Chapter 117: Empire Rising

Two weeks.

Two weeks since Victoria was arrested, since I won the board vote, and since Katherine said yes.

Two weeks of building the life we’ve been fighting for.

I’m standing in the Marvin Industries boardroom. Floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Manhattan. My city. My empire.

But this time, it’s clean.

"Mr. Marvin, the quarterly reports are exceptional," Robert Gale says, sliding documents across the table. "Stock prices up eighteen percent. Investor confidence is at an all-time high."

I scan the numbers. Katherine taught me to see beyond the surface, to understand what the data really means.

"The hotel acquisition?" I ask.

"Back on the table. The investors who pulled out during the Victoria situation want back in, with better terms for us."

I lean back and allow myself a small smile. "Then let’s make it happen, but I want full transparency. No shortcuts and no questionable partnerships. Everything legitimate."

Janet Park nods approvingly. "That’s the leadership we voted for."

The meeting continues with strategic planning, expansion discussions, and legitimate businesses being conducted.

This is what I was always meant to be - powerful, strategic, and in control.

But now I’m doing it right.

When the meeting ended, I checked my phone, and there was a text from Katherine:

Just closed the Morrison case. Former enforcer now running a youth boxing gym. Our model works. ❤️

I smiled at my phone like some lovesick teenager because that’s what she does to me.

Katherine’s at the consulting firm when I arrive. Our firm - Blaire-Marvin Risk Assessment.

She’s in her element. Talking to a former Commission member about job placement. Her passion for this work - helping people escape criminal life. I remember this was what made me fall for her in the first place because she’s determined on anything she sets her mind to do.

"Mr. Torres, you have construction experience, that’s valuable. Legitimate contractors are always hiring skilled workers-"

She sees me and holds up one finger, signalling five more minutes.

I wait and watch her work. She’s brilliant at this - reading people, understanding their fears, and finding paths forward.

When Torres leaves with three job interviews scheduled, Katherine turns to me.

"Hey. How was the board meeting?"

"Productive. The hotel deal’s back on."

"That’s amazing!" She crosses to me and kisses me. "I’m proud of you."

"Couldn’t have done it without you. Your financial analysis convinced half the board."

"We’re a good team."

"The best."

She’s wearing the engagement ring. I still can’t believe she said yes, even after everything - after I almost destroyed us, she chose me anyway.

"What?" she asks, noticing my stare.

"Just thinking about how lucky I am."

"We both are." She glances at her watch. "I have another client in ten minutes. Dinner tonight?"

"Absolutely. I’ll cook."

"You’ll order from the Italian place and pretend you cooked."

"You know me so well."

She laughs. That sound - it still does things to me.

"I love you," I say.

"I love you too. Now go run your empire, I have people to save."

Back at Marvin Industries, Bella’s waiting in my office.

My sister. Still getting used to that.

"Tony. Got a minute?"

"For you? Always."

She sits and pulls up reports on her tablet. "Logistics for the hotel expansion. I’ve optimized the supply chain and cut costs by twelve percent without sacrificing quality."

I review her work. It’s perfect. Brilliant, actually.

"How did I run this company without you?"

"Poorly." She smirks. "Also, I need approval for the new hires. The operations team is all vetted."

"Approved. Bella... thank you for everything. For being here and for believing in this."

"We’re family. That’s what we do." She pauses. "Also, I’m dating someone."

I look up. "Yeah?"

"He’s a Software engineer, we met at a tech conference. His name is David. He’s... nice."

"Nice?"

"Very nice. Patient with my directness and doesn’t mind me explaining things in excessive detail. He actually finds it ’charming.’" She makes air quotes.

"I want to meet him."

"Eventually. When it’s serious."

"It sounds serious already."

"Maybe." She’s almost smiling. "We’ll see."

After she leaves, I sit at my desk and look around my office.

This is real. The legitimate empire, the family, the future.

For the first time in two years, I’m not just surviving.

I’m thriving.

Thomas calls that afternoon.

"Son. How’s business?"

"Good, Dad. Really good."

"I’m proud of you. What you’ve built - it’s what I should have done. Could have done, if I’d made better choices."

"You’re making better choices now."

"Trying to." He pauses. "Bella mentioned you’re hosting a charity gala next week, must be a big event."

"Marvin Industries’ coming out party. Legitimacy on full display."

"Need any help?"

"Actually, yeah. Your connections in real estate, some of those people would be good contacts."

"I’ll make calls. Tony... I’m glad you’re happy. You and Katherine, you’ve earned it."

"Thanks, Dad."

After we hang up, I allow myself a moment of gratitude.

My family, my business, and my future with Katherine.

All of it clean. Legal. Mine.

That evening, I’m in my office when Katherine arrives. She’s brought Chinese food, our compromise when neither of us wants to cook.

"Busy day?" she asks, unpacking containers.

"Productive. You?"

"Same. Placed three clients in jobs. Real and legal jobs." She hands me chopsticks. "This is what we always wanted, Tony. This life, this work... doing it together."

"No regrets about San Francisco?"

She looks at me. "Not even for a second. This is where I belong... with you building this."

We eat and talk about our days, just like normal couple stuff. It’s surreal after two years of running, fighting, and barely surviving.

"What?" Katherine asks. "You’re staring again."

"Just remembering the first time you came to my club at Apex two years ago. You were terrified of me."

"I was terrified of what you represented. The Marvin name, the criminal empire... the danger."

"And now?"

"Now I see you... just you. The man I love. The man who walked away from that life to build something better."

She stands, crosses to me, and sits on the edge of my desk.

"The man who proposed in the middle of a hostile corporate takeover."

I stand to step between her legs. "I had to make a point."

"You made several." Her hands slide up my chest. "Mr. Gale was very impressed."

"Were you impressed?"

"Very." She pulls me closer. "Though your timing could use work."

"I’ll keep that in mind for next time."

"Next time?" She laughs. "Planning another dramatic proposal?"

"No. Next time, I’m doing it right. Private, romantic, and perfect."

"Tony, that was perfect. Chaotic, public, and completely you."

I kiss her deeply and thoroughly, tasting her.

She responds with her hands in my hair and body pressing against mine.

"We’re in your office," she murmurs against my lips.

"I know."

"People could walk in."

"Door’s locked."

"Tony-"

"I love you, and I’ve been thinking about this all day. You being here and about how it all started."

"We hated each other when it started."

"Hate, love... thin line. And mind you, I never hated you...intrigued, yes, but not hate. You were too sexy for a man to hate you."

She laughs, then stops laughing as I slide her jacket off, kiss her throat, her collarbone...

"This is our empire," I whisper. "Built together. Again."

"Show me."
