurrect Marvin Ventures with my capital backing."

"Why would you possibly want that?" I asked carefully.

"Because you were right all along. Ethical investing is the future, and I was wrong about Ashford’s corruption, which exposed that reality. I want to be on the right side of history going forward."

I was deeply skeptical of his demands. "You literally tried to destroy us."

"I tried to profit from your destruction, and I failed. Now I want to profit from your success instead, and you and I both know that business isn’t personal."

Katherine considered this carefully: "What are your proposed terms?"

"30% equity stake with a $100 million capital injection. You control all operations, and I provide resources and connections. Legitimate partnership."

Katherine and I discussed privately in the conference room, our lawyers behind us.

"Do we trust him?" She asked.

"Definitely not. But unfortunately, we need him. We’re practically broke; the legal fees destroyed our savings. We need substantial capital." I explained to her.

"And if he betrays us again?" She asked worriedly.

"We have lawyers and iron-clad contracts backed with legal protections. We’re smarter now and more experienced."

We decided together to accept the partnership, resurrect Marvin Ventures, and rebuild.

Thomas was ready for discharge officially. Finally, he came home at two months old from NICU, weighing 5 pounds 6 ounces, and was healthy.

Dr. Mèng was emotional as she signed the discharge papers. "He’s a genuine miracle. A 26-week preemie and a Sepsis survivor, he thrived beautifully."

We took him home in a proper car seat with Rose and Hector screeching from excitement.

"Tommy’s coming home!"

Rose kept jumping enthusiastically. "I’ll share all my toys with him!"

Hector was being protective as usual. "I’ll protect him forever."

We went home, no longer hiding or running, just happy living normally.

It was exhausting with three children; beautiful but chaotic, and just as normal.

Rose was nearly 4 years old, and Hector was 8. Thomas is just 2 months in his adjusted age.

Katherine and I had sleepless nights with his constant feedings, endless diaper changes, and his night crying, but we were genuinely happy to do this.

"We’re actually doing it, having a normal family life," I told her one night.

"Is this what normal actually feels like?"

"I think so. I really hope so."

A double wedding was planned between Bella & James and Susan & Jesse.

It was six months after Thomas’s birth, which was perfect timing.

In upstate New York at Susan’s beautiful property. A small, intimate outdoor ceremony was held for family and close friends only.

Rose was the flower girl, and Hector was the ring bearer. Thomas was too young to be present but slept peacefully through the ceremony.

Katherine was helping Bella with her dress in the guest room. "You look absolutely beautiful."

"I never thought I’d fall in love again... after David Hampton died. But James-"

"He’s your second chance girl."

Susan added. "Second chances are precious. We don’t waste them."

The wedding was held on a beautiful autumn day, with the leaves changing color and the weather perfect.

Vows were exchanged among the couples, and everyone could feel how emotional and genuine they were.

Bella and James: "I promise to love you through absolutely everything, to choose you every single day, and to build a life together filled with joy and purpose."

Susan and Jesse: "I thought I would never find love, but you proved me completely wrong. I promise to cherish every moment we have together and to make every single day count."

Not a dry eye anywhere as everyone cried from happy tears. Indeed, we all felt hope, a sense of the future, and love.

Later at the reception, there was music, dancing, food, and an all-around celebration.

I looked around and realized it was the first real joy in years, earned and deserved, and it brought all the happiness.

Katherine danced with me while Thomas slept contentedly in Susan’s arms. Rose and Hector ran wild with other children.

"We made it to this. Weddings and celebrations." She said excitedly

"We earned every single second of it."

"When we get home tonight, after the kids are asleep. I want to celebrate properly."

"We’re fully cleared by the doctor?" I inquired, raising an eyebrow.

"Fully cleared. It’s six months post-C-section. I’m completely recovered and ready."

"I’ll hold you to that promise, Mrs. Marvin."

Katherine and I announced during the reception, with Maxwell Pierson present, as we had invited him to the wedding.

"We’re officially relaunching Marvin Ventures, going into ethical investing. We’re getting stronger than before." Katherine began.

"With substantial new capital, new strategic partnerships, and a new direction, we aim to build something genuinely worth believing in." I completed.

There was applause and support from our family, who believed in our vision and embraced our second chances.

Late at night after the reception. We were finally home, and the kids were asleep.

The first time we made love since Thomas’s traumatic birth. It had been six long months of waiting, and our anticipation had been building.

Our moment was gentle at first because Katherine’s body had changed after pregnancy. She was softer and more beautiful.

"You’re more beautiful now than ever before," I whispered as I trailed kisses down her body.

"I’m different now. It’s two pregnancies with stretch marks everywhere-"

"You’re living proof of life and survival. Nothing is more beautiful than bringing another human out of you."

We made love thoroughly, reconnecting deeply and rediscovering each other. We had multiple passionate rounds claiming and celebrating together as we have survived everything thrown at us.

"I love you more than words can express." She gasped.

"I love you too," I replied as I kissed her.

Six months later, our lives had been transformed.

Marvin Ventures was thriving, with over $300 million in its portfolio from business growth and expansion. This has been achieved through our dedication and perseverance, amid sleepless nights, strategic meetings, and planning. We had to reconstruct the Marvin Group as a whole, rebuilding from scratch. It was a huge risk we encountered, but one I was very much willing to take.

Rose was now 4 and had started kindergarten. She was very bright and happy with no trauma memories whatsoever.

Hector had adjusted to a normal life and was secure in the Marvin family, choosing love over blood.

Thomas, who was now 8 months adjusted, had reached developmental milestones and was healthy and strong.

Katherine and I’s marriage was stronger than ever, as it showed how we had survived almost everything. Truly, our bond was unbreakable.

Bella and James were still in their honeymoon era and had travelled to Europe, building a beautiful life together.

Susan and Jesse’s marriage was just as blissful and precious.

Elliot’s successful career as a psychologist was remarkable. His contributions to his field have been outstanding, leading to opportunities to work with various health and civil organizations. Also, Katherine and I knew Jeff was preparing to propose soon, but we kept it a secret until the time was right.

Ashford received a 15-year prison sentence, with all appeals denied. Justice was finally served.

We took a family photo in our living room.

Katherine, Rose, Hector, Thomas, and I.

It showed us a happy family together who had survived impossible odds.

We hung the photo prominently in our living room.

"We did it," Katherine said quietly. "We actually did it."

"We survived and won."

Thomas babbled happily, Rose giggled, and Hector smiled genuinely. Our family was whole and complete.

Our future has always been uncertain, but the present? The present now was perfect, and nothing could take away that feeling from us right now.

"To new beginnings," I toasted at our family dinner with everyone present.

"To survive," Katherine added.

"To second chances," Bella and James said together.

"To love," Susan and Jesse said.

"And to family," Elliot said firmly. "Always family."

We clinked glasses while the children laughed and played.

What we had for now was enough.

But life will continue, and new challenges will come.

But as our new adventures await, the Marvin family strives forward.
