Chapter 440: Honest

It took Evelyn several long breaths to process Axel’s shocking sentence.

For a moment, the world around her seemed to fade. The soft morning light, the warmth of the bed, even the steady sound of his breathing—everything blurred as her mind struggled to catch up with what he had just said.

’He was supposed to sleep with Harper Cooper...!?’

The words echoed painfully in her head.

Without realizing it, questions began to flood her thoughts so quickly that it felt as if her chest were tightening with each one.

’Why did he say he was supposed to sleep with Harper?’

’What did that mean?’

’Were they dating?’

’Oh no! Had I interrupted something that was already planned?’

’Heaven! Had I seriously ruined his night?’

Her heart thudded heavily against her ribs.

And then another thought surfaced.

’What does that have to do with Harper Cooper’s son?’

’Noway! So, they sleep after that? Wait... no. He admits he never sleeps with other women after he sleeps with me, right?’

’Ugh, stop it, Eve! Stop thinking about it...!’ She scolded herself mentally. And her eyes never left his face. She searched him carefully, trying to read what he was not yet saying.

Axel seemed to understand exactly what was running through her mind.

A faint, almost helpless smile curved his lips. Slowly, he lifted his hand and gently placed it against her cheek, his thumb brushing softly against her skin.

"You know..." he began quietly, "I was not a good man before we met. Right?"

Evelyn nodded slightly.

She did not trust her voice at that moment. It felt stuck somewhere between her throat and her pride. Besides, everyone knew about his past. The media had talked about it endlessly. Headlines, rumors, photos—his name had once been easy to spot almost everywhere.

Still, hearing him say it like this felt different. More real. More personal.

Her mind was still tangled with confusion, and a faint headache began to form at her temples.

Axel noticed the hesitation in her eyes.

"Are you sure you want to hear this?" he asked carefully. There was something almost fragile in his tone, something she rarely heard from him.

"Yes," she answered softly. "Please."

He took a slow breath before continuing.

"Eve, in the past, I slept with a few women," he said plainly. "But it was always just physical. There was never any emotion involved. And I never slept with the same person more than once."

He spoke carefully, watching her reaction as if preparing for anger, jealousy, or disappointment.

Evelyn’s fingers curled into the blanket without her realizing it. She already knew about his reputation. She had accepted it when she chose to be with him.

But hearing it directly from his mouth still made her heart tighten painfully.

It was one thing to read gossip online.

It was another to hear your husband calmly admit it while looking into your eyes.

She forced herself to remain steady.

Axel studied her face closely. Seeing that she did not pull away, he continued.

"And that night," he said slowly, "I was supposed to spend the night with her."

Evelyn’s jaw tensed.

"But you entered my room instead."

A faint smile touched his lips as he said it, as if the memory carried meaning far beyond what he had first admitted.

Evelyn’s brows furrowed slightly. His expression did not match the heaviness of his confession. He did not look guilty. He did not look nostalgic. He looked... certain.

Confused by the direction of his explanation, she asked quietly, "So what are you trying to tell me?"

Axel’s hand remained on her cheek.

"I’m telling you that nothing happened between Harper and me that night."

Her breath caught.

"You came into my room," he continued, his voice low but steady. "And from that moment, everything changed."

The tension in her chest shifted, though it did not disappear completely.

"If I had slept with her," he added calmly, "you would not be here in my arms right now, and I might still be a sorrowful guy with no hope for a family of his own."

Evelyn swallowed.

"And the child?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Axel’s expression hardened slightly. "That child is not mine."

His answer was firm. Certain.

"There was never anything serious between Harper and me. That night was arranged through Dylan, who usually did that for me. Nothing more."

Evelyn blinked.

"Arranged? Dylan?" Evelyn swallowed. Now she knows how Axel got the girl... through Dylan. She didn’t know whether to worry because Dylan is now dating her sister.

"Yes." He sighed. "I’m sorry to reveal my dark past. But, because we are married now, and in love with each other. You need to know the truth about my past. Right?"

"Hmm... Thank you for being honest with me."

His gaze softened as it settled fully on her. "After I met you, my life changed forever..."

Silence filled the room.

The sunlight had grown brighter, but the air between them still felt heavy with truth and vulnerability.

Evelyn searched his eyes once more, looking for hesitation. There was none. Only honesty.

Slowly, the tightness in her chest eased. She only wanted to know that Axel didn’t have a son with that woman. That was enough for her.

"Mr. Knight..." She says playfully. "You’re really bad at explaining things."

A faint laugh escaped him. "I know."

"You nearly gave me a heart attack with the way you explained this matter."

"I would never do that intentionally."

Evelyn exhaled slowly. "Next time," she said, her tone calmer now, "start with the important part."

He smiled gently.

"That I love you?"

She can’t help but smile at his words. "Yes," she replied. "That part."

"Alright, Mrs. Knight... I’ll remember that," Axel said, a relieved smile spreading across his face as he drew her closer and embraced her gently.

But a moment later, Evelyn pushed Axel away slightly, just enough to see his face.

"Wife, why are you looking so upset again?" He asked worriedly.
