Chapter 443: The Show

After a lively breakfast filled with Oliver’s endless stories about his "very serious responsibilities" as the master of two gorgeous, yet stubborn animals, Cloud and Browny, Evelyn walked Axel to the main door.

Their only son was nowhere to be seen.

"He didn’t even say goodbye," Axel muttered.

Evelyn smiled. "He’s in the barn. He’s too busy feeding his horse and pony. Apparently, they can’t survive without him."

Axel sighed in amused disappointment. "I see. I’ve been replaced."

"You have," she said sweetly. "By a horse and a pony."

He narrowed his eyes at her, but the corner of his lips lifted.

The morning air was cool as they stepped outside together. Axel gently held her hand while they walked toward his car. His grip was warm and steady, like always.

"I wish I didn’t have to go to the office today," Axel said softly.

Evelyn glanced at him. "Didn’t you say you have so many meetings that require you to attend, because otherwise they would be wasteful meetings?"

"Hm. Yeah. Still, it’s boring meetings," he replied lazily as they stopped beside the car. He looked like a man being forced to attend a punishment session rather than run a company. Then he turned to her. "What about you? What are your plans for today?" 𝕗𝐫𝐞𝕖𝕨𝐞𝗯𝚗𝕠𝘃𝐞𝚕.𝐜𝗼𝚖

She tilted her head slightly, meeting his gaze. "Well, just like you... I am also doing some boring work in my home office."

Evelyn tried to sound playful. But Axel’s expression slowly turned stiff.

It was subtle, but she caught it immediately. His eyes sharpened just a little.

"Eve," he said quietly, "did Walters Group already put you in inconvenience?"

She waved her hand casually. "Well, they sent me tons of documents I need to read."

"Tons?" His brows drew together.

"Maybe not tons. Just... a mountain. Figuratively speaking."

He did not look amused.

Evelyn could see the worry forming behind his calm face. She knew exactly what he was thinking. Joseph’s betrayal had shaken more than just her trust. It had made Axel wary of anything connected to that company.

Still, he did not push further.

Instead, he lifted her hand and held it more firmly.

"My wife," he said gently, "please don’t tire yourself. You will only start to officially take the offer from the company in February, right?"

"Hm... I will," she assured him.

She gave him a reassuring smile, trying to ease the tension in his eyes. The last thing she wanted was for him to spend the entire day distracted by her workload.

Before he could ask more questions, she quickly shifted the topic.

"Axel," she began, "how will you handle Harper Cooper? I saw that the gossip news is still trending on the internet."

Even though she tried to sound casual, there was curiosity in her voice.

Actually, she had wanted to ignore it. But her family had not. They had called her repeatedly, expressing anger on her behalf. Some of them sounded ready to personally fight Harper.

Axel’s expression changed instantly. This time, his lips curved into something more dangerous than gentle.

"My wife," he said smoothly, "no need to worry. You just need to enjoy the show this noon."

Her eyes widened. "Show? What show?"

"You’ll see. Make sure you’re watching the news."

That was all he said.

Evelyn stared at him. "What kind of show?"

He only smiled.

"Axel."

"Hm?"

"Don’t be mysterious."

He opened the car door but paused before getting in. Leaning slightly closer, he brushed his thumb against her cheek.

"Trust me," he murmured. "It will be interesting."

Her heart skipped at the tone in his voice. Calm. Confident. Slightly dangerous.

"Is this legal?" she asked cautiously.

He laughed softly. "Of course."

That answer did not fully convince her.

She tried again. "At least give me a hint."

"No," he replied simply.

"Axel Knight!"

He smiled and leaned in to kiss her lips softly before stepping into the car and closing the door.

Even with the window still down, he refused to reveal anything more.

"Go inside," he told her, his voice warm again. "It’s cold."

Evelyn folded her arms. "You’re enjoying this."

"A little."

She shook her head with a faint smile. She knows Axel won’t reveal anything.

Axel gave her one last look, eyes soft despite the storm clearly brewing behind them. Then he waved.

Evelyn waved back, standing there as his car slowly drove away. She did not move until it completely vanished from her sight.

Only then did she let out a breath.

’A show at noon? What show is he referring to?’

Her curiosity burned.

Whatever Axel was planning, she knew one thing for certain... Someone was about to regret challenging him.

...

Buried in her works, time flew faster than Evelyn expected, and before she realized it, noon had already arrived.

She was sitting in her home office, completely focused on the Walters Group financial report displayed on her laptop. The revenue figures from last year were spread neatly across the screen. Columns of numbers. Charts. Notes she had written earlier.

She narrowed her eyes slightly, calculating and comparing.

"Hmm..." she murmured to herself, tapping her pen lightly against the desk.

Just as she was about to recheck one section, her concentration was interrupted by the soft vibration of her cell phone.

Bzzz.

The quiet sound felt unusually loud in the peaceful room.

Her eyes left the financial report and shifted to the phone resting beside her laptop.

She frowned slightly.

"Oscar?" she muttered when she saw the sender’s name. "Why did he send a text instead of a call?"

Usually, Oscar preferred calling. Especially when it involved something urgent.

Curious, she picked up her phone and leaned back against her chair.

The message was short.

"Madam, check the internet. Your hubby finally makes a move."

Evelyn blinked.

Then she gasped softly.

"Oh... the show."

She had been so immersed in revenue numbers and profit margins that she completely forgot about Axel’s mysterious promise that morning.

Hurriedly, she placed her phone down and moved her fingers quickly across the keyboard. Within seconds, multiple news websites filled her screen.

It did not take long for her to find what she was looking for.
