The Mafia's Undoing-Chapter 108: Choices
That afternoon, there was a knock at Susan’s door.
I expected Tony, so I braced myself for the confrontation and opened the door to see... Bella.
"Can we talk?"
I was so surprised, I just stepped aside. She comes in, looks around Susan’s apartment.
"Nice place. Very... not underground tunnel." She spots the roses. "Tony?"
"Tony."
"Subtle." She sits on the couch without being invited and makes herself at home. "We need to talk."
"If you’re here to defend your brother-"
"I’m not." Bella meets my eyes. "He fucked up badly. Massively. As in comprehensively fucked up."
"Then why are you here?"
"Because I’ve watched you two for six months, and Katherine... you’re miserable without each other."
"I’m protecting myself."
"By running away to San Francisco?"
I froze. "How did you-"
"Elliot told me. We’ve been talking, bonding over our shared frustration with the two most stubborn people we know." She leans back. "San Francisco. That’s what, three thousand miles?"
"Three thousand and seven, actually."
"Hmmmm, very precise and very... Katherine." Bella studies me. "Is that what you really want, or is it just the safest option?"
"What’s wrong with safe?"
"Nothing. If that’s actually what you want." She pauses. "Let me tell you about smart choices. I spent thirty-six years making safe decisions, logical paths, and never taking risks because risks mean potential pain."
"Sounds reasonable."
"It was boring as hell." Bella smiles slightly. "Then I found out I had a father and brother I never knew. And I had to choose - stay in my safe, logical life, or dive into this insane criminal conspiracy war you two live in. Logic said stay away. Self-preservation said, " Stay away. Common sense said stay away."
"But you came anyway."
"I chose family. And yeah, it’s been terrifying. I’ve been shot at, threatened, and nearly blown up. But I don’t regret it. Because the alternative was wondering ’what if’ for the rest of my life."
I sat beside her. "San Francisco is the smart choice."
"Maybe, but is it the right choice?"
"I don’t know anymore."
"Here’s what I do know." Bella turns to face me fully. "Tony’s a mess without you, and I don’t mean sad. I mean, fundamentally broken. He literally turned off his phone for two days, walked away from millions, and cancelled every meeting for a month."
"He’s done grand gestures before-"
"This isn’t a gesture, this is actual change. He told his investors he’s taking a month off. Actually taking time, first time since I’ve known him."
I want to believe her. Wanted so desperately to believe this time is different.
"What if it doesn’t last? What if he goes back to working eighty hours a week? What if I’m second priority again?"
"Then you leave. You go to San Francisco knowing you gave it everything. But Katherine, what if it does last, what if you both figure it out, and what if the life you’ve been fighting for is actually possible?"
The hope in her voice is dangerous.
"I’m scared," I whisper.
"I know."
"I survived external enemies, being kidnapped, tortured, hunted, but this terrifies me."
"Because it’s real." Bella takes my hand. "External enemies are easy. You fight or run, but either requires vulnerability. That’s hard."
"What if I give him another chance and he breaks my heart again?"
"What if you don’t and you regret it forever?"
We sit in silence. Her question hangs between us.
"I don’t have an answer," I finally say.
"You don’t need an answer. You just need to be honest with yourself and with Tony. Stop protecting and start communicating."
"I don’t know if I can."
"Yes, you can. You’re one of the bravest people I know." Bella stands. "Think about it and not about what’s safe or smart. About what you actually want."
She leaves.
I’m alone with the roses, the job offer, and the impossible choice.
Hours later, I’m still sitting there when my phone rings from an unknown number.
I almost don’t answer, but something makes me.
"Hello?"
A distorted voice, electronic and cold.
"Katherine Blaire. You don’t know me, but I know everything about you, about Tony, and about your little happy ending."
My blood runs cold. "Who is this?"
"Someone who can’t let you live happily ever after. You and Tony destroyed too many lives. Morrison, Charles, Margaret. You think there aren’t consequences?"
"Is this a threat?"
"This is a promise. You have two choices - take that San Francisco job and disappear, or stay in New York and watch everyone you love die. You have forty-eight hours to decide."
"Wait-"
The line goes dead.
I’m shaking with my phone still pressed to my ear, staring at nothing.
This wasn’t about Tony or our relationship.
There’s still an enemy out there, someone hunting us.
And now they’re forcing my choice.
Run to San Francisco and save everyone by disappearing.
Or stay and fight, risking everyone I love.
With or without Tony.
I dial before I can think.
It rings once. Twice.
"Katherine?" Tony’s voice sounded desperate and hopeful. "Katherine, is that you?"
"We need to talk. Now." My voice is shaking. "Someone just threatened to kill everyone I love if I don’t leave New York. We’re not done, it’s not over, and I need you."
I hear silence, then he said. "I’m coming. Where are you?"
"Susan’s apartment. Tony-"
"I’m already out the door."
He hangs up.
I sit there, my phone in hand and surrounded by white roses.
Forty-eight hours to decide.
San Francisco or New York.
Safety or risk.
Running or fighting.
Alone or with Tony.
But as I wait for him to arrive, I realize something: the choice was already made.
The moment I heard that threat, the moment I called Tony, the moment I said "I need you" - I chose.
I’m staying, I’m fighting and I’m doing it with him.
Together, like we always do.
The door bursts open and it’s Tony - out of breath, his hair a mess, and eyes wild with concern.
"Katherine, are you okay? What happened? Who threatened you?"
I stood and looked at him. He’s here; he dropped everything and came running.
Just like I knew he would.
"I’m staying," I say.
"What?"
"San Francisco. I’m not going, I’m staying here in New York with you."
"Katherine-"
"But we really need to talk about everything, us and how we intend to move forward. After we deal with whoever just threatened to kill everyone I love."
Tony crosses to me and takes my hands. "Tell me everything. From the beginning."
And I do.
Because we’re partners.
And whatever’s coming, we face it together.
